About
Southwyck is new and improved after re-opening in the summer of 2002 with new fairways, tees, and greens. This links-style track features prominent bunkering, water in play on 14 holes, and is known for its difficult back nine.
Southwyck first opened in 1988 on the prairie lands east of downtown Houston-at the time, it was the only true links-style track in the area. Like the Scottish courses, this track is susceptible to the wind, and Kavanaugh did a nice job of confusing golfers off the tee, as it's difficult to determine exactly where you want to hit the shot. Depth perception is difficult, and local knowledge is helpful.
The course once served as the home course for the famous University of Houston golf team, and it served them well with its difficulty. Large mounding prevents level lies, and water comes into play on 13 holes. Tall native grasses line the fairway and require desperate hacks into the fairway when errant shots become buried in the heather.
No. 5 is a monster par 3 at 250 yards, but the par 3 No. 11 might be more difficult because of the long carry of a ravine down to the green 212 yards away. No. 3 might be the toughest in Houston. It rolls 467 yards into the wind with fairway bunkers lining the right side.
Getting there : From Hwy. 288 south find the Hwy. 518/Pearland exit. Turn left and look for the Silver Lake Subdivision. Take that road to the course.

Disappointed round
Disappointed in our round last Saturday. Pace of play was 5 hour round. With a heat index of 105, marshal's should be moving people along. Also, No water on the course. Other courses have water coolers on every other hole. Not 1 cooler. Beverage cart came around once. Course is ok, needs some manicuring. Doubt I'll be back to Southwyck for awhile.

Good shape, poor pace
Pace of play for out Friday round was 5 hours. We had a fivesome in front of us that wouldn't let people through. Their are no marshals to push pace of play. Once again they need a marshall to keep things moving and stop letting fivesomes play on Fri-Sat.
We apologize for the pace of play issue you experienced. We always try to keep a great pace when having our golfers on the course. Post sand course in excellent shape.
Interesting links like layout. Despite all sand traps now replaced with grass, the design has not lost its interest or challenges.

Where did this course go
Been playing this course for years. Getting less appealing each time . I love the layout , but with the removal of all the sand and the rough being unkempt I was very disappointed this time.

First Time
Course was in average shape for dead of Summer. Front 9 greens and fairways needed work. Back 9 greens and fairways better. All greens small and hard to hold. I will try it again in the fall.

Great layout. Terrible care
First time plying this course. Enjoyed the layout. Lots of water but ability to score well is there. They need to desperately spray for weeds. Some TLC on the course is definitely needed. Grounds crew mowed the greens to nothing. Wasn't a blade of grass on the greens. Like putting on a pool table. Still had a good time.

Always friendly staff
Course is in good shape. Hopefully August won't be too hard on it. Greens were good..little better on the back 9. Pave of play ok for a Saturday. 4.5 hrs. expected.

Great Fun in the Summer Time at Southwyck
My golf buddy and I had a fantastic time playing at Southwyck golf course. It is by far one my favorite golf course to play at. The layout of the course is magnificent!!! I tend to play my best here. On a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the highest. I rank Southwyck as a 10!!!

It was a hot Monday
I was just in time on my late afternoon tee time to play freshly mown fairways that were firm and fast after a couple of hot dry days. I was fortunate to score some additional ice from the friendly staff 10 minutes after five, so that I could get through the last nine. On a side note, the best part of playing Southwyck is the people there.

The course is in a lot better shape than it was several months ago. The greens are a lot better. Fairways are growing in but still have a few hard pans throughout the course.
