Beautiful cliff top course
Played a two ball on a damp, grey, misty and windy afternoon, but really enjoyed the round. Course very quiet and in great condition with some beautiful holes overlooking the coast. Very hilly, with buggies available, although we didn't use. Bar was closed on return which was a shame for 4pm. Overall, a lovely course and will play again.
Early bird
Very nice course challenging in places
From 16 onwards greens well hidden
Stunning!
Great staff and very welcoming, proper nice members, beautiful course and stunning views! I will be back!
Always a friendly welcome here. The course is challenging with small greens and difficult slopes and gradients. The greens were the best I’ve probably seen them before running true. Lovely day, spectacular views, very enjoyable
Not for the fainthearted
If you are young and fit ignore all this ! There are a few hints as to what you are about face as you drive up the steep narrow drive into the sloping car park. You then have a steep walk past the clubhouse to the first tee which for the man is up a stepped path. Halfway along the first fairway to the right is the 17th green. Up the steep slope behind that is the par 3 18th tee with the green being on the left of the first fairway. Trying not to hit the 4 ball on the 17th green or those on the 18th tee I aimed my tee shot down the left and watched it disappear into the thick rough never to be seen again. The 2nd tee shot was up over the bank where I lost my first ball ! I didn't find that one either !! The fairway fell away steeply down to the green. The 3rd and 4th are steep up hill tee shots. There's a sign pointing you in the direction of the 5th tee which is hidden from view about 100 yards away. The 5th plays back across the 4th fairway with the green bring to the far side of the 4th tee. The 6th tee was back up the hill !! I stood on the 7th tee which is directly above the 1st green looking across to the green 177 yards away which is just above the 18th tee !! By now I was shattered and we sat on a bench and watch a group of walkers down below us staggering up the 1st fairway. I knew exactly how they felt. After the 7th we were on the high flatter part of the course and the breeze had now turned into a wind. There are some long holes up there and the fairways hadn't been cut. The par 3 14th was straight into the wind. It's only 167 yards but I used a wood ! The 15th and 16th run along the edge of the cliff. The 16th tee shot is over the 15th green !! The 16th green is down a very steep slope with a great view along the coast. I can't say I've ever played a hole quite like that ! If you have never played the 17th before then it's unplayable. Expect to lose your ball. Especially if you follow the instructions on the tee board. I staggered up the sleep slope to the 18th tee !!
If you play this course do yourself a favour and hire a buggy and you will probably enjoy the experience. There are notice boards on every tee telling you how to play the hole and the staff and members are very friendly. Shame the clubhouse was shut when we finished so we couldn't recover with a drink.
Axe cliff
Being a retired person I am always up for a challenge. I don't carry my clubs anymore I have a non assisted trolley ( no battery). The course especially the first 9 holes was a bit of a challenge the second nine where a little bit easier on the legs and the views weren't half bad either everything was great until the 18th two more steep hills to encounter however I managed the course and in a way enjoyed it . Thanks very much Axecliff.
Fantastic little gem of a course
What a great find.
Well worth a visit and at least one round on this hidden away little gem of a course.
Well presented, great greens and what fantastic views.
To me highly underrated and I played millionaires golf, no one around.
Great staff on and off of the course and very welcoming members.
A must add to your golf tour locations.
A great challenge
The course is a great golfing challenge. Fantastic views across seaton.
It us very hilly and you need to read the info on the tee boxes as you have a number of blind shots.
A great day out
Hilly
We had a great time playing here. It is very hilly & is a challenge. Lots of blind tee shots, when you’re reading the planner on each tee, it helps. It will be easier next time we play there. Definitely going to return, as this is lovely course with fantastic views. The clubhouse is small, but the staff were friendly and welcoming.
If you’re in the area, I would recommend having a round here.
Thanks for a great day!
Impossibly quiet
Played a 3-ball with a pal and my 13 yr old grandson and it was brilliant. Cool bright day on the cliff top. Course in great nick, well drained after last week's rain and good grass cover for so early in the year. They've reduced the areas of deep grass so the course is generally very forgiving. No way back from over the cliff, though. Bunkers are poor at the moment, desperately in need of good sand.
Most notably, there were so few playing it's such a shame for the business.
We tee'd off at 13:00 and there were times with half the course in sight when there were no other players in sight.
I've played here often and never tire of it. Great value too..
Disappointed
Despite website offering delicious food including breakfast, the surly young man in the clubhouse just said that they didn’t and that the website was nothing to do with him. The course was tired and in need of attention, especially the bunkers. One good thing (for us and not the club) was that the course was empty with only one other three ball playing. The views are great.
A fair challenge
An enjoyable morning spent playing Axe Cliff. The course is well laid out, a good challenge. Great views
Drains well
Considering recent rain the course was very good with no temporary greens.
It is a hilly course with a number of blind shots.
A windy round
Course looked in fine condition bearing in mind the recent rains we've had. No temporary greens in play at all. However, there was little distinction between the fairway and the rough (maybe a bit too wet to get the mowers out?). The winter tee mats were a bit small, but they were stable. Strong winds plagued us for virtually all the round but managed some half decent scores. Absolute bargain and the course was largely deserted too.
Millionaire's Golf
What a beautiful place to spend an afternoon.
Mid-October, still warm enough for shorts, wall to wall sunshine, wonderful views across Seaton and along the coast from Torbay to Portland, little wind and next to no-one else on the course. Fabulous, especially for the relatively slow player.
Course in as good nick as I've seen it. Some areas previously left long, now manicured. Not all, of course, but some helping difficult drives. Greens too in good order, better than previous. The course in general is wide and forgiving but with a few tricky holes to test even the best. Namely. 2, 3, 7, 16, 17, 18. I can't master 17, requires pinpoint drive and fine second to a green in a gathering deep hollow. Very hard. They say SI 4, I say no.1.
Very enjoyable, tricky in part..
