About
Southwyck is new and improved after re-opening in the summer of 2002 with new fairways, tees, and greens. This links-style track features prominent bunkering, water in play on 14 holes, and is known for its difficult back nine.
Southwyck first opened in 1988 on the prairie lands east of downtown Houston-at the time, it was the only true links-style track in the area. Like the Scottish courses, this track is susceptible to the wind, and Kavanaugh did a nice job of confusing golfers off the tee, as it's difficult to determine exactly where you want to hit the shot. Depth perception is difficult, and local knowledge is helpful.
The course once served as the home course for the famous University of Houston golf team, and it served them well with its difficulty. Large mounding prevents level lies, and water comes into play on 13 holes. Tall native grasses line the fairway and require desperate hacks into the fairway when errant shots become buried in the heather.
No. 5 is a monster par 3 at 250 yards, but the par 3 No. 11 might be more difficult because of the long carry of a ravine down to the green 212 yards away. No. 3 might be the toughest in Houston. It rolls 467 yards into the wind with fairway bunkers lining the right side.
Getting there : From Hwy. 288 south find the Hwy. 518/Pearland exit. Turn left and look for the Silver Lake Subdivision. Take that road to the course.

Pathetically neglected
I have played this course, dozens and dozens of times over the years. When in decent shape, it is fun and challenging experience at a reasonable green free. I don’t know what’s going on there now, but the fairways are in terrible shape. Especially the front nine which is so dry and very bumpy. I told my cart partner on the first hole. “Somebody needs to get a bulldozer out here and straighten out these fairways”. I heard they may be getting a new owner. I hope whoever does, buy it is willing to possibly even shut it down for a while and to put adequate money into this tract to restore it to the fun and enjoyable golf course it used to be!
From bad to horrible bad.
I have been playing this golf course for a while, but lately the conditions and the management of the golf course has gotten to a point where I believe I would recommend and or play it for good while. Southwyck doesn’t have a Marshall on staff to keep players moving in a timely manner and some of the people that go play believe playing 18 holes it’s a field trip, they respect etiquette of the game and of the golf course. I will go and expend my money somewhere else.

Pace of play big issue
Didn’t even get to finish 18 holes because we got so tired of waiting. There was a time on the back nine when there was 5 groups on 1 hole.. it was ridiculous. The course was in pretty good shape but that’s just inexcusable to have 5 groups on one hole.

Soggy but playable
After 3-4 inches of rain the night before, it was doubtful the course would be playable for my 7am tee time. Much to my surprise, it was soggy but playable. Unfortunately, but expectedly, it was cart path only.

Course Conditions
The course needs a little TLC. There were a enormous amounts of ant mounds throughout the course. The ground was very bumpy. Water sprinkler was on when we approached the green. Staff was very nice. Left my rangefinder on cart. Called two days later and staff turned it in at the front desk. Overall I would play the course again. Just needs a little TLC

Bad service
This course needs some tlc
No water to drink anywhere. No ballwashers.No Marshalls to make people keep up.Very frustrating because it has some quality holes.New owners have done little to improve it.

Better than expected
Reviews are harsh for this track. For the price it’s a better value than timber creek and on par with Pearland and other similar courses.
Greens are fast, but consistent. Fairways are mostly good, with some cracks and dead spots, no worse that other area courses.
I stayed away for a while due to last bad reviews, will play here often as it’s close to home and the price is right, especially during the week.

Needs work
I’ve always enjoyed playing the layout there. But the greens are in really bad shape. Prob won’t come come back till spring
