Old at Firewheel Golf Park
About
Firewheel is Texas’ most impressive example of municipal golf. Owned and operated by the city of Garland, and extremely popular because of the fair price and number of available golf holes, Firewheel now sports 63 holes since the new Bridges course opened in the past few years. All three tracks can be challenging because they each incorporate a variety of hazards into their designs, including limestone that is scattered throughout the property.
The Old Course, the traditional layout, was rated No. 1 by the Dallas Morning News. Water hazards come into play throughout the design, such as on hole #18, a 400-yard, par 4, requiring a tee shot and an approach shot over the same creek, which winds through the hole. Hole 9 is the feature hole, a 552-yard par 5 that rolls downhill. The tee shot is into a narrow landing area carved out of trees, and on the approach you must be in perfect position because of the strategically placed pecan trees. Number 18 is challenging with both the tee shot and the approach over a creek that winds through the hole.

Best Deal in DFW
The after 2pm rate at Firewheel on GolfNow is the best deal in DFW golf. The course is always in great shape, the course never seems to be too crowded, and there are some really fun holes.
used to be good
I started playing this course in the 90's and the course was always in great shape. I moved and stopped playing for about 13 years. I recently got back into the game and play once a week sometimes 2. This course has a great layout and is fun to play but the management of the course is horrible. Tee boxes are hard as a rock and need to be watered and fertilized. The sand traps are rock hard. like concrete. literally no sand in them. several have been under repair for months. Whats more frustrating is that they have sand in a pit next to the 17th green. Both the Lakes course and the Bridges have great bunkers with plenty of sand in them. This needs to be taken care of by management.
Not bad, but not great
GREAT day that started off fine. Played as a 2-some. Nice couple let us play through on 7 but when we hit 10, it was a constant wait. Actually paired up with the two in front of us but still horribly slow. Foursome of older gentlemen in front of us seemed to be in their own world when on the green. At the par 3 15th, we waited with the 2-some behind us as well they had everything backed up so badly. Marshall finally came around when we were on 18....about 8 holes too late.
Fairway grass was fine considering the season but leaves everywhere. Lost several balls on the fairway due to the leaves. Go OOB....forget it, just drop and keep going. Bunkers were HORRIBLE. Some were under construction, those that were not consisted of a quarter inch of packed sand over hardpacked mud. You could literally walk across the sand and not see any footprints. Ridiculous. On the other hand, the greens were really good, especially for December. Plugs for moved cup locations were done sloppily though as I hit two that dramatically altered my ball path.
Pretty basic course but much better than a regular muni course, and with some challenging areas. Have played Lakes also and will probably be back, but not on a weekend and not until next spring/summer so the leaves will not be an issue and they have time to fix the bunkers. Staff was nice as well.
My Kingdom for a Bunker
Without wind, this course has very little defense, other than my lack of ability. The greens were really good. They held a good approach shot and rolled true - for the most part. Hot dogs were better than most municipal dogs. BUT the bunkers were more like hard pan with a raised rim around it. That's why I rated the course conditions as fair. Never saw a Marshall. The twosome was slower than our foursome, but wouldn't let us play through.
Firewheel - Old Course
The Old Course is a good value for the money considering what other courses charge.
When it's breezy, swing it easy.
The review title is something one our group's caddies said during a round at Carnoustie many years ago and it certainly applied the day we played the Old Course at Firewheel. Course conditions were very good and the green speed not overwhelming. Pace of play was very good especially for a weekend. We finished our round in four hours. Water comes into play on several holes and position off the tee is important to being able to approach the flag. We did not play from the tips and I would suggest only the most advanced players take that option. The staff in the shop was very professional and friendly. I will definitely play this course again.
Nice Option
I like this course. It is "old", and I like the 'old' designs. I love having a shot into a Par 4, but because I blocked it to the right, I now have to navigate around 1 lone tree, which guards the front right of the green.
The pace was extremely slow; but that's "par for the course" at these rates, and on a Sunday afternoon.
There are 45 other holes at this complex, so this course is at the bottom of the totem pole, esp. for cart girl coverage. We saw her once in 5 hours.
Had fun
Course was a little rough condition wise but very playable. Greens were ok,. Played on a Sat at 12:45, and our 4some of avg golfers never waited or was pushed from behind. $29 ea was fair. Staff very friendly.
Best place to play
So I can let you know that I had a great time at the Firewheel Golf Course all three courses are in excellent condition the staff is very friendly the service is great I just don't know how to put this but if you want to have a good time and play come to Firewheel
Great Value
Nice course that was well maintained except the bunkers were basically unusable. The pace was also relatively slow, especially for a weekday.
Nice course
Even after a hot summer the course was in great shape
Fairways were winter condition. Dryed out and hard. Better to be in the rough.
Not sure if they hate golf now peeps. But the service was the worst I have experienced in the DFW area. Don't want to go into it but if you can avoid this place I would. They feel they are special but give me a break the qplace is barely hanging on.
