About
Southwyck is new and improved after re-opening in the summer of 2002 with new fairways, tees, and greens. This links-style track features prominent bunkering, water in play on 14 holes, and is known for its difficult back nine.
Southwyck first opened in 1988 on the prairie lands east of downtown Houston-at the time, it was the only true links-style track in the area. Like the Scottish courses, this track is susceptible to the wind, and Kavanaugh did a nice job of confusing golfers off the tee, as it's difficult to determine exactly where you want to hit the shot. Depth perception is difficult, and local knowledge is helpful.
The course once served as the home course for the famous University of Houston golf team, and it served them well with its difficulty. Large mounding prevents level lies, and water comes into play on 13 holes. Tall native grasses line the fairway and require desperate hacks into the fairway when errant shots become buried in the heather.
No. 5 is a monster par 3 at 250 yards, but the par 3 No. 11 might be more difficult because of the long carry of a ravine down to the green 212 yards away. No. 3 might be the toughest in Houston. It rolls 467 yards into the wind with fairway bunkers lining the right side.
Getting there : From Hwy. 288 south find the Hwy. 518/Pearland exit. Turn left and look for the Silver Lake Subdivision. Take that road to the course.

Needs water, badly
Fairways had large cracks, deep, large cracks. I even lost a ball in one, in the fairway.
That being said the greens were in great shape.
Drought condiions
The conditions of the fairways reflected the severe lack of rain. Cracks on the round everywhere and driving was rough on the carts. The greens were in good shape. They will need to re-do the front nine fairways to regain the course.

Unplayable
Lost three balls in the first two holes due to 3” cracks all over the fairways!!! Should not be charging anything to play this course in this condition! Terrible!

Good layout, but needs a bit of work.
A round of golf is good, however playing w friends and meeting up w others who enjoy the game is great!
I have not played this course in well over three decades. I have to assume due to the drought, he needs work, especially the fairways.
Other than that, we had a great time playing a good course. I will be back to challenge my low score.

The fairways definitely need attention. Very dry and had huge cracks. The greens were in good shape/ condition.
Looked like they were doing matinance on the course. Several open holes on the fairways.
This course use to be in great shape all around, hope to see it back to that soon.

Course condition
Fairways were dried up like the earth was cracking. Front 9 greens had big weeds growing on them. Course layout was good and open. Could use some maintenance

Fairways Burnt To A Crisp
The fairways are struggling to survive with the summer of 2023 heat here in Houston. The drought has left the fairways crispy and full of cracks everywhere. Fortunately the greens are nice. Also, it would be great if they provided water to drink throughout the course in this miserable heat.

GHD Review
The staff and layout are top notch. The course itself is just awful. The fairways are highly uneven and there are crater sized gaps in the ground. Unsafe as I literally placed an entire 7 iron into one of the gaps. Greens are thick grass. Sorry, bit it is not safe for me to play there. Really too bad since the location, layout and staff are top notch.

Marshall NEEDED and lots of rain.
The lack of rain has really hurt the fairways. There are gaping cracks throughout the course. The lack of a Marshall pretty much created a free for all, a foursome had the entire course backed up causing a 5 hour round. If that weren’t bad enough this group felt the need to drive the tee boxes, greens and the par 3’s. Will not be returning and do NOT recommend this course.

Worst Conditions I’ve ever played
Not sure what has gone on or is going on but this course is in TERRIBLE shape.
Entire fairways on the front nine are filled with massive cracks and crevices. I’m shocked they don’t make you sign a waiver before you tee off because you can really get hurt if you aren’t careful. Twist an ankle, knee or worse if you step wrong.
It feels like a course someone tried to turn into a hard links style course because they didn’t want to, or couldn’t afford to get water onto the course.
Just driving across the fairway is a miserable experience because of all the bumps, cracks and crevices. It’s just awful.
But if you don’t care about course conditions then maybe it’s worth the $30 late evening tee time.
We literally chose to leave after 7 holes because it was too miserable.
It’s a real shame too because the layout could be interesting and fun to play but someone needs to figure out the irrigation ASAP because you can’t just not water a golf course in Texas during the summer and expect it to be a playable course.

Conditions at Southwyck
First this was our first time playing this course. It was challenging being a link style course. However the conditions on a lot of the holes was not good. There was some muddy areas in the fairway and a oily putrid smell, My wifes ball landed in on the of these mud pits and somethiing black and smelly got on one shoe. It did stain the shoe and i did everything I could to clean it. in fact it left a mustard yellow stain on the shoe and this was only her second time wearing them. (see pictures) there was yellow caution tepe up on a couple of the holes and there were no water stations. However there is a sign in the club house stating this. The course was dry, with the weather this is somewhat understandable but you would think they would have a sprinkler system to help somewhat. The ground is very dry and cracked in fact I lost a ball in one of the crevices on a fairway. But it is a challenging links course.
I would recommend this course to a friend with some reservations and words of caution.
