Old at Firewheel Golf Park
About
Firewheel is Texas’ most impressive example of municipal golf. Owned and operated by the city of Garland, and extremely popular because of the fair price and number of available golf holes, Firewheel now sports 63 holes since the new Bridges course opened in the past few years. All three tracks can be challenging because they each incorporate a variety of hazards into their designs, including limestone that is scattered throughout the property.
The Old Course, the traditional layout, was rated No. 1 by the Dallas Morning News. Water hazards come into play throughout the design, such as on hole #18, a 400-yard, par 4, requiring a tee shot and an approach shot over the same creek, which winds through the hole. Hole 9 is the feature hole, a 552-yard par 5 that rolls downhill. The tee shot is into a narrow landing area carved out of trees, and on the approach you must be in perfect position because of the strategically placed pecan trees. Number 18 is challenging with both the tee shot and the approach over a creek that winds through the hole.

A slow day on a windy day.
We had a confirmed tee time at 8:22 AM. We were ready to play at 08:10 AM. We had to wait in line for a chance to tee off until 08:45 AM! Apparently the golf course has no Starters nor Marshals! Too many golfers are thus allowed to get in line as they please or the the Golf Course overbooks Golfers. The result was a very slow day. On the positive side, one may get to rest a lot while waiting to take a shot at Firewheel Old Course...
Solid course
Greens were in good shape, but a bit slow. Some fairways We're pretty dry/hard, which gave very tight lies and felt like hitting off concrete. That said, and had a great time overall. Would recommend
Can't beat the price and level of maintenance in my opinion. Fun course, various levels of short to long holes. Bunkers were in bad shape, but I guess I shouldn't be in there anyway :) Overall, great course, great price.
bad sand traps
Course was hard and dry. Needed water!! Sandtraps were unplayable. some spots had sand others were hard and unplayable.
Don't play after it rains
Played on a Saturday morning after some thunderstorms on Friday night so it was cart path only. Lots of very muddy areas on the course. This could've contributed to the 5 hour round and super slow greens.
For $39 on a weekend morning the course has great value. Golf course is fairly open with a few tighter holes with some water. I would like to check it out again in drier conditions.
Greens?
The greens were the slowest I've played on outside of playing on greens that have recently been punched. It appeared they hadn't been cut in a couple of days. Was like putting on fairway grass. Bunkers were not maintained and puddles in places. Not bad value for the money but wish the greens were just a little better. Played the Lakes course the same day and it was in better condition.
Great lay out. The putting green in great shape long par 5s
Average Course
The sand traps were poor and if you were even a little off the center of the fairway, it was tough to find your ball. The greens were in decent shape. Middle of the Road course.
You get what you pay for
Way too many people were packed in. We played about 12 holes in 5 and a half hours and gave up. The other players weren't very classy either. Blaring music as they would pull up to hit their ball and slam on their brakes. Didn't matter if you were in your backswing or not. We won't be going back.
Nice pace
For twenty bucks a person I will be playing again soon.
Pace of play is awesome for beginners such as my self. No one rushing behind you and the staff was excellent.
Showed up early both days I played and they let us out on the course when we got there.
The staff was very friendly. The course has a nice layout. The sand in the sand traps had no softness to them. The dirt was packed. The Tee boxes didn't have much grass which the fairways were similar. The greens were good. Overall the course is in winter condition. Hopefully it will get better as the weather gets warmer. The course needs some TLC.
Good course but needs some TLC
This is the oldest of the three Firewheel courses and it still offers a challenge to most who play it. However there are some areas where the city of Garland has neglected it. The bunkers need work with some new sand instead of the hard clay sand mix that is in there now. Another area of attention needs to be the tee boxes. They need to be leveled out and reseeded.
The staff is great and it's a good course for just about anyone. I just hope the powers that be will fix the issues I mentioned above.
Old DFW Standby
The Old Course was a pleasant surprise!
The staff in the clubhouse were both solid, and welcoming, with the practice areas more extensive than many other area courses.
The course was laid out in a traditional manner with an even mix of par 3, 4s, and 5s, as well as an interesting mix of dog legs, straight carries, and some slight elevation change.
The course did have some hardpan fairways, and bunkers that needed work but for late March the greens were acceptable. Some holes required good course management regarding layups or carries over water.
Will likely be back, if nothing else to give the Lakes and Bridges courses a shot.
Forgotten course
The Old Course used to be the pride of Garland.
Alas it is now a forgotten member of the family.
Really enjoy the layout. If the city would just give a little love to the bunkers the course would stay on my rotation. Was able to get a hot deal and wanted to see what shape it was in. Greens were fine. Tee boxes were so -so. Would recommend you play but not at full price if you can get a good deal.
Otherwise play Lakes or Bridges.
Enjoyable round
The round was fun, the front 9 quality was better than the back. The back 9 fairways were not very good. But all the greens were in good shape, I would go back for sure.
