Lakes at Firewheel Golf Park
About
The Lakes Course at Firewheel is a links-style course that is loaded with water, and was a Dick Phelps creation on his return to Garland in 1987. Hole 7 is the most difficult–a long 549-yard par 5 that requires an approach over a pond.
Getting there : From Dallas, take Hwy. 75 north and exit Arapaho. Turn right and when you come to N. Garland Ave., turn left. Drive to W. Blackburn Rd. and turn west. The course is just down the road.

Cart died after 2 holes played
Nice layout, friendly staff, the entire course was extremely dry dead brown grass all over shoes, clothes and everywhere. Cart died after 2 holes played second cart was fine. No coolers to put beverages in they was nice enough to put ice in plastic bags.
Excellent Staffing
Excellent staff, recommended to all family members. Course a little wet but in good condition. Enjoy the day
Leaves were all over fairways. Balls hard to find, especially in rhe rough.
Played Here Before, but Needs Improvement
The Firewheel Lakes Course is a fairly challenging layout. The front 9 starts with a quirky hole, but after that the other 8 are pretty good. The back 9 is where it loses me. The creeks and lakes are hidden from view and it's not always apparent where they can hurt you. For example, on #10 you have to carry a creek that transverses the fairway. Depending on the tee box it can be difficult. However, if you clear the creek and push the ball a little left the lake to the right is in play. Anything to the left is no bargain either. #12 needs to be cleaned up and the trees to the left need to be cleared out to make it more playable. Anything other than a perfect shot is penalized and there is no chance for recovery. The closing holes, #17 - #18 are the same. #17 is a Par 5 with water down both sides. I normally take a 3 wood for placement from the Blue Tees. Yesterday, playing from the White Tees I nailed a ball right down the middle and it rolled out into the water through the dogleg. Same thing happened at #18 with the traversing creek. Yes, it is winter and the grass is less lush, but a shot down the middle should not be penalized like that.
Another thing I noticed is that the facility (run by the City of Garland) are becoming dated and not very well cared for. The courses in themselves need to have the foliage trimmed up and the banks of the creeks and lakes need a lot of maintenance. The City of Garland needs to decide if the maintenance of 3 courses is worth it in my opinion. The clubhouse needs to be redone the grill looks is barely there and the cashier is working of an old desk in stead of a counter. I know that COVID has something to do with it, but it is just not appealing. At this point it the facility needs to look ahead.
Truthfully the City should get rid of the Old Course, sell the land to developers, and use the money to revitalized the Bridges and Lakes courses in order to have a better more up to date facility.
Lakes Course
Overall the course is in good shape. The layout is tough but fair. Only issue is pace of play. Seems that the course can get very crowded pretty quickly.
Good, tough course
This course is more challenging than most. It was in great condition. Lush fairways and smooth greens.
Our foursome play in 4 hours on a Saturday morning. Great pace of play.
