Old at Firewheel Golf Park
About
Firewheel is Texas’ most impressive example of municipal golf. Owned and operated by the city of Garland, and extremely popular because of the fair price and number of available golf holes, Firewheel now sports 63 holes since the new Bridges course opened in the past few years. All three tracks can be challenging because they each incorporate a variety of hazards into their designs, including limestone that is scattered throughout the property.
The Old Course, the traditional layout, was rated No. 1 by the Dallas Morning News. Water hazards come into play throughout the design, such as on hole #18, a 400-yard, par 4, requiring a tee shot and an approach shot over the same creek, which winds through the hole. Hole 9 is the feature hole, a 552-yard par 5 that rolls downhill. The tee shot is into a narrow landing area carved out of trees, and on the approach you must be in perfect position because of the strategically placed pecan trees. Number 18 is challenging with both the tee shot and the approach over a creek that winds through the hole.

Love this course
I love this course. although some of the ladies tee boxes are hard as a rock but overall this course is great for the money and the pace of play is excellent. I did have one issue where a drive my husband hit went a little left and ended up on the rim of another fairway, the player there picked up my husbands ball. Please learn the etiquette, Wonderful course and wonderful pace wonderful price.
Course condition
Course was in great condition tee times for on time everybody was working smoothly. Would recommend to all players.
Very enjoyable round on a somewhat surprisingly good course.
Fairways are generous, but greens and surrounding obstacles are challenging.
Water comes into play more than I anticipated, mostly with creeks that cross the fairway or in front of greens.
Greens were a little fuzzy and slower than I anticipated. But, they were consistent. A couple of greens were in need of repair.
Great course
Very good green condition !!
Firewheel Old Course
For a long time I have been reading comments about what bad condition this course has been in. I played the Old Course today for the first time in over two years and found the course to be in good shape. The tee boxes, fairways and traps were good. Only two green were still in a state of repair from the major freeze back in February. These two greens still need some attention but overall the couse is pretty good. Give it it a try.
It was ok
I was surprised at what shape this course was in, I know its that time of year but it seemed extremely brown to me. I still love this course and would recommend it but it was a bit disappointing. I will still golf here though, its one of my favorites!
Good value
1. Good value for the $$. I paid $24
2. A number of greens are finally being repaired/patched from the storm damage in February
3. Sand in the bunkers was nice and fresh!
4.Tee boxes were rock hard
5.Paceof play was good. Right at 4 hours for 18
6. Fairways and rough were decent.
7. Weather was great and I made 3 birdies on the back!!
Lack of staff apparently
I booked the old course, but the staff at the pro shop recommended the lake course with fewer people playing that afternoon. So this review is for the lakes course, but since most of the comments is about the amenities so this applies to both courses. The pros: staff is friendly..the course layout is interesting enough. Fairways and greens are decent. Pace of play resonance. Price is very good. Cons: there re four golf carts for me to choose, two of them are quite dirty with chunks of foods left on it, and the clean one I chose has a faulty brake lock. I chose the forth one, also not clean with food in some drink holders, but I’ve no other choice. Because I’m leery of their hygiene, I did not once use the water igloos on the course. I want to instead buy a soft drink after my water bottle ran out, but sadly no one mans the canteen, and no drink sold in pro shop. After the round, I went to the restroom, and paper towels ran out, empty. My impression is that the course is good enough and enjoyable, but apparently lack of staffs and poor management makes me hesitant to go again. A pity, for the course is quite ok. No Marshall on course, needless to say. Please make the place clean. Btw, after playing the 4th hole I could not find the5th tee. I wasted 20 minutes to no avail. I finally asked some fellow golfers and they said I’ve to double back to the tunnel leading back to the 1st tee to find it. There was. O direction to tell me this.
