Challenges a Plenty
This was my first time playing this course. I had read that it was long but had no idea it was as difficult in stretches. All started well off the first few boxes, then I went into some kind of hazy nightmare. I recall trying to put the ball into a 20 yard spot or pay the price. I wouldn't say it's not fair and it's well maintained, just bring your dart throwing "A" game or go home shaking your head.
Maintenance is outstanding
First time playing here. First off the carts are clean, look fairly new, with a very helpful large screen GPS system. Second to none, from hole layout, yardage, and cart path notices. Ball washer and club brush. Check in was quick and easy ,very nice clubhouse, well stocked pro shop, large and inviting restaruant. and had adequate range for warming up. Starter was friendly and informative, Greens rolled well, but what stood out to me was the bentgrass fairways. Great choice when building the course, and are in great shape for winter. Variety of shot making, from large landing areas to tight ones with little forgivness, forced carries and elevation changes., tall rough areas throughout the course. Only negative is the sand is thin in the bunkers and they need renovated. Right greenside bunker on #10 looked really bad, and the right greenside bunker on #18 had drainage gravel spread througout. Director of golf was on the spot with a replacement cart for are playing partners, as the juice ran out on the way to #10. Tuna Salad sandwich and Bloody Mary was great at the turn and the service was quick. The quick iteam menu posted on the counter is helpful and smart. Didn"t see any notice on the GPS system or a number to call and notify the restaurant early, so they have it ready when you pull up to the tenth tee. It took 5 hours to play, considering the challenging course and teeing off at 930 on a Saturday, thats to be expected. Overall it was a great golf outing and had a great time.
Overall Solid Course
The course is in excellent condition for February, especially the greens. Fantastic views and overall great value.
My only critique is that the tees were pushed too far forward. We played the gold tees, which are 6500 on the scorecard, and it played closer to 6000.
Great CourseGreat Course
For the time of the year the course is in good shape
Nice course if willing to make the drive
Maryland National is not conveniently located to much, but those willing to make the drive will be rewarded with a course that is very enjoyable and among the best in the area. Arthur Hills' design features numerous holes cut into the side of a large hill. Unfortunately, these holes also have minuscule fairways that punish the average golfer.
Otherwise, there are plenty of dramatic elevation changes and stunning views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. If you play during peak foliage, you'll have plenty of colorful pictures. Course conditions are very good, just wish it were closer to civilization.
One of the Best Public Courses in MD
Took a day off from work and got a late morning tee time with discount. Easily one of the best kept public courses I've played for less than $100 (and I got off for < $60). You can tell the staff takes care of this course. A decent about of elevation changes and can play a lot more difficult when the wind picks up, but completely worth it. Bunkers, fairways, and rough are well maintained. Been comparing everything else to this course ever since.
Car path only
This was the first time playing this course. The feel and look of this course was fantastic. The club house and dinning area was great. The course was a big challenge but fun. Only negative was playing car path only. I felt to much excess getting (walking) over large mounds and hills that were not nessary. The condition of the course would not have been altered with the carts at 90 degree angles. For this reason only I would have to rethink playing there again. Other than this had a good time.
A Beautiful and Challenging Layout
Maryland National is a beautifully designed and a very challenging golf course. Although the weather was frigid, the low temperatures didn't distract me from the awesome greens and scenic vistas. There are numerous undulations, elevation changes and blind shots. It's definitely not a course for the golfer who's looking for easy pars. I've played numerous golf courses throughout the western hemisphere and as far as I'm concerned Maryland National rates among the top 50 courses I've played. I happened to find a fantastic deal on Golf Now and was able to play this course for $25.00 and change. However I'll probably play it again at the regular green fee. I liked it just that much.
TeeTimes Beware!
Love this course but 2 glaring problems on my trip today. One, was told on the phone that twliight started at 11am on a Sunday and the rate was $59 which is what their website has for twilight, so I made a tee time over the phone for 3 people. Got to the course andwas told the rate was $84. The guy behind the desk could care less and would do nothing for any help us out. Two, the group in front of us we caught on ~hole 5 was awfully slow. 3 holes ahead of them with nobody on them and the same guy at the clubhouse said that there were 'on pace' and there wasn't anything they could do. Meanwhile, we stacked up for many holes waiting. Poor customer service.
Excellent Course
This was my first time playing, and the course was excellent in most everyway. My only criticism was I booked the tee-time through Golf Now hot deal, and received a $20+/- discount. However since I received that discount, they charged an extra $10 for driving range balls that are typically free with the round. Seemed a but cheap.
Rough finishing holes
Great course all around till you get to 16. Just a stupid hole. One small spot to land a 5-6 iron, and then a very short wedge into a concrete green. 17 is a tough par 3 with very little room for error. Not horrible. Then 18 is a layup to a short to mid iron with no room anywhere. Very obvious that they ran out of room for the last three holes. The rest of the course is fairly wide open if you play the right set of tees. Great staff. Great grill room. Head pro super nice. 2 out of last 3 holes have got to go. I hate that.
Recent game
Course is in very good shape and greens are running very fast. Our 4some played in 4 hrs 10 minutes on a Friday afternoon
No room for error on the course. Sprayed shots get gobbled up quickly with woods and tall grasses everywhere
Only negative is the course charges $10 range fee for golf now customers. Seems cheap and unfriendly for them to do that.
Overall good deal at $60 but no one thought it was worth $89 to play.
Views are incredible and there are a lot of fun holes.
I made a day out of it. The practice area was complete. The carts were clean . The GPS worked perfectly. The Schroyers Tavern grill is excellent. Had lunch before and hung out and had dinner and some drinks after the round. A all around good day. (I got my moneys worth for sure)
Neat Layout -- Conditions Could Improve
I was really looking forward to playing Maryland National for the first time, as it had been labeled as one of the elite golf courses in the area. I don't know if the claim is a bit inflated, or if I just caught the course at a bad time of season. But, the conditions just weren't there for me to match the prices they charge. Several greens on the back 9 were burned out, and there was a fair amount of burned out spots through the rough. For a course that waters, I would have thought it would have looked a little better than it did. I liked the layout of the course -- definitely a challenge. I didn't have a driver in my bag for this round, and I didn't miss it one bit. This course can really punish you if you get off the fairways. On another note, the scenery is amazing, with a gorgeous backdrop of mountains all around you. To conclude, it's definitely worth a play -- I just wouldn't recommend paying full price.
Great cours
It was hot as blazes. No one showed up, almost, so I zipped around in 3 hours. Loved the course.
Nice course, hard greens
Great layout and conditions very nice. Beautiful views. Back nine is very tight and the greens are extremely hard. All in all great course, a must play
Fast greens
This course is in wonderful condition. The fairways are smooth and the greens are fast. 90 degree rule with carts was a little bothersome. The pace was good and the carts were fast to move you along.
great course but
no range to gauge pace of play. Several hoes has fairway ground under repair but still a good course to play
views and super fast greens
This is an outstanding golf facility great service leads into great golf. We drove 1 hour and 15 minutes from DC and I would do it again in rush hour. Very well keeped super fast greens, and challenging golf shots from tee to green. and a great burger to go along with it all.
Fun track
More than you would expect at most public courses. Fun layout with lots of elevation change and different looks/required shots on every hole. Greens were smooth and quick enough. Fairways were fast and fairly firm. Typical public golf course with irreplaced divots and unfixed ball marks but that is not the courses fault. Great job by the superintendent and his staff. Outside service staff was very professional. Its over an hour drive for me but its worth the effort to get out there.
Seaview Stay & Play Golf Package
I could not agree more with the layout of the course...and it's such a shame because all the other holes are terrific.
