The Golf Club at Mattaponi Springs

Played on 4/17/25 and really enjoyed the course. Even though the greens had been punched a few weeks earlier, they were fast and rolled pretty true. Unfortunately the pace of play was very slow. Multiple times we had to wait 5-10 minutes for the groups in front to clear. Fairways were still pretty dormant but felt good. Definitely playing again. Hopefully pace of play improves.

Wonderful and very pleasant staff, course in great shape. Had to leave at the turn, couldn’t enjoy the game with the delays..

Greens looked to have been recently punched with the smaller holes and difficult to hold your line. Beer afterwards slightly higher than normally accustomed too.

The course was in fantastic shape, especially for the time of year. Fairways were green and cut well. Bunkers were mostly soft sand and the greens smooth and firm. Range balls are complimentary and the staff is very friendly and accommodating. It was a truly great day on this beautiful course, despite my horrible scoring.

My first time playing here, and for this time of year, the course was great. Fairways were solid, minimal bare spots. Rough is dormant and cut down right now, so some bare lies to be expected, but significantly less penal than peak season I’m sure. Greens had recently been punched but they’re definitely puttable as the aeration holes are mostly filled and rolled well. Couple of greens here and there with some bare spots, but nothing some good weather can’t mend.

Layout is absolutely awesome. Not super long yardage wise, but the use of elevation and smartly placed tee boxes makes several holes play longer. The tiered and undulating greens provided plenty of challenges for this first timer.

It’s definitely worth the drive for any RVA area golfers, eapefially for those looking for good public golf North of the James.

Great course. Plenty of challenges but not impossible. Greens were aerated recently but seemed to also be recovering from disease damage which is my only complaint.

All staff was very accommodating, greens recently punched but rolled well, fairways are nice. I’m an 19 handicap and it was a perfect mix of super challenging but super fun!! Will definitely be back!

Staff was very friendly. course was in really good shape for early spring and the design is challenging but forgiving for the average player.

This course has a fantastic layout. Forces you to hit good golf shots. Greens had just been aerated, but still rolled very nicely and had some pace. Grass hasn’t greened up yet, but was still pretty thick and was a great playing surface. The staff was super friendly, helpful, and kind. Will definitely be back and would recommend playing here!

Nice 80+ degree day in March. Had a great time with 3 buddies. Greens were very playable even though they were just aerated earlier in the week. The staff is super friendly and welcoming!

This is one of my favorite courses in the area, truly a hidden gem.

We did the stay and play and I cannot recommend it enough. The cabin was very nice, well kept and accommodating for our group of 10.

The course is in great shape and the layout is very unique. All of the staff I dealt with were first class. John took the time to show me around their newly remodeled clubhouse and answered questions I had about the course. I also had the chance to talk with the owner, Jim, who was a true gentleman.

Overall the course is a must play and a great challenge for any golfer. I look forward to playing it again.

Mattaponi Springs is a great course for a very reasonable price. The layout is very open and forgiving, but has a number of challenging holes. A beautiful setting in the countryside. And the pace of play is great as well.
