About
Southwyck is new and improved after re-opening in the summer of 2002 with new fairways, tees, and greens. This links-style track features prominent bunkering, water in play on 14 holes, and is known for its difficult back nine.
Southwyck first opened in 1988 on the prairie lands east of downtown Houston-at the time, it was the only true links-style track in the area. Like the Scottish courses, this track is susceptible to the wind, and Kavanaugh did a nice job of confusing golfers off the tee, as it's difficult to determine exactly where you want to hit the shot. Depth perception is difficult, and local knowledge is helpful.
The course once served as the home course for the famous University of Houston golf team, and it served them well with its difficulty. Large mounding prevents level lies, and water comes into play on 13 holes. Tall native grasses line the fairway and require desperate hacks into the fairway when errant shots become buried in the heather.
No. 5 is a monster par 3 at 250 yards, but the par 3 No. 11 might be more difficult because of the long carry of a ravine down to the green 212 yards away. No. 3 might be the toughest in Houston. It rolls 467 yards into the wind with fairway bunkers lining the right side.
Getting there : From Hwy. 288 south find the Hwy. 518/Pearland exit. Turn left and look for the Silver Lake Subdivision. Take that road to the course.

Water!
Course ok. Staff very friendly. BUT WHEN ARE THEY GOING TO HAVE DRINKING WATER ON THE COURSE AGAIN?????
It's Houston, it's hot and the beverage cart girl leaves early.
Course overhaul needed
The pace of play is good. The staff is always great. The driving range is always great. There are many spots on the scores were you are hitting off of hard dirt and weeds. Some greens are good, some greens are rough. I feel like this course has gone downhill slightly. There used to be water on several of the holes on the course, but there must’ve been a decision made to drain the water. It has certainly taken away the aesthetic appeal. The value is good, but for another $25, you can play on a course that is much higher quality. I love the location and people, but this course needs some TLC.

Great Bargain
One of my favorites when its taken care of. Most greens were in good shape, about 3 of them had like pot holes in them...but great bargain, love the layout of the course.

Greens need work and pace of play is crap
For $25 for 18 with a cart you're going to get exactly what you expect for that price playing this course. Greens are very patchy and not very well taken care of on most holes. Pace of play is a joke. I literally waited 35 minutes to tee off at hole 15. That should never happen. Overall though this course isn't bad if you just want to go out and play a round just don't set your expectations too high on the shape of the course.

Low on Staffing at this course
The cart I had during my round quit running that morning after the 5th. hole. Luckily, I was on the cart path and not in the middle of the fare way. I reported the issue to the office who indicated they would get another cart to me right away. The cart was out of gasoline. This was obvious to me after raising the seat and noticing the empty transparent fuel tank. Fortunately, I was able to catch a ride from another player. I continued to play holes 6 through 9. At the clubhouse, I obtained a replacement cart and hurried to the tee box at 10 to unload my gear for a cart change over. It was then I heard a young worker call out “was I the one that needed a cart” he had in tow.

Better last time
Sorry to say but the greens were lot better last time I played. They were free of any damage to the putting area. This time many of the greens have sandy area thru out!! Greens did roll ok.
The fairways are still bumpy as always but now free of cracks. Guest the rain helped. There’s grass in the fairways but no distinction between rough.
I play just to practice but not to post a score.
Wish the course was on better shape, love the layout even without bunkers.
Hopping improvements will come!!

Solid course for the money - not USGA sloped
Solid course, fairways and greens were in good condition for the price. But there were no bunkers, and the course is not USGA rated so you can’t post any scores on your handicap or play any net games.

The fairways are horrible..cracks and all uneven and bumpy..just needs alot of TLC..

Pathetically neglected
I have played this course, dozens and dozens of times over the years. When in decent shape, it is fun and challenging experience at a reasonable green free. I don’t know what’s going on there now, but the fairways are in terrible shape. Especially the front nine which is so dry and very bumpy. I told my cart partner on the first hole. “Somebody needs to get a bulldozer out here and straighten out these fairways”. I heard they may be getting a new owner. I hope whoever does, buy it is willing to possibly even shut it down for a while and to put adequate money into this tract to restore it to the fun and enjoyable golf course it used to be!

From bad to horrible bad.
I have been playing this golf course for a while, but lately the conditions and the management of the golf course has gotten to a point where I believe I would recommend and or play it for good while. Southwyck doesn’t have a Marshall on staff to keep players moving in a timely manner and some of the people that go play believe playing 18 holes it’s a field trip, they respect etiquette of the game and of the golf course. I will go and expend my money somewhere else.

Pace of play big issue
Didn’t even get to finish 18 holes because we got so tired of waiting. There was a time on the back nine when there was 5 groups on 1 hole.. it was ridiculous. The course was in pretty good shape but that’s just inexcusable to have 5 groups on one hole.
