About
Southwyck is new and improved after re-opening in the summer of 2002 with new fairways, tees, and greens. This links-style track features prominent bunkering, water in play on 14 holes, and is known for its difficult back nine.
Southwyck first opened in 1988 on the prairie lands east of downtown Houston-at the time, it was the only true links-style track in the area. Like the Scottish courses, this track is susceptible to the wind, and Kavanaugh did a nice job of confusing golfers off the tee, as it's difficult to determine exactly where you want to hit the shot. Depth perception is difficult, and local knowledge is helpful.
The course once served as the home course for the famous University of Houston golf team, and it served them well with its difficulty. Large mounding prevents level lies, and water comes into play on 13 holes. Tall native grasses line the fairway and require desperate hacks into the fairway when errant shots become buried in the heather.
No. 5 is a monster par 3 at 250 yards, but the par 3 No. 11 might be more difficult because of the long carry of a ravine down to the green 212 yards away. No. 3 might be the toughest in Houston. It rolls 467 yards into the wind with fairway bunkers lining the right side.
Getting there : From Hwy. 288 south find the Hwy. 518/Pearland exit. Turn left and look for the Silver Lake Subdivision. Take that road to the course.

Saturday slow mo
Course was in ok shape. Off the fairway was just weeds.
Greens were okay. Saw some left over aeration, but rolled pretty smooth. Played really slow, about 5 1/4 hours for 18.

Pace of play is SLOWWW
There was no marshal to regulate play. Part of the blame has to go to the course as well. I think they schedule groups to close together. Profits trump players enjoyment

Good for the money
I’ve seen Southwyck at its best and at its worst. First of all, there are no more bunkers. They have filled them all in. A little strange but there is still plenty water and OB on every hole due to the houses. Tee boxes decent, fairways ok, but the greens are no joke. They are exceptional for the price. Staff is great.

Great shape, but slow pace
I have played Southwyck numerous times over the years and the course is in great shape after all the rain in May/June 2021.
My issue has been that I have had some +5 hour rounds and this has been on a Friday morning tee usually. The pace of play is very slow typically and usually expect a 4.5 hour round, but over 5.5 is just way to long.
The lack of marshals on the course makes it difficult for the course to keep pace of play leading to longer rounds. Of course more Marshalls means more cost per round, but when your teeing off ~7 min a dollar more would fix this issue.

Bad lies
Southwyck has some interesting golf shots due to the unique layout, but there are a lot of bad lies from the lumpy fairway turf. You will also find yourself in the rough after good tee shots if you don't know the course.
The staff is friendly enough. There is plenty of water in play, but none to drink on the course. Make sure you bring extra hydration or stock up before you tee off on a hot day.

This course has not gotten better ..
All I heard was that Southwyck was back, so I gave it a try after a year ... was I wrong. First off we were told upon checking in for a 12:45 TT that we had to be thru by 5pm?? Then, there was no beverage/food service offered, both in Grill or by beverage cart .. really?? The condition of course is average ...

Greens are choppy
I realize that the area has had plenty of rain, but I play at other Pearland area courses close by and don’t see these course conditions. I live in Southwyck area and have played dozens of rounds over 20 yrs., so I’m very disappointed in playing today .... I’m just glad I brought a bottled water!!

Southwicking the Shirt
Seems that everytime I want to play Southwyck it rains. First 4 holes it was raining steadily. Surprisingly, the course has no thunder warnings-it"s play at your own risk..Thunder was far enough away so I played. Southwyck has a very challenging layout. It is situated within a housing development so a number of the fairways are narrow. In addition, it has some hills, so at least for several holes, it plays like a Links course. Some of the fairways on the front nine were not cut so it was difficult to hit good iron shots-better for woods. Back nine was better. Overall, the fairways were in very good shape. So too were the greens, althoigh several had burned areas. Given the course conditions the green fee was a little high. It plays like a $30-$32 course rather than a $35 that I payed. If you like narrow fairways with a challenging layout this a good course for you.

Great Greens
Southwyck's greens are in great shape. Excellent value for the money. It does play pretty slow and they have filled in all the bunkers. This took a lot of shot planning out of the game and because of the pace of play you have a lot of time to not plan a shot. Just grip it and fire type course.

good day
The course was in decent shape. The greens had been sanded on the front nine but putted good. The only negative actually was a fivesome who were apparently playing for money and were overly slow and would not allow anyone to play through. Common courtesy says let faster players play through/.
