Firewheel is Texas’ most impressive example of municipal golf. Owned and operated by the city of Garland, and extremely popular because of the fair price and number of available golf holes, Firewheel now sports 63 holes since the new Bridges course opened in the past few years. All three tracks can be challenging because they each incorporate a variety of hazards into their designs, including limestone that is scattered throughout the property.

The Old Course, the traditional layout, was rated No. 1 by the Dallas Morning News. Water hazards come into play throughout the design, such as on hole #18, a 400-yard, par 4, requiring a tee shot and an approach shot over the same creek, which winds through the hole. Hole 9 is the feature hole, a 552-yard par 5 that rolls downhill. The tee shot is into a narrow landing area carved out of trees, and on the approach you must be in perfect position because of the strategically placed pecan trees. Number 18 is challenging with both the tee shot and the approach over a creek that winds through the hole.

Cart Path Only - May as well walked.

The cart came with the Golfnow reservation, but I may as well walked the course since it was cart path only. The took a lot of enjoyment out of the round. Also, there was not cart girl, but they did have water stations throughout the course.

Course layout and conditions were good.

Good but Can Be Better

While the course was in good shape and the greens the best I have seen on this course in a long time, 2-3 group back up in par 3s with no on course marshal to manage is not good, especially on a Sunday.

Course Completely Torn Up

They’re doing a bunch of construction on the Old course which will hopefully improve things, but for now, the course is a mess. The greens are terrible. Most hard as a rock and bumpy/dead. Carts on the cart path only, so A LOT of walking. Sprinkler pieces dug up and laying around all over the course. The 18th had a make-shift green sitting right in the middle of the fairway, like a hundred yards from the actual hole. That was confusing.

Under Construction But Open

Slow play and bad greens to go along with reconstruction. Not the best round I've ever had. I was told that they will be closing the course soon for a major reconstruction, but it appears that they have already started based on the conditions.

Terrible Shape, 18th is a temp green

Played it today and it was a complete mud pit after only a 1/4” of rain last night. The fairways don’t have a lot of grass. I understand they’re about to close for renovations so looks like they aren’t maintaining the course. Which would be nice to know before booking. Greens were a disgrace. Dead in spots, patchy sprouts everywhere else. I’ve never see so many old hole locations with extremely poorly filled holes. It was like the moon’s surface. For $48 thought it was overpriced considering the conditions. I won’t be back until the renovation is complete.

Course I'm very rough sure

Even for the time it year this course is in terrible condition. They are replacing the irrigation system and are not watering the greens so they are awful. The fairways are like concrete.

If fine this course a year or two to recover and then m maybe try it again.

Worst Course in DFW?

I played here ten years or so ago and remember it being a decent course, but they have let it go completely. There was literally ONE tee box that I could get a tee into the ground without breaking it. It is clear they haven’t watered at all this year…greens were terrible. Fairways were worse…nothing but weeds and dirt. I don’t think I hit a single shot off of grass. I hit a perfect 8 iron on one of the par threes, landed it about 10 yards in front of the greeen because it was clear that balls were not stopping on greens, and it still bounced and ended up 5 yards behind the green.

I’m no scratch player, but I play enough to know this is about as bad as it gets…and to top all of that off, they don’t even have a proper bar to drown the sorrows of a terrible round when you’re done.

Never again.

Absolutely Atrocious

The worst conditions I have ever seen a course in. Been playing this course consistently for the last year and a half and stopped playing it because of the winter. Came back this spring and when I say it is pathetic I mean it. I broke 6-7 tees just trying to get them in the tee boxes, middle of the fairway (which I never find myself in except here, of course) is just gravel, no grass to be seen except for the weeds growing around the base of the trees. Construction is going on everywhere. They are chopping down a bunch of trees and there are wood chips lining just about every hole. And of course the range is down when we go, the one savior they could have and we can’t even use it. Bunkers are concrete, greens are half dead everywhere. Pin placements are laughable. Please go anywhere else than this, you will have more fun staying home on your couch than playing this course. Trust me.
