Nigel
Lovely course, it's a shame the layout has changed from last year. There's a bit of a bike between the 12th and 13th, Could do with 1 or 2 more par 5's. That being said, excellent value for money, I hope the prices don't go up and drive people away. I will definitely be coming back if the prices stay as they are. Hotel looks lush too. Loved it.
Layout recently changed
They’ve recently sold some land for houses and had to change the layout of the course, generally they’ve achieved this by splitting par 5’s into a 4 and 3. Unfortunately both par 3’s that have been created are poor holes. All of the new holes also have yet to bed in, the greens are basically new turf that has been laid which means they’re long, furry and slow, and the tee boxes have no paths around them so you’re walking through knee high rough to get to them. There’s also no distance markers anywhere on the course so you have no idea what distance you’re hitting into the greens, especially since the layout means what any GPS is now utterly useless. There’s a lack of clear signs for which hole you’re on, so be careful not to start on the 12th!
It’s a shame because some of the holes that they haven’t messed around with are still really nice holes but the remodel has ruined it.
Course Not Ready
The new 18 hole layout only opened on 01/05/26 but it clearly isn't ready to play on.
The course didn't look like it had been cut for sometime and at times it was hard to distinguish between what was fairway and what was rough. It was hard to find your ball on some fairways until you were on top of it..
We were told the greens were not in the best of condition, because a new irrigation system had been put in, hence the reduced rate but they were worse than expected.
There were no course maps, no yardage markers, GPS was unavailable as it was a new layout, so it was impossible to get an accurate yardage unless you have a laser rangefinder, which we don't.
The course may be nice in a month's time when all of these problems have been ironed out but for now it should not be open and even a reduced price is not worth it.
On top of this, play was very slow, we walked in after 14 holes, as that had taken nearly 4 hours. But that could be due to the 4 balls in front having difficulty finding their balls on the uncut fairways and rough.
Abit of a mess
Poor greens & rest of course just in a mess. There's crap (sorry but it's the only way I can describe it) at the back of greens, dirt tracks for a trolley path, sand in some bunkers none in others, oh and a nice 5 minute walk I think it's after the 12th to the 13th because they've sold the land off that used to be the 2nd and 3rd. Talk about ruining a course all for money and a few new houses, like there isn't enough new houses going up already. Instead of investing and enhancing the course in my opinion it's ruined even if they manage to clean the course up.
Much improved!
I’ve played a few rounds here and it has always been a slog. Today was much different! Course is back open as 18 holes. The new layout is much more appealing and they’ve done a good job with the new holes. Rough is still long and a bit of a challenge and greens do still have some cracks but this will no doubt be improved over the coming weeks. Great value for money at £25!
The greens are terrible. In my opinion this course shouldn't be open
I have played the abbey a few times and always thought it was a decent course. Having not played it for a while I thought we'd give it another go. Not only was it 2 loops of the back 9, but the condition of the greens were terrible. Huge cracks all over most greens with super dry patches making reading putts virtually pointless. The tee boxes were in poor condition, as well as the 12th which was a par 5 cut down to a 3. In my opinion this course shouldn't be open with the construction work going on as well as poor maintenance.
Poor signage terrible greens
Poor course condition
No communication or guidance as to where facilities were
No signage for next holes it was pure guesswork walking around aimlessly no diagram on scorecard
All the greens were literally falling apart ref picitures wouldn’t play here again
Not good
Half course sold. Only back 9 available. Greens were not good at all. Bumpy and patchy. Lucky to find ball in semi rough. Bunkers only 1/2” sand rest is rock hard set. Pot luck how they play. Then if you use VPAR or similar holes won’t match up as they’ve jumbled it all up. A mess from start to finish. Won’t be back there this summer.
Beyond bad
The Abbey has posted a lot about their new course, but if the current 9 holes are not looked after how do they expect to run a good 18 hole course.
The greens were bone dry, cracking in most places with large areas where there was no grass, on a gree, it looked like the sprinklers had not seen the millenium. No clear markings on where to go, no clear markings on where the hole went, it was guesswork trying to figure out where to go.
The fairway was cut to first cut and the first cut was like the rough at Oakmont.
Avoid, avoid, avoid.
Oh dear
Course was set in a nice countryside location , good road network to get you there, plenty of parking friendly staff, now the poor stuff 1st hole straight forward, then walk thru housing estate to the 2nd hole not too bad, third hole was unbelievable was like a treasure hunt without the clues, took me a full 5 mins to find using every compass point possible until i met a fellow golfer who knew where it was, the holes had been changed around so my gps watch was sending me all over the place and as the scorecard did not show any diagrams i had no clue which directions the green was when teeing off, just a matter of aiming a certain direction and hoping you were going the correct way, the greens had also been aeorated so holes all over them and the machines doing this had ripped parts of the greens up in places, i booked 18 holes and was more than happy to finish after the first 9 which i thing the back 9 would have more or less duplicated the front 9 anyway, honestly i would not play again even if it was free.
SNOW JOKE
Unfortunately was unable to use my tee time as the course was closed due to weather conditions happy new year
TERRIBLE
The course is unplayable and should not have been opened today.
As a visitor I had no idea of what any of the holes looked like as there was no information on the holes or even wjere the next tee was.
The building work mixed with the weather has destroyed any pathways.
Overall a huge disappointment.
Good little course even with maintenance works
Decent course even with current 9 hole maintenance. Bit leafy and the queues stack up on early morning round but worth the money
Avoid
We used to love playing this course. Having sold holes 2&3 to builders for houses, you are forced to play the back 9. And some holes are shortened, which further detracts from the experience.
The condition of the back nine holes are awful. Patchy greens with some looking like a digger has driven over them.
The green fees are not worth it, £10 would’ve just about been the right amount to charge.
We might revisit the course in 2027 after the works, even if it will be shorter and punctuated with more par 3s.
Front 9 closed and greens worst ever seen
Turned up at 6 o’clock in the morning to find the front nine closed and the greens look like they’d been hit by a bomb, tee boxes didn’t have a single bit of grass
Awful conditions would not return or recommend
SHOCKING
