PURE GOLF!
PURE GOLF is what they say at Mattaponi, and it's PURE GOLD!!
This course is phenomenal! Even though the undulating zoysia fairways are dormant, they still play like it's a roller coaster in spring. They moved their beautiful new gas carts to the parking lot now, so all I have to do is park, load up, and head to the bar to check in. How easy is that!! And what a bar... they've completely remodeled the bar, and it looks quite nice. The staff there is over the top helpful and always accommodating. What a great experience from beginning to end!
One of my favorite golf course in Richmond metro area
This course is absolutely amazing and challenging for me. Never disappoint how a course should be maintained.
A few issues but good overall
Cart path only bad but understandable. Putting green closed, not sure why. Fairways a bit wet but playable with a decent base of dormant Bermuda grass. Bunkers in good condition. Greens were running ok but whomever cut the holes needs much better training. Almost every hole was popped up around the hole. Certainly make the effective size much smaller when R to L putts turn right at the hole or vice versa. It was pretty obvious the holes were not flattened. Shows a lack of caring. An abundance of blind holes as well as wetland areas that are reachable. There are plaques on the tee boxes with distance but vague where they are measured from. A course map on the card or cart would help and setting up flags right and left at the hazards that can be hit with a range finder would be an inexpensive fix as there was sometimes a big difference in the distance. It is a great course with lots of blind shots and elevation changes but without course knowledge or info, it makes it a slower round and a guess fest.
Perfect play and stay
A group of ladies do a yearly stay and play for a night or two and we absolutely love it there. Everyone is extremely friendly and the service is fabulous. Course conditions have always been very good and the layout is fun with rolling Hills and no homes on the course. We will definitely keep coming back.
A Hidden Jewel
Mattaponi Springs is a wonderful golf course. I first played this course 7 years ago and have been a regular player there ever since. The course is a great test of golf on a beautiful property. The staff is friendly and professional and the stay and play feature makes it a great venue for outings. I highly recommend playing Mattaponi Springs golf course.
Beautiful and Challenging
I play Mattaponi on average about 30 times per year. It is aesthetically pleasing and at the same time very challenging. The finishing holes on both the Front and Back are tough - on #9 don't go pass the sand trap on the right otherwise you'll have a difficult/extreme downhill second into the green protected by a penalty area that has swallowed up many a golf ball. 18 is equally challenging with almost no flat lies - if you are lucky enough to "place" your ball on the "porch" on the left side of the hole you have a relatively easy second shot but anything to the right almost certainly ends up in a downhill lie (although not as severe as #9). My favorite holes are #13, #16 and #17 which all bring water into play. Some of the holes are pretty straightforward but there is danger all around. #6 is about the only hole that is straight from tee box to green and that's followed by the Par 3 #7 - the hole I hate more than any hole on the course. - it's not super long but it is protected by bunkers and if you have a flight pattern of right to left off the tee that big bunker on the left will almost certainly swallow your ball.
The Staff is top-notch and super friendly - the check-in is a breeze. The food is very good and if you ever have event there the food is some of the best that I've ever had following a tournament. They are constantly making improvements. The amenities are nice, clubhouse is very pleasing, and the Bar Staff couldn't be more friendly. Highly recommended.
Great Course for a Tournament!
The Virginia Asphalt Association hosted its Annual Asphalt Open Golf Tournament at the Golf Club at Mattaponi Springs in October 2024, and everything worked out so wonderfully - even the beautiful weather. I'll give credit to John and his staff, haha. Mattaponi is a beautiful, well-kept course with no houses around to be fearful of hitting. Our attendees thoroughly enjoyed the course and overall tournament. We will be hosting our tournament there again this year because of the great feedback and service we received. The VAA gives it a thumbs up. Book your tournament, or even go play at Mattaponi! You won't regret it.
Great course even better staff

The course features rolling fairways, well-placed bunkers, and fast, true greens that demand precision. The staff is friendly and accommodating, ensuring a welcoming atmosphere. Great Layout, Friendly Staff
This course is a challenging test in an extremely pretty rural setting. It is affordable to play and the staff is as friendly and accommodating as you wo find anywhere
Favorite Course since 2005
I drive 70+ miles to play this course at least twice a month or more. Have played since 2005 and it continues to get better. Great course and even greater staff.
Hidden Gem in the Fredericksburg -Richmond Area
The golf club at Mattaponi Springs located in Caroline county, Virginia between Richmond and Fredericksburg. Offers a premier golf experience to golfers of all ability levels. The course offers a architectural style that is similar to courses found in areas of higher elevation. The fairways and greens are in excellent shape. It has an excellent practice facility which is included in the price of the round. It offers stay and play options with many beautiful cabins on or near the course. The staff is friendly and attentive. If you're looking for a destination style golf course in the Richmond- Fredericksburg area, Mattaponi Springs won't disappoint you. The layout of the course is challenging and beautiful. The clubhouse offers an attractive venue for after round meals and drinks. The course s is conveniently located off of interstate 95, US route 1, and US l301. You may have to use a GPS to find it, but your golfing experience will be worth it.
Hidden Gem
Mattaponi Springs Golf Course is centrally located between Richmond and Fredericksburg, Virginia. The landscape is beautiful...the course is very fair to the average golfer...and the amenities are second to none. You can tee it up for a single round or come and stay for a great golf vacation. Congrats to the team here for presenting a fantastic golf experience...I will be back soon!!
Not the best greens
This is one of my groups favorite courses. First time we had been able to get there this season, it's about an hour 15 minute trip for us to get there. Parking lot was almost empty when we arrived at 9:45 for a 10:30 tee time. Easy check-in, range balls are complimentary. Practice putting green was in poor shape and an indicator of course conditions. Zoysia fairways are perfect right now! But the greens are not. Most had some dead areas, some greens had over 40% of the surface stressed/damaged! Still a great layout, very picturesque course. Hope they get the greens under control soon.
Does anyone work here?
This was my second time here. The first time, we quit after 10 holes because we got attacked by horseflies on a summer afternoon. We were excited because we liked the course and wanted to see the back nine. The course is ok, the customer service is a C-, and the pace of play was an F. 5:40 and not a Marshall or staff member in sight. It’s like a low level muni on how its monitored (its not). If the course were amazing, you could deal with it, but its really just fine.
Nothing to complain about
Greens roll true, most have multiple levels. No easy holes on this course and every shot makes you think and typically no flat lies. No real straight away holes and each hole has its own challenges. Bunkers are deep, and plenty of hazards to keep you thinking. Mattaponi is a tough course to be honest, lost quite a few balls, and i wouldn't recommend it to beginner golfers or golfers who have issues hitting a decent yardage from the tee box. The price could be a little better, 38/42 would be a bit more reasonable, but 45 for walking is worth it in the end. The closing holes on both 9 and 18 are fun, downhill and offer a fun last hole to close out each 9.
Overall the course is great. Driving range is emasculate, but could do with some more yardage signs around and more flags/objects to hit towards. Chipping and putting green is large, offers a practice bunker, multiple levels to work on different putts and chips. No better practice facility in the area or that i have been to. Could do with a better rate for the practice facility--$15 for a stack of balls (80-90 balls), wish i could be a little cheaper for less balls. Your round pay does include a pyramid of balls, but not many of us show up early enough to hit them all lol. Clubhouse is large, and offers a full dining area and restaurant, but was closed at the moment due to COVID19.
Overall would highly recommend is definitely worth a round.
Nice course layout
Good solid course in the middle of nowhere. Conditions not quite there yet but early in the year so far. Some unique holes on this course with the elevation changes. But very scenic. Need to play this in the middle of summer to see how nice this place is. Great customer service. We really had a great time. I’ll be back. Very good bang for the buck too.
