A must play

This course is in very good shape and is so much fun to play. You get every kind of lie you can imagine. Uphill/sidehill/downhill lies, blind tee shots uphill and downhill tee shots, wide open fairways and doglegs. #9 and 18 are challenging as you are hitting your tee shot into a blind 2nd shot with an uneven lie. Greens were a little slower than normal due to the lack of rain. They had 3-5" of rain the last 5-6 days. The course soaked most of it right up. There was some standing water on 2 holes but that did not affect play at all. I really enjoy playing here. It's becoming one of my favorites and I drive 90 minutes to play there. Very nice staff working the bar. If you are looking for a course fun and in great shape, give Mattaponi Springs a try. You'll be glad you did. Oh, mosquitos can be a problem on very hot days.

Beautiful, but slow greens

Tees, fairways, and rough were all great. Greens looked good (minus all the unrepaired ball marks - fix your pitch marks people!) but rolled very slowly. Maybe a 5 or 6 stimp. Had to hammer putts to get them to the hole. Rained last four holes but that barely slowed them down haha

Torn review

I'm torn about how to review my experience. First, we got a great deal through Golf Now. I'd always heard good things about the course and always wanted to try it out. So with the price and decent weather, we went for it. About an hour drive for us so really wanted it to be worth it. When you arrive, it's the weirdest thing. You go get your own cart and load your stuff. Then you go up to the bar, not the pro shop, and check in. One bonus that I didn't know is that the practice range is included in your greens fees, at least ours was. I give the range a C+. The range was soaked, like hitting off a wet sponge. The practice balls are garbage. I know its practice, but the balls are as if they drain ponds and wet areas, run over them with a lawn mower and take them to the range. Signage? Where's the first tee? Luckily the cart girl drove past and directed us where to go. That leads me to another issue, no Marshall or starter and this will be a point of contention throughout the day. Got to the first tee 10 minutes before out tee time just to have 2 guys drive around us and jump on the tee box. Since we were a pair I figured the right thing to do is to make (2) 2s into a 4, but they weren't interested. By the end of hole one, we had guys in the fairway behind us. I knew this wasn't going to be fun. By hole 4, the pair in front had taken off and now we were waiting just off the green for a 3some to tee off and hit 3 balls, 50 yards into the woods, every shot. By hole 7 a Marshall (cart bot) was riding around trying to "do what his boss wanted". Somebody in charge should've taken charge. Now, I'll just into the course logistics. There are many holes where you are bilnd to the hole layout. First time players have no clue what's beyond the horizon. No details, nothing. It'd be nice to have something on the card to show hole layout at least. In fact, we drove into the group in front of us on 16 and 18. Now for the positives. The tee boxes are in great shape, full and level. The fairways are immaculate, I dont remember seeing many divots and the ball seemed to be always "sitting up". The greens are in top notch condition with ball marks getting full respect. I also, really appreciated the plaques that gave distances to hazard areas. When looking for any assistance, these were critical. As previously mentioned, a cart girl was making rounds frequently and even had hot food (cheeseburgers) which is rare and it was all priced nicely. Added bonus, nice restroom pavilions situated throughout with water stations. Clubhouse seemed really nice but we were in and out and didn't spend any time in there. Members have a nice place.

Hopefully, this explains why my review and recommendation score is polarized. I can see where the course can be fun and challenging, for frequent players. And there's a lot really nice amenities. However, the lack of layout detail, the lack of organization (starter/marshall), and a practice area that has huge potential made this experience less than I was hoping for. The round was LONG and really frustrating.

I could see being a regular member would be amazing. But for the traveling player, we need more info. That being said, the golfer in me wants another shot at it. But at normal rate, no way. There's no way I'd pay $100+ to play here. I give it a 3/5 (C+). Sorry for the honesty.

Great Course

A buddy and I decided to play during a heat wave so the course was wide open. Course is in great shape for this time of year. Greens were receptive and fairways were green. Based on other courses I have played in the central VA area, I will definitely be back to Mattaponi

Gem of a Course

Fantastic layout, friendly staff, high quality conditions. Only complaint would be that the greens were a bit slow and overgrown, but overall great course, worth a drive.

Early summer round

The course is in fine shape. With rains this past month the fairways and greens are healthy. Courses in this area usually suffer later in the summer. But at this time Mattaponi Springs is in peak form. The clubhouse staff are friendly.

Worth the drive to play this course

This golf course is in great shape, has a wonderful layout, friendly and informative staff, and compared to public courses from Fredericksburg to Williamsburg , I think it ranks as the best for its cost.

Lots of elevation changes, doglegs left and right, yet a good, fair test.

The Springs are a legit battle

Great course! Awesome staff and beers on ice. The course whipped me, great condition overall fairways and tee boxes , greens were solid 8/1 and undulating. Range is great open space in the pines. Looking forward to having a better day out there in the future.

Top Pick for a Public Course within 75 miles

Looks like a private course. Tees, fairways, bunkers and greens were in very good condition. It does show some heat stress and winter kill but they are watering and applying treatment to keep well above average conditions. Greens were receptive (some ball marking) instead of bouncing thru. A beverage cart was roaming around as well as course workers. Grassy areas bordering hazards were left at reasonable length to stop mid speed balls from watery penalty but not too thick to hit out of. Food looks good. Hot grill to make some grub. This course has no private residences. It's untouchable within an hour drive.
