Type Public/Municipal

Length 7134 yards

Rating 75.5

The Lakes Course at Firewheel is a links-style course that is loaded with water, and was a Dick Phelps creation on his return to Garland in 1987. Hole 7 is the most difficult–a long 549-yard par 5 that requires an approach over a pond.

Getting there : From Dallas, take Hwy. 75 north and exit Arapaho. Turn right and when you come to N. Garland Ave., turn left. Drive to W. Blackburn Rd. and turn west. The course is just down the road.

Good course

This course was a lot of fun. I played it the day after a heavy rain and the course still looked good. I will definitely be back.

Course in great shape and very pretty holes

I forgot how pretty some of the holes look out on the Lakes course. All greens and fairways are in really good shape and rolling true. With some forced carries, tight lanes and small greens there are some real challenges from the blue tees. Great value. Good job Garland.

recommended with provisions

The course is in great shape! A lot of water on the course - it IS the Lakes course, but didn't come into play a lot. However, I believe it is on hole 16, there is a creek all along the right side that isn't depicted on the score card or my sky caddie.

We were right at a 4-hour pace of play (9 am tee time). However, the marshal came up to us on the back around hole 12/13 and informed us we HAD to be finished by 1:00 because there was a shotgun tournament teeing off. That would have been good to know in the pro shop before we teed off or at the turn.

No cart girl (glad we asked!) so had to stop at the turn for provisions. The ladies in the grill are very nice, but definitely not in a hurry. Prices are reasonable, 16 oz beers instead of the traditional 12 ouncers. No coolers on the cart, glad we brought our own.

Would play again & recommend.

Good course especially for the value

Course was overall in really good shape. Greens were a little bumpy and slow but held well. Better yardage markings would also be a great help. All in all a really good course and a great value

gets me everytime, except this time

Finally broke 90 and this thing. Tons of water and hazards on the right. They keep the rough pretty long a lot of times, greens are pretty slow. Bunkers in good shape. This course is tough, but finally was able to get under 90. Ugh!

The Lakes Stays in my Rotation

I play The Lakes at Firewheel monthly. The course was in good condition where it counts (fairways and greens) but rough around the edges. Always a fun layout if you know it. A great value.

Hot, hot, and did i say hot?

Okay, so the heat wasn't the fault of the golf course. First time playing this course and tee time was 11:30 on a Hot Deal. The front desk gentleman was a little less than customer service oriented it once past this, we found a nice little course that could become our home course instead of Los Rios. The fairways, greens, and bunkers were in great shape. The pace of play was great as not many people were playing the Lakes Course.. Had a quick bite at the grill after 9 and the grill was nice and cool. Have had a better burger but it is a golf course, not a restaurant. The on course restrooms are air conditioned and all of the coolers were filled with ice cold water. Only made it through 14 holes before we decided to call it a day due to the heat. However, we look forward to returning and finishing not only this side, but the Old Course as well.

Role Baby Role!

To me, this course is much more difficult than The Old Course. And requires as much thought to get around the course as The Bridges. This time out, the fairways were really hard. So, hitting a record drive should have been no big deal. Good thing is, the greens were very receptive and rolled well. For the duffer, don't even think about cutting the corner on the par four, fifth hole. If you push your drive right on the par five, number eight, hit no more than an eight iron into the fairway, right of the bunker. You will still have a par opportunity. On the par four, twelfth, every thing roles to the right, toward the water, and there's a big tree on the left side of the fairway. So, consider just writing down a double and moving on. Not really. I have parred this hole before. You'll enjoy The Lakes, if you stay out of them.

Ok, but Nothing Special

First time at Firewheel Lakes Course. Overall, it was fine and in good shape, but nothing remarkable or memorable about it.

The course was nice (much better than Firewheel's Old Course). Tee boxes, fairways, bunkers, greens all in good shape.

The Par 3s all felt the same - not a whole lot of difference in distance or club selection. There are some tight fairways to deal with. Not a whole lot of drink / snack cart attention.

The experience was fine, but that's about all I can say. It's not a destination, but it can be close and serviceable for a regular round. Nothing bad to say about the course, but nothing great to say either.

Splish Splash

The only thing keeping me from giving the course an excellent rating is the first hole.
Really ugly rough, dirt, and rocks on the right side of the fairway and rough. Tees, fairways, greens are in fantastic shape. Even with the rain that day, the course was fun to play. Stay out of the rough!!! On par five number 9, ere to the right a touch on your tee shot to avoid some water. Then, if you hit a good one, the duffer (me) needs to lay up with a nice smooth 7 iron. Heroes who go for it are likely to put it in the creek, either left or right of the green. Ask me how I know. Hamburger was really good!

Challenging Lakes Course

Scenic course tucked in the city of Garland. Great, traditional layout that will provide a challenge for any level player if you play from the proper tees. Not a long, course, but need to keep it in play off the tee. Plenty of opportunities with the shorter par 5's. Nice greens! Careful with all the "Lakes!"

The lakes at Firewheel

Course was in great shape, but the pace of play was lacking. Understandably so as it was a great day for golf. Just couldn't get in a rhythm when having to wait on each shot on each hole.

I'll be back!

Enjoyed my time

This course was a fairly difficult one. I liked the challenge though. It was my first time playing and it was difficult one 3-4 holes know how far creeks and lakes and on one hole in particular which fairway to aim for. We had someone with us who had played it before so they did their best to navigate around the course. Greens were a very good pace for me. They seemed hard but we're surprisingly receptive. 4/5 smoothness to them also. Fairways and roughs were mowed an excellent height. Lush roughs. Bunkers had some work being done to a few of them but most did very well to hit out of. Would highly recommend

Lakes course at Firewheel

Play the bridges course at Firewheel. The lakes course was not in that great of shape. The greens were way better at the bridges course and they had GPS in the carts.

Good Course but bring an extra sleeve of balls

This is a good course that makes you focus on shot placement. Unlike the old and bridges course the lakes is all about placement. There are a few holes that allow you to open up with a driver but not many twice I drove it into water because I didn't pay attention to where I wanted the ball to land. The food needs an upgrade and the cart paths mirror Dallas streets with massive bumps and areas of raised concrete. The staff is friendly and I give them an A.
