Old at Firewheel Golf Park
About
Firewheel is Texas’ most impressive example of municipal golf. Owned and operated by the city of Garland, and extremely popular because of the fair price and number of available golf holes, Firewheel now sports 63 holes since the new Bridges course opened in the past few years. All three tracks can be challenging because they each incorporate a variety of hazards into their designs, including limestone that is scattered throughout the property.
The Old Course, the traditional layout, was rated No. 1 by the Dallas Morning News. Water hazards come into play throughout the design, such as on hole #18, a 400-yard, par 4, requiring a tee shot and an approach shot over the same creek, which winds through the hole. Hole 9 is the feature hole, a 552-yard par 5 that rolls downhill. The tee shot is into a narrow landing area carved out of trees, and on the approach you must be in perfect position because of the strategically placed pecan trees. Number 18 is challenging with both the tee shot and the approach over a creek that winds through the hole.

Bunkers are mud
This is a good course that has its moments but the bunkers are brutal. In most cases the bunkers are down to rock hard dirt or they have massive man made holes in them. I don't understand why the city can keep the bunkers on the lakes and bridges course in such great shape but wont put good sand in the old course.
Pace of play was great and the staff was very nice. The greens were fast but true and other than the bunkers I have no complaints.
Great Course
First time playing since I moved to Texas about 4 months ago. Great course, great, fun layout. The greens were a little hard and the bunkers were unplayable due to the heavy rain the day before. I will definitely play the course again and will be trying the lakes and bridges courses as well. This will more than likely be my go to course.
Great Course Great Staff
From the time I pulled up the staff was very friendly. Eric in the pro-shop greeted my group with great enthusiasm and made sure we had everything we needed. The player assistant made sure we had our cart and were ready to go. The course itself was in good shape. Tee boxes are nice, bunkers could use some work but that can be said for most courses. Cart girl made a good pace around the course and was very friendly.
Old Course Firewheel Golf Course- Garland, Tx.
Lots of fun! The course was in excellent condition, despite of a lot of rain the previous night. Not a difficult course for someone with a high handicap like me. Despite being fairly crowded because of the holiday, play was smooth. All in all a pleasant outing!
A great deal
Minus the a-hole I got paired with I liked this course very much. I'll definitely be back.
Fun Course
This was a fairly easy course for new golfers. Wide open and hardly any water. The bunkers were hard as a rock but you shouldn't be in those anyways. Cart girl didn't show up until the 18th hole and the pace of play was so slow. All in all not bad would recommend and will play again.
Easy and great value for money
Nice course and great value for money. Tee box grass is mostly too long, but fairways and greens are are better than the greenfee makes you expect
Good course for a good price
Second time playin this course. Greens were well kept and plenty of water, trees, and sand traps to ad variety to the course. Great pace of play!
Good condition - will play again
Good value for the money. Course was in great conditions, greens were in excellent condition. Course is not overly challenging, but very enjoyable. If returning to Firewheel, I would probably choose the Lakes or Bridges over the Old Course. But nevertheless, the Old Course is well worth the cost.
Great play for price
Great play for price. It did rain on me both times I have played but when it wasn't raining the course played pretty well. Greens are slow but that would be my only feedback.
In better shape than expected
Haven't played the Old course in over 20 years. Was pleasantly surprised and the greens were in very good shape. Will definitely come back. Great value especially late afternoon rates.
