About
Southwyck is new and improved after re-opening in the summer of 2002 with new fairways, tees, and greens. This links-style track features prominent bunkering, water in play on 14 holes, and is known for its difficult back nine.
Southwyck first opened in 1988 on the prairie lands east of downtown Houston-at the time, it was the only true links-style track in the area. Like the Scottish courses, this track is susceptible to the wind, and Kavanaugh did a nice job of confusing golfers off the tee, as it's difficult to determine exactly where you want to hit the shot. Depth perception is difficult, and local knowledge is helpful.
The course once served as the home course for the famous University of Houston golf team, and it served them well with its difficulty. Large mounding prevents level lies, and water comes into play on 13 holes. Tall native grasses line the fairway and require desperate hacks into the fairway when errant shots become buried in the heather.
No. 5 is a monster par 3 at 250 yards, but the par 3 No. 11 might be more difficult because of the long carry of a ravine down to the green 212 yards away. No. 3 might be the toughest in Houston. It rolls 467 yards into the wind with fairway bunkers lining the right side.
Getting there : From Hwy. 288 south find the Hwy. 518/Pearland exit. Turn left and look for the Silver Lake Subdivision. Take that road to the course.

Good Course for the Money
Played the course a few weeks after the freeze, the fairways and rough aren’t in bad shape, it’s just all dead grass. The greens were still good though. Course is fun and staff is very friendly.

Let me book & pay - but course was closed
I booked this Sunday Tee time on a Friday.... there were also times available for Saturday, and almost all of Sunday was booked. Paid $86... as we pulled up at 7:45 am Sunday, the entire parking lot was empty. No one answered the phone. Finally we got ahold of someone who wasn’t even part of southwyck, he couldn’t get ahold of anyone either and said that it looked like they’d been closed Saturday too. Idk if this is Golfnow or the courses responsibility, but I should’ve been notified and refunded before Sunday morning. I still haven’t gotten a refund, instead I’m getting surveys about how the course was.

Hi,
My partner and I, were a bit disappointed as no coffee was available in the morning nor food and beverage, even at 11 am...Restaurant seemed to be close.
Moreover, I was surprised not have a hello or thank you when I paid the greenfees...
Except those points, we had a good time..

Bring sand bunkers back
Do the right thing and bring the sand bunkers back. The sodded-over tall grass is ridiculous, especially as "free drop" ... at LEAST call them grass bunker hazards or something. Southwyck has the potential to be a truly GREAT course, but it's slowly degenerating into a poor course. I know, because I've watched it decline over maybe 15 rounds over the course of a few years. Charge more $ if you need to.
Plus, get some active marshalls enforcing pace-of-play on the back 9. The typical backup on holes 12-16 could be alleviated by making sure players realize they are NOT Tiger Woods. I.e., they're not going to reach #12 or #14 in two, and they're not going to drive the green on #15. And barely anyone hits #13 green in two... it's too long.
Good work though on the process of getting the crabgrass patches off the green. I realize it's a tough work in progress.

The staff are very friendly and competent. Membership is very affordable. The range balls are excellent. The pace of play is somewhat slow but this should be expected in a golf course where a lot of golfers play.

Worse than a muni
So disappointing.. what used to be one of the nicer courses in the area is now a complete dump :( bunkers are filled in with patches of grass.. wanna drive the cart on the fairway? Impossible. Huge bumps and potholes through every single fairway. Greens surprisingly in good shape but that’s about it. Spend $20 extra and go to golf club of Houston..

Has gotten a lot better
The greens were way better than last few times I was there. Course in good shape. Crowds scared away by weather today, played it in 2 hours 45 minutes. Awesome.

Great layout, but greens need a lot of care
The course is a great value option with a fun layout that makes you think without making you feel beat up after 18. Course is in decent shape, but the greens aren’t in good shape at all. Very rarely get that smooth end over end roll that every golfer loves. Also, a shame to see all the bunkers replaced with new sod. Hopefully, that’ll help them direct more money to the greens.
