Old at Firewheel Golf Park
About
Firewheel is Texas’ most impressive example of municipal golf. Owned and operated by the city of Garland, and extremely popular because of the fair price and number of available golf holes, Firewheel now sports 63 holes since the new Bridges course opened in the past few years. All three tracks can be challenging because they each incorporate a variety of hazards into their designs, including limestone that is scattered throughout the property.
The Old Course, the traditional layout, was rated No. 1 by the Dallas Morning News. Water hazards come into play throughout the design, such as on hole #18, a 400-yard, par 4, requiring a tee shot and an approach shot over the same creek, which winds through the hole. Hole 9 is the feature hole, a 552-yard par 5 that rolls downhill. The tee shot is into a narrow landing area carved out of trees, and on the approach you must be in perfect position because of the strategically placed pecan trees. Number 18 is challenging with both the tee shot and the approach over a creek that winds through the hole.

Lack of staff apparently
I booked the old course, but the staff at the pro shop recommended the lake course with fewer people playing that afternoon. So this review is for the lakes course, but since most of the comments is about the amenities so this applies to both courses. The pros: staff is friendly..the course layout is interesting enough. Fairways and greens are decent. Pace of play resonance. Price is very good. Cons: there re four golf carts for me to choose, two of them are quite dirty with chunks of foods left on it, and the clean one I chose has a faulty brake lock. I chose the forth one, also not clean with food in some drink holders, but I’ve no other choice. Because I’m leery of their hygiene, I did not once use the water igloos on the course. I want to instead buy a soft drink after my water bottle ran out, but sadly no one mans the canteen, and no drink sold in pro shop. After the round, I went to the restroom, and paper towels ran out, empty. My impression is that the course is good enough and enjoyable, but apparently lack of staffs and poor management makes me hesitant to go again. A pity, for the course is quite ok. No Marshall on course, needless to say. Please make the place clean. Btw, after playing the 4th hole I could not find the5th tee. I wasted 20 minutes to no avail. I finally asked some fellow golfers and they said I’ve to double back to the tunnel leading back to the 1st tee to find it. There was. O direction to tell me this.
Fun Course - Will Be Back
I really enjoyed this course. A few greens are still recovering from the February ice storm but they didn’t impact play as far as I was concerned. The rest of the course was great.
Old Course Firewheel
The course played fair but had some bad spots on the greens. I played the blue tees and enjoyed the great weather but the sand in some of the bunkers needs to be replaced. Overall enjoyable experience.
Old course
Greens that had grass on them rolled true. Many greens had ground under repair
Good fun!
Course is looking great! A couple greens are dealing with some issues but for the most part it was sweet! The staff are awesome here and the pace was perfect! I played the old course and had a blast!
A couple greens needed some fixing but good course to play
Green condition
Some holes green need to repair and tee box like concrete
Hot day on the links
This is one of our favorite courses to play, Some of the greens were a little beat up from the winter storms, but over all the course is in good shape. No beverage cart was a bummer. We will be back
Old Course
Easy course but with a little difficulty on some holes. Plenty of trees so gotta hit it straight. Water on 2 or 3 holes. Great course to hone in your game
Not bad considering the February freeze
Overall tee boxes in good shape, A few of the tee boxes were hard or had no grass. Fairways were in good shape , with a little bit of fertilizer, water and care they could be as good as as the fairways at Grapevine. Rough is not too long but if you find yourself off the fairways and under a tree, don’t expect grass. The greens are playable but they still have not recovered from the freeze.
Good value
Greens are pretty beat up from the winter storm but still fun course.
