Old at Firewheel Golf Park
About
Firewheel is Texas’ most impressive example of municipal golf. Owned and operated by the city of Garland, and extremely popular because of the fair price and number of available golf holes, Firewheel now sports 63 holes since the new Bridges course opened in the past few years. All three tracks can be challenging because they each incorporate a variety of hazards into their designs, including limestone that is scattered throughout the property.
The Old Course, the traditional layout, was rated No. 1 by the Dallas Morning News. Water hazards come into play throughout the design, such as on hole #18, a 400-yard, par 4, requiring a tee shot and an approach shot over the same creek, which winds through the hole. Hole 9 is the feature hole, a 552-yard par 5 that rolls downhill. The tee shot is into a narrow landing area carved out of trees, and on the approach you must be in perfect position because of the strategically placed pecan trees. Number 18 is challenging with both the tee shot and the approach over a creek that winds through the hole.

Would be good without the group in front of us.
There were two of us behind a foursome. We waited on them all day and it was very slow. Finally on the 14th hole we just drove around them and played the last four without seeing a single other person. We had fun the course was in good shape for a city course. We got a sandwich on the turn trying to space the group in front of us farther ahead and the staff at the grill did such a great job the golfers were still in the fairway by the time we got back in our cart. Overall good course for the money. Watch out for people that think they are PGA golfers laying down on greens to read every 60 foot putt.
Good golf for under $1 per hole
I caught a Golfnow special for $15 and was pleased with the value. Greens were smooth and consistent, if not a bit slow. Play "lift, clean, and place" through the green to compensate for spotty fairway grass.
A great course with some challenges, but mainly for the bogey golfer.
The course was in good condition, except for the tee areas on some holes, which really were a disaster. Otherwise a nice course with big trees and some small hilly parts. I enjoyed the day, but would have preferred electric carts instead of the gas ones, they destroy the nature experience a bit.
Not the friendliest personnel, but they did what they should.
This is a good course
This is a course that is in my regular rotation of approx. 10 in the area. Simply put, if I still play there after 8 years I really like it and the staff. The staff by the way are great, very friendly.
Nice course
Nice course for the price. Well maintained greens and the fairways were in good condition. Would play here again in the near future.
Pretty good course
Our first time playing here and frankly we enjoyed it very much.
Our only complaint is that a few of the tee boxes don't get enough sun, so on a slightly rainy day they are muddy. But other than that very enjoyable!
Greens in excellent condition right now
Best value for $ I've had in awhile. Course in great shape & greens are phenomenal!
Great shape!
For a Dallas area course in early Sept. the greens were in fantastic shape. Most courses of same value have burned greens in 100 degree weather, after no rain for a month. On a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being perfect TV style care, I would give an 8-9 points. Other muni courses in the area would get maybe a 5.
Nice greens. Partially drought stressed.
This is what I would call a "value: course. I played it with my wife on Sept. 2, 2013. Even though it was a holiday, there were not a lot of people on the course. We were able to play in exactly four hours.
I've played this course in the past and it has been in better condition. Having said that, the greens are still quite good and roll true. The teeboxes are in poor shape, some almost bald, and there are quite a few spots on the fairways that are overtly stressed from lack of water. Overall course condition will likely improve but it is evident that the lack of rain has affected it's condition.
This is a fairly easy course, made difficult only by the occasional narrowness of certain tee shots. In some cases it is too narrow - but without it, the course would be defenseless.
Good money
Great buy for the course. The length off the tee, we played the blues, was perfect for my friends and me. We are between 10-25 handicaps and had a great time, as long as we got off the tee. It had rained during the morning but the course handled the wetness just fine.
The Old Course greens are well maintained.
I found the greens to the old course well maintained and moderately fast. The fairways need a little work and some of the tee boxes also but overall it's a nice course.
Great course, loved it!
I would go back in heartbeat! Firewheel has 3 courses and gets alot of play, but they keep up the course very well.
you cant win them all
Second time out here. Limited yardage markers, aka sprinkler heads. Bunkers not raked. greens rolled ok but was spotty in places. Better value at other locations. May return but not likely.
Challenging but fun
Some holes were tough due to pin position and room behind the green. On most of the holes, if you missed long, the ball is gone. No matter the handicap, I recommend this course to anyone.
Great Value
Played the Bridges for 19.99, which is a ridiculous deal. Honestly 29.99 is a great deal for this course. It's unfair that Golfnow puts the reviews of all 3 together because the Bridges is a separate course and clubhouse a mile away, and is gorgeous and pristine. But Golfnow's rates for all 3 courses is very very fair if not remarkable!
This course needs work
There were more than a few tee boxes with little to no grass. I know it's the rough but it's hard losing balls in the clumps of grass left behind by your mowers. Fairways were cut well. Bunkers were not well kept. Lastly they are working around the edges of the greens, you can tell they have planted new grass and there are a few seams.
Course had a give me your money and not much contact after that approach. No cart girl or Marshall's from what I saw on a Saturday afternoon.
Great course
usually around $20 for a fantastic course, play the lakes/bridges if you can they are not much more expensive and much better quality
Good, could be great
Staff is friendly and helpful, course is in good shape. Needs some attention on some greens and tee boxes. Biggest complaint was inconsistent traps, some soft, some hard, some flooded etc... Will play again and enjoyed round.
"Very Nice Course Design"
The "Old Course" at Firewheel has a lot of history, and it has a nice course design. It is not maintained like some of the newer courses at Firewheel, but it was a nice day. Bunkers needed sand, the rough was very difficult and the greens were in good shape, no dead areas, but the speed on the greens were a little slow. The price was right, and the day was fun, so try "The Old Course" at Firewheel you will be glad you did.
SLOW PLAY PLAGUES THIS GOLF COURSE, MANAGEMENT HAS LET THIS FACILITY GO DOWN.
Tee Time was 45 late, round took over five hours. No sand in the bunkers and just an overall rundown look and feel. Not worth the $42 I paid
