Awesome course
Great course in pretty good shape. Can't beat playing here for $40 in the afternoon, great deal.
MD. National on the soggy turf
We received 33$ discount using Golf Now.......we played the day after torrential rains. The course was in good shape, they did a phenomenal jog having it ready to play
Hidden Gem
2nd time playing this course and would highly recommend. As it is off the beaten path, it is far less crowded than other courses on a weekend.
My only complaint is they did not have a cart girl. The way my golf game goes up and down, that is a necessity.
Beautuful Course
Beautiful course will play again on my next trip to Maryland. Staff was outstanding.
One of Maryland's Finest
I drive about 70 Min to reach this course and each time I go, it's worth it. From the call to book a tee time to the last goodbye, the staff in my opinion are helpful, professional and genuinely want to make this a great experience. Carts are equipped with GPS, ball and club cleaners and a handy small Ice and drink holder. The course fee includes range balls and an excellent chipping and putting area.
The Course:
Challenging with long holes weaved into the winding hills. Par 3s, which include two which are well below you (club down two clubs) and two other par 3's between 175 and 200 yds are challenging but fair. At every turn, the course offers spectacular views of the surrounding mountains. The course was in terrific shape, with divots repaired from the previous day and greens in good shape. I am a bogey golfer, over 60 and this course presents some challenges to my inability to drive the T shot more than 225 yds.
The Clubhouse and staff:
Breakfast and lunch were served promptly by staff that were friendly and professional. Had the BBQ Sandwhich and a Caesar Salad...delicious. "Andy", the manager that day was welcoming and positive both when we arrived and upon departing the course. "Cart guys" were right there when needed and upbeat. At least 6 times when playing our round we saw the beverage and snack cart on a Saturday.
Bottom line: I will come again, both for the course conditions and location but also the professional and welcoming staff.
AS Advertised...Excellent Course one of best in the area.
Played this course today and cant wait to return. The fairways and greens were perfect even though the area had a lot of rain the previous day. If you don't hit it in the fairway you are screwed....rough isn't bad but the high grass is impossible to hit out of. The par 3s were really challenging ..be happy to walk away with a par .. Really loved how they provide GPS locator with course map.
Slow play ruins my golf round
Yesterday (4/23) is my second time in the month playing at Maryland National. The course condition definitely is better than Musket Ridge where I played a week ago. I love Maryland National's layout and every hole is very interesting. However, it was a busy day at Maryland National and it took 5 hours and 10 minutes to finish 18 holes. We basically had to wait for every single shot. There are several short holes starting from the 9th, so that made the wait even more painful.
Wet and cold
The weather kept changing, drove to course - started pouring and 52 f. We arrived an hour prior asked about a refund as I was a VIP member. Was informed by staff that they received a call from Golf Now and stated that they were open - so no refund. Even with a Golf now hot deal this was still an extremely expensive course. We inquired about next day play said nothing was available. So we started playing - as the round went on it rained harder and harder - made a birthday present not so nice. We are from Michigan in honesty most of our high end courses are in much better shape as many of the greens have weeds and strange grass growing in them. It was also cart path only and 90 degrees on most holes. Very tough in a down pour. Might be an unfair rating but under the circumstances it is what it is. Whiskey Creek was a much nicer venue and half the price.
Would be nice if it wasn't a down pour - hard to review
I believe this is a very nice course however the rain and cool temperatures ruined a chance to play an enjoyable round. Very scenic, some of the greens had weeds which for this high end course shouldn't happen. We played Whiskey Creek earlier in the week and felt that was a much nicer course and half the money. I shouldn't be so harsh but with the technology today and knowing how the weather system was not going to give any relief we should have had the option to cancel and get our money back. They said golf now called but Maryland National told them we were open - so it was play or lose your money. That didn't set well with me a VIP member - yes it was within the hour and the weather report changed every 4 hours crazy. In the area for a conference - would chose other courses in the area now I know what I know for the price point. They are very proud of their top 10 public course in Maryland.
This course has a picturesque landscapes and well kept!
Maryland National is one of my favorite courses to play. It is challenging yet fun. I love that they keep it so well and I don't need to rush my game all the time:!
Great Layout, Terrible Service
Played this course with a group traveling from NY. We were the only foursome on the course, and yet they call it in-season and we had to pay the same rate it costs to play a Saturday Morning in June. There had been a good deal of rain during the week, but because of the winds the course was fairly dry, and playing cart paths only was overly punitive. We played another course the following morning in the same area and they were at 90 degrees. Pro-Shop was very poorly stocked (In-season) and the Pro and Asst. Pro were extremely rude. It was too cold to play a full 18 on a replay, so we asked about a special 9 hole rate - but were shut down with a curt "No". We were going to go into the empty grill room to have lunch but decided to take our business elsewhere. Going to Northern Maryland for golf? Visit another of the fine courses in the area, and stay away from this over-rated and well under serviced thorn - we know we will.
Maryland National - Fun with some throw away holes!
I confess to having a bit of an attitude about the course because it was "cart path only" and this proved more taxing than simply walking the course. Also slowed the pace of play...
What cart path only exposed was the "childishness" of a number of the hazards. This includes steep hills that dont affect the fairways, lots of curbs on the cart paths that divert rolling balls, and at least 4 holes on the course that just seem "squeezed in". There are some majestic and fabulous holes on this property, but they are coupled with short, skinny Par 4's you might find on your local executive course. These same holes are very humid and full of bugs in the summer time.
Most annoying, I lost $ because the GPS STOPS working when you leave the cart path on "cart path only days". Whenever we have GPS Carts, we play for $ on distance to pin from drive. we had one that came down to angle to the green and get a "red" screen 15 ft off the cart path. ARRGG
NO STAFF IN SNACK BAR AT THE TURN! (we think we saw him getting rolls out of a shed at 10th tee)
This course is fantastic, amenities are high quality and course maintenance beyond reproach. But it's expensive and deserves criticism for missing things a more humble course delivers with ease.
Something About This Place
I've played here a few times, and enjoy the course, but there's always something about it that makes me feel like it's missing something. I brought a friend for his first go at the course, and he agreed that it's nice, but it's not great.
The layout gets a bit jumbled together at times, but it's interesting. Still happy that tree is gone from #2. Greens are small and with some elevated that makes them tricky if you're not on your game. As others have stated as well, you do get plenty of highway noise from I-70. As for the course conditions, you can score on it if you're playing well. There were some rough patches, and the traps were really bare, but hopefully before the season really starts they take care of that. The rough is down right now too, so you can find your ball (and a few others) if you spray it a bit.
I've never felt like this course is worth its full freight price. It's not as nice of a layout as Musket Ridge down the road, and Worthington or Whiskey Creek in Urbana are much better plays. The GPS carts are helpful. Their tavern looks nice, but we waited almost 10 minutes after the round and no one came to the bar, so we left.
You can do worse, but you can do better too. But if you get a discount time, it's worth a go.
