About
Southwyck is new and improved after re-opening in the summer of 2002 with new fairways, tees, and greens. This links-style track features prominent bunkering, water in play on 14 holes, and is known for its difficult back nine.
Southwyck first opened in 1988 on the prairie lands east of downtown Houston-at the time, it was the only true links-style track in the area. Like the Scottish courses, this track is susceptible to the wind, and Kavanaugh did a nice job of confusing golfers off the tee, as it's difficult to determine exactly where you want to hit the shot. Depth perception is difficult, and local knowledge is helpful.
The course once served as the home course for the famous University of Houston golf team, and it served them well with its difficulty. Large mounding prevents level lies, and water comes into play on 13 holes. Tall native grasses line the fairway and require desperate hacks into the fairway when errant shots become buried in the heather.
No. 5 is a monster par 3 at 250 yards, but the par 3 No. 11 might be more difficult because of the long carry of a ravine down to the green 212 yards away. No. 3 might be the toughest in Houston. It rolls 467 yards into the wind with fairway bunkers lining the right side.
Getting there : From Hwy. 288 south find the Hwy. 518/Pearland exit. Turn left and look for the Silver Lake Subdivision. Take that road to the course.

Southwyck is still Southwyck
We need rain. That would do a lot for the course. The poa in the greens is disruptive, but not as bad as some courses. Filling the traps with grass is an improvement. The rotted bulkheads are disturbing. If the greens get back where they were a few years ago and the fairways fill in, this will be a great price performer. Get the grill open and a beverage cart.

Good Value, Needs Improvement
I played with a local nephew and had a nice time. Course is fun but challenging for a hacker (typically hit in the 90s).
Not sure if it's COVID related but amenities could be better. We had bev cart coming around but very few yardage markers in the fairway, sand traps are grassed in (making it easier for us tho!), no bathroom on course, some tees had only one maker v. normal 2, and could use daily tee yardage as tee markers change.
So fun, inexpensive but so you are getting what you might expect.
I thought I was pretty clear in my review - more yardage markers, grass in bunkers needs to grow, etc. A 5, to me, is going to be super nice and expensive - Pebble Beach, Augusta, a TPC Course, etc. You are not shooting for that, which is fine. Its a nice, average, course that I recommend playing. The course is not in prime shape and was worn. I saw only one yardage marker on a sprinkler head )none of our four had a rangefinder).

Hard to beat the price
I play over 50 rounds of golf a year some in different states, including this one. This course fit the bill at $20 cart included. (Golf Now hot deal) The length was adequate, as we played from the top. The speed of play was normal (4hrs) for a municipal course. I had minimal interaction with staff, but the one I did was pleasant and helpful. They have a driving range but it was closed as Our T-Time was early and it was foggy. The fairways were the rolling meadow type and the greens were well kept., rolled slow with a few stray vegetation patches here and there but doable. There are No Ooh and Aw scenic picture moments on the course. Dress code was casual. I have played better courses and definitely played worse. I would play this course again if the situation presented itself. I shot better than my handicap.

Southwyck is firmly in my rotation
You can’t beat this course for best value on a Friday. Greens are small and require precision on approach shots. Layout is as a links course devoid of trees and open to wind with firm fairways. Traps have been sodded over. Greens were bumpy with transitioning warm season grass. Staff is very friendly and welcoming including the beverage cart young ladies. I had fun playing with two fellow seniors who brought out my best. It’s a 45 minute drive for me and we’ll worth the trip.

Greens & Bunkers
Lack of sand bunkers certainly changes difficulty of course...easier...greens have a lot of weird growth on them...making putting more

Layout
The layout is perfect. It needs some work around the greens and fairways but you can beat the price!

A bit rough around the edges
This course has seen better days, but the recent extreme cold may be a factor in this. I'll probably be back in a month or so and hopefully it will be looking better.
On a side note, they apparently filled in all of the sand bunkers on the course (within the past year?) which is odd and a little disappointing to me. I'm curious to know what the rationale was for this.
