About
Southwyck is new and improved after re-opening in the summer of 2002 with new fairways, tees, and greens. This links-style track features prominent bunkering, water in play on 14 holes, and is known for its difficult back nine.
Southwyck first opened in 1988 on the prairie lands east of downtown Houston-at the time, it was the only true links-style track in the area. Like the Scottish courses, this track is susceptible to the wind, and Kavanaugh did a nice job of confusing golfers off the tee, as it's difficult to determine exactly where you want to hit the shot. Depth perception is difficult, and local knowledge is helpful.
The course once served as the home course for the famous University of Houston golf team, and it served them well with its difficulty. Large mounding prevents level lies, and water comes into play on 13 holes. Tall native grasses line the fairway and require desperate hacks into the fairway when errant shots become buried in the heather.
No. 5 is a monster par 3 at 250 yards, but the par 3 No. 11 might be more difficult because of the long carry of a ravine down to the green 212 yards away. No. 3 might be the toughest in Houston. It rolls 467 yards into the wind with fairway bunkers lining the right side.
Getting there : From Hwy. 288 south find the Hwy. 518/Pearland exit. Turn left and look for the Silver Lake Subdivision. Take that road to the course.

Nice layout, terrible condition
Southwyck golf course has a nice layout. I enjoy the course design and the shots it requires me to hit. It’s so unfortunate that the fairways are in such terrible condition. In general the tee boxes and greens mostly are in decent condition, but the fairways are awful. It would be wonderful if somehow the course condition would be addressed…..:personally I would pay more for a round there if that was done.
The staff are always friendly and courteous.

HOT HOT HOT
Course was so dry that ground had huge cracks in it. Found three balls in fairway cracks. Made driving cart on fairway difficult and bone jarring. Some greens were very iffy.

Terrible Condition
It’s like playing on a different planet. They don’t water the fairways and with the drought, it has caused massive cracks in the fairways that are as big as 6-8 inches wide and some down to 3 deep. They removed all the sand bunkers but did not remove the drains from them so the ball just rolls down next to it. They force you to buy a hotdog if you want to buy alcohol. Greens were decent atleast. Tee boxes were in terrible condition as well. I would not recommend this course to anyone until the conditions improve which I’ll never know unless it’s free to play there. I lost 3 balls in the middle of the fairway somewhere in one of the cracks.

Stay away from this trash course!
I've played this course when it was at it's best, many years ago and probaby again just after they did away with all their sand traps on the course. Recently, I had a last minute urge to check it out again and the $30 rate was about all I was willing to pay since I haven't been playing a lot lately and wanted to simply work on my game. Even though recent reviews weren't that great, I certainly wasn't prepared for the treacherous conditions I was about to edure . The immediate red flag was when I pulled into the parking lot for a 3:30 tee-time during a holiday weekend and there couldn't have been more than a dozen cars. To start off, the tee boxes are bare and it was almost impossible to get a full sized tee in the ground. Fairways have cracks so wide, I actually lost a couple of balls in them, IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FAIRWAY. I found almost NO yardage markers throughout the course. There weren't the usual 150 yard poles and maybe only a couple of "200" yard markers in the middle of some fairways. I will say, the greens were decent but a few of them did have crab grass growing throughout. It's a crime that they are taking money and allowed to let anyone play this course with these horrible conditions. They have clearly decided to NOT put anything back into the course and I fully expect it will be closed some time in the near future. I certainly don't expect to play it ever again and will do everything possible to get the word out that this course is trash. The only way to save it would be to get new ownership who won't "steal" from their customers and try to preserve what used to be a challenging, great conditioned course. So sad and a total embarrassment, knowing how nice this course was in the early 2000's and now one of the worse courses I have ever played!

Great layout, not well maintained
Southwyck used to be a great course, not sure what happened. The course fairways are so dry that there are crack that you can lose your ball in. The greens are so slow and full of rough spots and crab grass. So sad to see such a great course not kept up.

First time playing the course
For my first time playing the course I truly enjoyed it. Really enjoyed the bunkers and hills this course has to offer. Seemed a bit confusing at first but once you start seeing the layout it’s a great course. I definitely recommend this course to anyone looking to get a good variety of different holes and elevation in.

Unplayable fairways
Fairways have not been watered in months. Hard and cracked. With little grass

Needs water, badly
Fairways had large cracks, deep, large cracks. I even lost a ball in one, in the fairway.
That being said the greens were in great shape.

Drought condiions
The conditions of the fairways reflected the severe lack of rain. Cracks on the round everywhere and driving was rough on the carts. The greens were in good shape. They will need to re-do the front nine fairways to regain the course.

Unplayable
Lost three balls in the first two holes due to 3” cracks all over the fairways!!! Should not be charging anything to play this course in this condition! Terrible!

Good layout, but needs a bit of work.
A round of golf is good, however playing w friends and meeting up w others who enjoy the game is great!
I have not played this course in well over three decades. I have to assume due to the drought, he needs work, especially the fairways.
Other than that, we had a great time playing a good course. I will be back to challenge my low score.

The fairways definitely need attention. Very dry and had huge cracks. The greens were in good shape/ condition.

Course condition
Fairways were dried up like the earth was cracking. Front 9 greens had big weeds growing on them. Course layout was good and open. Could use some maintenance
