Canyon Springs Golf Club is a true Hill Country course. You need to stay on the fairways or bring plenty of balls. Using an old farm to build on this choice piece of Texas real estate, this land has been artfully transformed into what many golfers will refer to as among the very best of what Texas has to offer. With five sets of tee boxes on each hole, demanding greens, natural Hill Country surroundings and magnificent limestone waterfalls on two holes, this 7,000-plus-yard course presents a significant challenge to event the most experienced golfers (and even those who think they are).

Canyon Springs

Excellent course especially for the price. Very challenging. Course was in good condition. Greens still need some work. Course had a lot of rain in the last few days and the course maintenance was out fixing all of the sand traps immediately which you don't see often for many courses in this price range. This was my 3rd time playing and will play again.

Only a Shadow of It's Former Condition

I have played this course since it was built over 20 years ago and the infestation of so many homesites has eliminated the former rural and pristine ambiance of this course.
We played here in late March on a warm Spring day, the pace of play was terrible because there are no marshalls on the course.
There was no one to greet us and no cart guys when we arrived at 10:00 AM.
The pro shop was friendly, but they now want to charge for range balls, "because too many people wanted to practice for free."
Our starter was a friendly fellow who has been around for six years and everyone seemed to know him.
Hole #1 is a very short dogleg right that is still cart path only and this causes a logjam on the tee.
Hole #2 used to be a challenging blind tee shot over an old well. It's now a miniature golf-like hole that faces a massive apartment complex that has encroached upon the fairway. We were playing behind a foursome of regulars and two of them actually hit their shots into the apartment's property.
The 3rd hole is a simple short par three, but we watched a player take a ten on this hole. Hole six is a split fairway that used to be equally divided. The tees now favor the right side and the second shot is uphill and deceptively long.
The condition of 75% of the greens was poor. The greens were thin and covered with sand just like you have after an aeration.
Many of the tees were not mowed and the fairways near trees were covered with leaves. Live oak trees shed leaves in February and early March. There's not much maintenance here. There are many rough areas around the green where the soil has eroded but has not been replaced.
Throughout this course the massive build up of apartment buildings and homes on every spare inch of turf has drastically changed the character of this layout. This is a classic example of poor design that allowed no space for greenbelt areas around the course. This is just plain ugly.
I still enjoy hole #16. This is a long dogleg left with a lake. The second shot on this long par four is longer than it looks and the landing area is a small green with water left.
Hole 18 ends with an approach shot that has the canyon springs falling sixty feet from a limestone cliff.
The GPS distances on their cart were at variance with my watch on a number of occasions. The cart paths are starting to need maintenance with breaks that need patching.

Good course

I got a deal on golfnow for this tee time, so it was only$25 which was a good value.
Really nice fun course, greens could've been better. But fairways and tee boxes were good.
I'd play again if I found a good deal.

Great Time to Play

In the past I've found the pace of play slow. Upwards of 5 hours to finish a round. However looking at Sunday afternoon finished in 3 playing as a single. Course was in great shape the fairways were plus and nice to hit from greens were soft but a good speed to putt on.

Slow Play

Our round took over 5 hours to play. There are no marshals on the course. On some holes we would have three groups waiting to play.

The course has a fun layout but the greens are currently in poor shape. Significant amount of damage to the greens and covered with sand.

On the signature hole with waterfall, the waterfall was turned off.

Never felt welcomed

I booked a tee time for my buddies from across Texas to enjoy some golf and good times. When I first arrived I was never greeted but more like being watched as if I was an alien, second staff wasn't friendly what so ever never came up to us and explained the process or give helpful directions, third felt very uncomfortable the staff gave us looks as if we didn't belong , I mean I've golfed at prestigious resorts and ever felt so uncomfortable. Mind you we shot below par and being new to San Antonio I was ashamed and let down and I highly doubt that I would ever play or suggest this course to anyone again I'd rather not be uncomfortable and looked down upon when I actuall want to relax and have a good time ....

I was somewhat disappointed.

I think the course would be in better shape later in the spring, the putting green was closed getting some kink of treatment and rebuilding. The greens on the course I would rate as average at best when Iplayed them, again maybe it was due to the time of year. Everything still brown but asssume it would look much different in peak season. I had never been to San Antonio, if I had to do it over again I would of played a different course, the carts had GPS which was nice.

I would call the clubhouse to ask if they sanded the greens.

Canyon Springs

Course is in overall very good shape. Greens are running at a good pace though not maintained daily. They are consistent though with no problems of burnout or weeds.

Pace of play for a Monday afternoon was good.

Practice area and range is never kept up as well as the course, and the range isn't included in any green fee.

Nice course, worth the price....

Very scenic, very nice course. Depending on the tee's chosen, course can be a real challenge. But, overall, in good shape, very nicely laid out, and had fun seeing all the wildlife. Would recommend to others.

The only issue was that the different tee boxes are not marked. Kinda hard to decipher where to begin, which to use. Should be marked better.

Each cart has a GPS, and is a huge asset.

championship style course

challenging, beautiful,, hills, excellent tees, fairways, huge fast greens. pace of play was ave. but not overly slow. staff helpful =took bag from car to cart and double checked if I had enough practice range balls. This course is not walker friendly. compares to La Cantera Resort, less cost. Some holes looks like Links
well manicured and maintained. Next sunny day , I will play again.

Good value from GolfNow

You can really get a good deal here through GolfNow. Everyone is friendly but the pace of play is very slow! The last 2 weekends that I have gone were both 5.5 hour rounds. The marshals were no where to be found until we were through 5 (started on 10, so 14). Other than that the place is great.

Scenery and greens were beautiful

By far the best golf course. Challenging and fun. I loved the wildlife and theme. The trails to get from one hole to the other was relaxing and beautiful!!! I recommend this course and can't wait to go again on my next visit to San Antonio.
