Was a member came back to play in June 2024, it has improved a lot , the greens were very fast and in great condition, the out of bounds on the 13th & 14th are not close enough to the woods, but all in all very good course to play,
Pleasant surprised
Tried Abbey Hôtel for the first time and enjoyed the course, good layout, interesting holes, well placed ponds and bunkers. Plenty of trouble either side of the fairway and when you find the greens they are consistant and good paced. Lost a few holes but looking forward to playing it again, with local knowledge I should save a few shots. Great course overall
Course condition
Have played this course a few times in the past, I must say that the overall condition of the golf course appears to have deteriorated quite considerably. The rough was very long, the tees were in poor condition, some of the bunkers had weeds growing out of them, the greens were very slow. I didn’t see a single ground keeper whilst out on the course. Spoke to some players from a golf society who all thought the course was “pants”. One of them said “typical hotel course, no attention to detail “.
Desperately needs mowing
Greens are good pretty fast, directions where to go are pretty miminal, hole information at T is non existent, and the fairways, well what can I say, green keeper is on a permanent holiday I think, they need to invest in some mowers, plus most expensive buggy I've ever had,
Very slow pace weekends, two 4 balls playing altogether is taking the p__s.
Over growing not maintained,
Had big expectations from the reviews I read but on the day vey disappointing. Course not maintained over grown poor layout easy lose your way.. will not be playing here again.
Poor poor Course Conditions
We were warned before we set out for our round that the fairways were in the process of being cut so as I imagine that already had us worried first four holes conditions were okay then came the patchy overgrown fairways were u would lose balls from a middle fairway shot and don’t get me started on the rough just of the fairways the first cut was 4-5 inches long and rough longer. Course layout was okay with some pretty holes but needs better care
Poor condition
We understood it would be boggy in places and were prepared for it.
The course looked tired and unkempt. Greens were shocking with bits of mud on all of them
Couldn’t tell the difference between fairways and rough. Loosing balls in the middle of the fairway was very frustrating due to long grass
Course looked tired and not maintained
Very slow pace of play
The course was in good condition for the time of year, I had heard it is pretty wet but I found it to be fine. The bunkers were very low on sand. the course is long, fairways and greens were good. The big problem is the pace of play, we teed off before 9 and were stuck behind very slow groups, at times you could see 5 groups all queuing along the holes after 4hours 30 we walked off having just finished the 13th hole and looking like the round was going to take over 6 hours. I did play a Saturday so maybe a comp was holding things up. Give the course a try but get out first or pick a weekday.
An interested but wet course!
I'd played the Abbey a couple of times before years ago and remember there being some interesting holes. There are some really testing holes, but this time it really was very wet with all the rain we've had, so it was playing naturally much longer. Greens were fair but balls were often plugging in and around the fairways which made it a real challenge trying to find your ball. I lost loads! I'd give it another go, but not in the Autumn/winter time,
Pace of play…
Good value due to a deal.
Only problem was the pace of play. It took 5hrs 10 mins!
Decent
The Abbey is a good course but only problem is any bit of rain sits as its a flat course, i do think also the price should reflect that because i paid in the summer less and had perfect conditions and this time it was a very marshy and we hadnt had much rain prior. Still love the course and staff are bang on
Nice enough but painfully slow
The welcome in pro shop was friendly and the practice facilities good. The course was in good condition the greens were very hard and more links like than parkland but once you knew that they did role true. My main reason for low rating was the 4min spacing of the tee times - this meant it was congested (even at 8:30) and pace was painfully slow so much so that I didn’t bother to play after 8 holes as I was looking at 5:30+ hours. A shame as everything else was good
Great course but pace of play needs to be sorted out badly!
Played today, really nice tricky course, immaculate greens, fairways in good condition but the pace of play is a joke never teed off over 10 minutes late before through slow play and it never got any faster through the holes gave up after 9 holes.
A quality challenging golf course.
I used to play here often around 20 years ago and I really enjoyed playing here again and will make sure I return more regularly from now on. The greens ran really true which made the round really enjoyable and I had a good match against my golfing buddy. Fairways are pretty generous but if you stray off there is some brutal foot high rough waiting for you. Although this is cut short under some groups of trees. A really diverse range of holes and some longer ones to suit longer hitters. Some challenging par3 holes too. Can highly recommend.
Thank you for your feedback! We’re glad to hear you found our course tricky and enjoyed the immaculate greens and fairways in good condition.
We’re sorry to hear you didn’t complete your round, but at least the great value £18.50 twilight green fee (charged at 2.12pm in June!) which is reflective of the time of day and amount of golfers booked ahead - still offered great value for even 9 holes!
We also want to note that if you had popped into the shop or contacted us directly, we would have happily offered you a return visit credit.
We appreciate that on very busy days, things can slow down a bit, and we hope you’ll consider giving us another shot perhaps on a quieter day.
