Fun round
Had a a terrible round, but that's on me. Course was good, some challenging holes, most of which hilly, we walked 18 which got our steps in for the day. The greens have clearly taken a beating from the recent sunshine, so are in a bit of a poor state, but previous visits let me know that isn't the norm. Staff are always great too! Would and do recommend
Dongle Glen Review
Very good day. Course was quiet and conditions were perfect.
Bring all of your breakfast balls!
Me and two friends came to this course initially and it was following torrential rain to which the club accommodated us another round which thankfully was on a much sunnier and drier day.
Shame they moved the first hole to a trickier second hole and overall the course is very challenging. But the course upkeep for us was unfortunately very poor, especially on the back nine.
Me and my friends lost roughly 30-40 balls with the majority lost in open play due to there being a lot of grass cuttings across the course. What was meant to be short rough played like heavy rough and hole 16 was unplayable.
The clubhouse is excellent and its log cabins look lovely, but as a course, I feel the attention for more cabins and better club house has taken away from the golf course upkeep.
Sorry.
Why is it in such terrible condition.
Greens are dead.
Losing balls in middle of the fairway due to cut/long grass.
The worst course I’ve played and I have played some very bad courses
You know a course is bad when you can’t find your ball in the centre of the fairway because the grass is too long. The course layout was questionable but not the worse but no holes that would be considered good. Two par 4 didn’t even have fairways so yh , don’t play there, it’s not worth it
Disappointing
Sadly I echo the sentiment of some of the other recent reviews on here. A few years ago some friends and I used to frequent this course. Back then it was excellent value for money and the course was in really good shape.
Recently we’ve played there it just seems there has been no care or attention at all to the playing conditions. We lost so many balls hitting down the middle of the fairway because the grass was so long. This course has the potential to be really good and is in such a beautiful setting it’s such a shame to see the state it’s in right now.
Course has gone down in the past 2 years, really bad
I love the layout of the course and the challenges each hole bring. Hadn’t played there October 2021 so when’s deal via GN came up I was so excited. The place has changed so much and for the bad.
Hole 1 is gone, replaced by a new hole 18 where the old range used to be but that’s not a big issue as the new hole 18 is decent.
When we played none of the fairways were cut; in fact the hole course was not cut at all. Lost so many balls on the fairways. The greens were patchy and wry bumpy with recently placed seeds showing. Pretty sad sight for what is a great course. See video below. The fairway shown is the new hole 16 (old 17) and that was the fairway. Suggest GN take it off their offers until the course is back again, if ever
Extremely disappointed
I have played this course several times before and whilst it has not always been in the most attractive of condition I must say that on this occasion the course was in the worst condition of any course I have ever played anywhere in the world.
The course did not appear to have been tended to for absolutely ages and there were no definable fairways hence it was like playing through the rough all the time and it was like a hurdles race when putting, there were that many bumps the ball kept jumping.
The justification for this was that there had been a lot of rain in the area and the course could not be cut- true, That said my playing partner visited another course in the are the previous day and the lawnmowers were out and the course was in very good condition.
Due to the condition of the course we declared our game an honourable draw after 9 holes and I did something I've never done before, I picked up and walked most of the rest of the course. In all probability I will not be back.
Don’t play here
Horrendously boggy, fairways might as well have been deep rough, and anything off these was lost completely, extremely hilly and continuous blind shots
Avoid in Winter
Probably quite an enjoyable course to play when the ground is dry. I played in November & the course was very soft & a slippery mud-bath in many places. A hilly course with nearly every hole, except the par 3s, having at least one blind shot, so expect several lost (plugged) balls when its wet. The first hole was out of play, undergoing some work, so a very short 'mickey mouse' par 4 hole has been crammed in at the end. The starting hole was the 2nd on my gps. One hole was on a temp. green, the others were pretty scruffy & appeared to be diseased, but ran smoother than they looked . Take a change of clothes to avoid mud on the inside of your car......
After playing this course, I wont rush back. The first hole has been removed to make room for more accomodation, and I feel the accomodation and hotel is more important than the golf here.
The greens were incredible slow, and in pretty poor condition, I know it's been really wet recently, but they were very bobbly, sand everywhere. The fairways were decent enough but there is tons of ground under repair right now. Also the winter tee mats are old, and seen much better days, they are completely solid with no give.
The course is a tricky walk when wet, even though it's been a relatively dry week the course was slippery throughout and carts were off for the day.
Met a couple locals on my way round though, who were brilliant gentlemen and have stated they are working hard on improving the course.
It's just a shame they've replaced the first hole with a terrible 18th, got rid of the driving range and really feels more like somewhere to stay than a golf course.
Do not play at fingle glenn golf hotel
Out of all the courses i have played this is by far the worst course.
greens were terrible patches all over unplayable golf course. They do not look after there golf course and do not take care of fairways, greens and tee box was uneven ground. Do not play here.
Fingle Glen dry Course
Because of the prolonged dry spell all courses in the UK are struggling but the greens here were a lot worse then many others, lots of barren patches. It was exceptionally hot when we played.
No fault of Fingle Glen but GolfNow apparently do NOT have an agreement to sell slots and we had to pay direct or it would have been a wasted trip.. Receptionist was very apologetic and explained that this is happening quite frequently. GolfNow currently have many more slots showing on their website. I am awaiting a refund from GolfNow.
