Reputation Well Deserved
Maryland National is an truly excellent golf course. With a great layout, exceptional course conditions, a fair price, and top-notch facilities and staff, it's deserved it's well-regarded reputation.
I unfortunately arrived for my round 10 minutes before an hour-long deluge, but even with the bunkers filled with water on the first whole, the course drained quickly and rarely penalized me for being so saturated.
The layout is inviting, challenging, and very picturesque. Greens fees can be a little pricey, but you don't feel like your wasting your money when you step up to the well-kept tee boxes on walk across the firm, smooth greens. Bunkers are well maintained too.
Pace of play was good for me thanks to the weather but no one in the clubhouse waiting out the rain complained of their round length.
I highly recommend this course to anyone, it's worth a drive and the money!
Great Condition
Course is in excellent shape. Bit pricey. Can be very challenging. Day I played, the course was nearly empty.
Pristine
Highly recommend playing this course. Spectacular scenery and pristine playing conditions!
Course is in excellant shape
There may not one flat spot on the entire course. From the tee box to the greens, every part of the course was in great shape. Go to the Tavern after your round, the wings are excellent.
Maryland National
I played Maryland National on April 18, 2015 with a friend of mine. We try to make a few trips a year throughout the mid-atlantic states to see new courses and Maryland National did not disappoint.
The starter took the time to give our group as much 'local knowledge' as he could in 5 minutes. the fairways and greens are extremely well manicured. I am not exaggerating when I say that we saw at least 20 maintenance workers on the course throughout the day getting it ready for the spring.
I certainly agree with some of the other reviews on here, don't be fooled by the wide open look of the course as the course is certainly challenging. I hope to make it back to Maryland National one day, I just wish it wasn't 3 hours away.
Best course in area
Beautiful course, was in excellent condition. The staff were friendly and courteous. A definite must play for anyone.
Worth the Trip
Came out from DC to play something a little different. Coming up 270 we were delayed due to an accident (of course there would be traffic on a Saturday) but M.N. accommodated our late arrival.
Despite having recently been punched, the greens still ran relatively smooth, albeit shaggy. Relatively small greens as well.
Pace of play was excellent despite a healthy mix of doubles and foursomes mixing it up.
Typically a relatively expensive track but snagged a great hot deal off Golf Now.
Scenic Course in the Mountains
This course has all the views you could want on a course. This course plays well for golfers who like an open hole. There are only 3-4 holes with tree lines making the shot more narrow and 1 water hole. Unlike Musket Ridge this course does not have many hidden shots or drop or incline within the hole. The course condition has increased over the past few years and is the best I have played on it. This is one of the better courses in the area but not affordable to play often.
Beautiful Course
The course is beautiful in all aspects; the scenery, layout and conditioning. A wonderful diversity of hole layouts. Placement is a challenge for all shots in order to avoid hazards and to be on the best side of the pin to ensure a two-putt. Loved the course - hope to play it again.
Great design
Loved this course! A must play when in the area! #16 is one of the great risk reward holes I have played!
Great Bargain on a Great Course
When I saw a "hot deal" for Maryland National (and an empty tee sheet reflected on Golf Now), I jumped at the chance. Happy to have paid nearly 50% off the regular rate to play this Central/Western Maryland "gem". If you get the chance, go this route! Wet conditions and hot temperatures during the week meant "cart path only" and the bunkers weren't prepared as they might be for a member/guest event, but the greens were fast and the fairways and tees were in great shape. Staff was friendly. Make use of the "included" driving range (especially if you can hit off the grass [rather than the mats]) and the short game area, which pretty accurately reflects course conditions.
Mid week trip...
Course is an excellent condition and the pace of the play was excellent as well. The front desk staff was not friendly, however, other staff members were very friendly.
Great Course
I've played most course in this area as I've been visiting family here for over 20 years. It is by far the nicest layout and the best keep facility in the area. It is challenging while still forgiving. The greens run true and the fairways are receptive. If you miss in spots you are duly punished but a well placed shot is almost always rewarded. I will play here again next time we visit.
Great Course
Many of the courses in this area think they are a premium golf course but Maryland National always delivers. The course conditions are consistently the best in the area and it provides a variety of interesting and challenging shots. They have a friendly staff and I have always been treated well.
Fun time
Had a great time on Father's Day with my son. Course was in great shape tee to green. We caught up to groups ahead of us and had to wait from #6 on. They should have had someone working the course making sure slow groups eithe picked up pace or allowed faster groups through. Pro shop did not have as much of variety as others in the area.
Sweet experience
Beautiful course, very challenging layout, excellent condition, fairways are outstanding. One of the nicest courses I've played in years. Definitely a course you need to play a couple of times to know the nuances but fair even to the first time player. Lots of elevation changes. I will play here again especially if I can get another great value like I did through GN.
One of the areas best experiences
A Sunday round so a little slow, but the staff actually marshalled the course....Bravo! This is one of the areas best. No 2 holes alike, elevation changes...mix of shorter and longer holes...birdie holes and tough pars...excellent condition...great staff. I always enjoy it and recommend it.
A must play if in the area, well worth the drive
Top notch facility, from the time you pull up. Friendly staff from starter to pro shop. Immaculate course conditions. A very challenging day of golf, but the on cart gps helps out a lot. A very scenic and serene location. Definitely one of my top 5 courses in that area of Md. Make the trip up for an enjoyable round of golf, you'll be back for sure.
Greens in good shape
Really enjoyed my round at MD national. I went out as a single, and that proved to be difficult. I wish I would have been with someone who had played the course before. But managed to play a decent round, with a birdie on #11. Nice hole :) ... Greens were in good shape, and they were rolling very nice. I enjoyed the layout and look forward to my next round at MD National.
