Is Avisford Park more CHALLENGING than Moderately difficult?
I try to visit Avisford Park at least once a year, but is that not frequent enough to consider all the challenges this course offers? It's a parkland course situated on some downland hills and many fairways are tree-lined. You must allow for many downland, challenging contours on tee shots, particularly on the back nine; some tricky ball runs here. Not helped by the speed of the fairways in the very dry ground conditions (though I will admit to getting some extra yardage!) Then I must have strayed from the absolute centre of the fairway - I found far too many tree crowns, heavily in leaf, that did not welcome any shot that I was able to give a bit of height to. These are not criticisms of the course, just observations about how much you need to focus on the challenges AP can offer. The two nines are so different that it is a real test, but you have to feel challenged, and have some successes also, in order to enjoy a good round.
My one main concern are the issues around course management on holes 1,2 &13. I'll wait to see what happens here but I do hope to be back! Keep up with all that the team are doing.
Thank you also to Alex? (barman), who made my wife feel comfortable and welcomed in the clubhouse during the afternoon.
Chris.
A tale of two halves
Nice welcome on arrival - checked in at the side window to the bar.
Practice putting green and a couple of nets to warm up.
Course was very dry, patched in places due to the very hot and dry weather this summer. Greens were generally rolling well, if a little slow. Personally I like the small pot style bunkers but some were a bit scruffy.
Front nine is a flat, mature parkland style. Lots of trees and quite tight in places. Back nine is accessed across a busyish road - much more a downland style with sloping fairways .
Back nine was quite tricky in the very dry conditions, I expect it plays better spring/autumn with softer fairways.
We enjoyed our day, even if scoring was not great!
Fabulous course
The course is in excellent condition. As a visitor, I was impressed, but the layout could be a bit confusing if you are playing on your own.
Avisford park bargain
Avisford Park is a great value course. Front 9 is build from the gardens, it’s tight and flat with pretty holes. Back 9 is very different landscape, undulating and quite hilly, with picturesque holes and a signature par 3 over a ravine. I paid £17 on a hot deal. Well worth it.
Good round of afternoon Golf
Having not played here for a few years, we thought it was time for a return trip. The 1st and 2nd holes have been moved since our last visit, and we're not in the best condition, we did wonder if this would be reflective of the whole course, but safe to say it wasn't. Once we reached the 3rd, the course returned to what we had known in the past. The 1st 9 a very flat park course, but the back 9 within the valley has a couple of testing holes. Not many people playing on a Sunday lunch time, so at time it felt like we had the whole course to ourselves. We will return.
Lovely afternoon of golf
I was unfortunately behind a wedding party and a couple of 4 balls , so jumped a few holes and played with another single ,
Had a great afternoon of golf , greens were fast , I even played the back 9 for the first time in a few years and thoroughly enjoyed it
Thank you a avisford park for a nice afternoon of golf , as always I enjoyed and will definitely return
Enjoyable afternoon. Tees need watering.
Enjoyable afternoon. Tees rock hard but otherwise good.
Looks prettier than it plays
I haven’t played here for a couple of years and was disappointed with the greens and also having to play around half of the holes off temporary tees (we were not informed of this before playing).
I know it’s March so shouldn’t expect too much, but the other courses I have played nearby recently such as Bognor and Goodwood were in much better condition
Saturday golf
As normal, the course was in great shape, staff at the bar are always very welcoming, we had a great time and will be back for more golf, keep up the good work
Great course
We had a great round, the course was in great condition considering the weather we have had lately so a big shout out to the ground staff, the gentleman who booked us in is always friendly and helpful, we will be back during the summer if not before, keep up the good work 😀
Not great condition
Badly cut fairways, odd layout (including having to walk down a road to the back nine), lack of signposts (so you frequently didn't know where the next hole was, no hole numbers on tees of flags.
Terrible Greens and bunkers
I appreciate that the lack of rain is a big issue for golf courses but the greens and bunkers were in a terrible condition.
The greens were so bumpy and patchy, we gave up in the end.
Some of the sand in the bunkers appeared to be ballast with medium size pebbles in them.
Not impressed.
Avisford Park
Nice local course, but only on a discount rate. Greens and tee boxes desperately need water.
Course is a bit scruffy but quite pretty. Good value at £20 but wouldn’t pay full price for morning rounds in its current condition.
Needs lots of TLC
Yes it was maintaince week so greens had been punched
Yes it’s been dry so fairways were like straw
BUT the course was looking tired and needs attention, some really nice holes especially the back 9.
Great course with lovely tests.
Lovely course and greens in great condition. Facilities for a snack lacking and not publicised that you have to head for the hotel.
