Old at Firewheel Golf Park
About
Firewheel is Texas’ most impressive example of municipal golf. Owned and operated by the city of Garland, and extremely popular because of the fair price and number of available golf holes, Firewheel now sports 63 holes since the new Bridges course opened in the past few years. All three tracks can be challenging because they each incorporate a variety of hazards into their designs, including limestone that is scattered throughout the property.
The Old Course, the traditional layout, was rated No. 1 by the Dallas Morning News. Water hazards come into play throughout the design, such as on hole #18, a 400-yard, par 4, requiring a tee shot and an approach shot over the same creek, which winds through the hole. Hole 9 is the feature hole, a 552-yard par 5 that rolls downhill. The tee shot is into a narrow landing area carved out of trees, and on the approach you must be in perfect position because of the strategically placed pecan trees. Number 18 is challenging with both the tee shot and the approach over a creek that winds through the hole.

pace
open holes in front of the foursome in front of us. very slow, and poor golfers with no sense to let our group play through. duffers missed fairway on every hole and then spent time looking for balls.....needed marshalling or education!
Firewheel old course
Great day, great course. Fairways and greens good condition. Pace of play flowed well.
Good value, need to lower the rough
Spent to much time trying to find balls in un mowed 4-6 inch rough that was only 5-10 feet from the fairways and greens. Other than that, the course has nice trees, fair layout and good value
Fire wheel Old Course
Great shape fairways were not wet, greens were slow, needed to roll, sand traps were flooded overall a 7 on a 10 scale, I will be back to play again,
not as good as the others
Dollar for dollar I'd play Lakes or Bridges(my fav) before this one again. I'm an ex golf course super and was saddened by the amount of carts driven around the greens and tees. Guys so close that they could step from cart onto teebox...a SHAME. Teeboxes littered with broken tees. Huge areas of dirt around greens due to everyone parking there under the trees. No marshal to enforce proper edicate. While i would not "recommend" this as a must play.....it is fine for a cheap round to get in some practice.
ENJOYABLE
BAD WEATHER, BUT ENJOYABLE WITH FRIENDS CHATTERING AND BIRDS SINGING! BE CAREFUL MOSQUITOES!!!!!
More bang for your buck
This is one of the best courses in the area for the price. Sometimes pace of play can be a little slow but that is the case for most places.
Will definitely be back
This course has been on my list of courses to play and I'm glad I was able to cross it off. The course is gorgeous with nice wide fairways for newer players like myself. I only had two complaints. First, there were a group of 6 in front of us and we had to wait at every hole. 18 holes ended up taking us just north of 5 hours. Also, I didn't see a cart girl the entire time we were there. They have water throughout the course and vending machines but the none of the machines took dollar bills. Other than that, it was great time and I would recommend it to anyone.
Great Value
Courses was clean and well maintained. Staff was friendly and helpful. Not overly crowded.
Nice Track
Couple draw backs - the design or placement of several tee boxes on the Old Course relative to some opposing cart paths and greens or previous greens played. You are in range to be hit or hit someone.
Bunkers weren't in good shape.
Greens were good. Soft.
Olde Course...Old time fun!
Great value and a fun course to play. If you live in the Richardson, Garland area, you should be here!
water drainage problems
though it had rained the day(s) before i played that was no excuse for some of the problems i had:
multiple bunkers had over a foot of standing water in the bunker. any shot in there you could not even find the ball
to get form one hole to another you have to go under a road through a tunnel there was over a foot of standing water in the tunnel. one cart almost got stuck and the person in the cart got SOAKED.
Greens had many burned out spots and had not been cleaned of debris (worms from prior flooding, etc.)
fairways were thin at best. many fairway shots were hitting on mud.
I had told this to one of the attendants and all they said was 'go tell them in the pro shop.'
probably won't play that course again.
This was the worst course I've ever played
I could spend 15 dollars and play a course 100 times as nice as this dump. Fairways are dry and hard, bunkers are hard, greens are horrendous. I couldn't believe it.
Challenging course for military golfers
Great time. Pretty course. Many challenges.
Hit em straight and you'll really enjoy game.
Fairways are still hard and very little grass. We need rain. Have fun. it's only golf.
Nice Day, little Windy
The title of the course pretty much sums it up. the "old" course.
i can't knock the club for the grass because its still early in the spring, however if something isn't done to the grass soon it will be a desert come Mid July. They really need to do something about the bunkers... no fluff just dirt. I like the course and i know that its cheaper.. just wish they would put a little bit more into it. I will play here again bc they always have good deals on golf now.
Firewheel old
Saw cart girl once in 4.5 hours. Greens are in great shape. Tee boxes hard as a rock
Nice course
The weather was perfect, the course was in very good condition, and the staff was very friendly. The pin placement on the greens made it a little more challenging than I remember, but it was a fun time.
overbooked
Had us starting with two walking players. A three some in front of us that couldn't get of the tee box. Very disappointed that marshalled weren't hurrying them. Teed off at 10:20 finished at 3:20. Pace was horrible
Bridges
The greens are in pristine condition as well as the rest of the course. Some area courses do not look this good in the summer let alone in early February. The staff is very friendly and helpful.
