About
Southwyck is new and improved after re-opening in the summer of 2002 with new fairways, tees, and greens. This links-style track features prominent bunkering, water in play on 14 holes, and is known for its difficult back nine.
Southwyck first opened in 1988 on the prairie lands east of downtown Houston-at the time, it was the only true links-style track in the area. Like the Scottish courses, this track is susceptible to the wind, and Kavanaugh did a nice job of confusing golfers off the tee, as it's difficult to determine exactly where you want to hit the shot. Depth perception is difficult, and local knowledge is helpful.
The course once served as the home course for the famous University of Houston golf team, and it served them well with its difficulty. Large mounding prevents level lies, and water comes into play on 13 holes. Tall native grasses line the fairway and require desperate hacks into the fairway when errant shots become buried in the heather.
No. 5 is a monster par 3 at 250 yards, but the par 3 No. 11 might be more difficult because of the long carry of a ravine down to the green 212 yards away. No. 3 might be the toughest in Houston. It rolls 467 yards into the wind with fairway bunkers lining the right side.
Getting there : From Hwy. 288 south find the Hwy. 518/Pearland exit. Turn left and look for the Silver Lake Subdivision. Take that road to the course.

Good course but can be improve
I have played this course since 2008, the latest modification to the course most of the bunkers were removed, although this is convenient for some players and make the course easier and faster to play it also removed the charming of the course. Perhaps adding back few bunkers (not as many as years ago) will bring back the appealing of the course. Tee, fairways and green conditions are above average.
Back in good shape
After several years they have stopped their downward spiral. Greens are back to decent shape. Removing all the traps I’m sure helped save them some cash. Pace of play is still terrible. Marshall’s are pretty much nonexistent. They are there but don’t do much. The cart girls are friendly and do a good job of covering the course. But the food inside has gone down hill a little. The personnel running the grill doesn’t really have it together. Played on a Saturday and went in for some dogs and beers at the turn. They did not have any hotdogs ready so we waited. They were still cold on the inside. How do you not have a stack of dogs ready to go on a Saturday? Lots of new golfers and hacks so be prepared for a 5.5 hour round on the weekend. Good course for the price.

Nice layout priced well
Although they’ve removed all the sand bunkers, this course has a nice layout with plenty of challenges. Course condition was OK, but could be better. That said, it was good enough and priced quite fairly!!

great value on a fun track
Southwyck is really an underrated golf course, great layout that tests all your golfing skills. Greens overall rolled well, few greens little patchy but nothing too bad.

Good condition
Conditions have improved over the last three months but could be better.
Work around the greens could improve putting area..and adding back a few bunkers would be nice and would make the course more interesting.

Potential to be great
With a little investment in the greens both speed and condition, and some better fairway and rough maintenance, this course has potential to be very good. The layout, undulations, and open layout are great.

19th hole
We use to get 2 beers on Tuesday. I think that practice should still be implemented.

Staff is friendly. Price is fair. There are several greens that still have some dead spots from the freeze. Others have crab grass on them, and you can watch your ball careen off of them when you putt. Love the overall design of the course. Just wish they would clean up the greens a little bit more. Bunkers replaced with grass, which adds its own challenges.
