Well worth a visit…
Ironically I live opposite the course, but haven’t played for a long time, this was my first outing for 8 years.
Friendly welcome when we arrived, which is always nice especially since I think we were the only people there as the weather was so bad, (which incidentally was the reason for the 4* on course conditions). We were very lucky as it literally stopped raining as we reached the first tee. Suffice to say it was very boggy underfoot, nevertheless we had a good round and we both really enjoyed the course, well worth a visit and hopefully I’ll get back to playing more regularly…
Enjoyable day out again at Bells
Rain held off on the day and the course was well maintained with grass being cut regularly and great condition greens. Booking process was great via Golf now and course were happy to change our play date without a charge when we made an error, which is more than other courses have done. Had to play off temporary tees however to protect the main tees, which was not ideal, but understandable and otherwise a great value day out - its a shame its not nearer to bristol for us.
Great value for winter golf
Considering time of year the course was very playable but long grass off fairways made hard work for senior golfers (my wife and I).
A tight course with some crossovers where care is needed. Virtually all tees were on mats which shortened the course.
However being able to get out and play at such good value was a bonus.
Improved / Compact course
The course has improved a lot since last played 2 years ago. Fairways in good condition. The course is very compact with lots of fairways right next to each other, this causes a lot of crossing in front of the tees. Pace of play was slow today due to lots of societies. If you can get the course for a cheap price then I’d recommend but i would not pay full price.
Golf at Forest of Dean G.C. Coleford uk.
Tee off was 13.39pm and I was looking forward to returning to this course after thirty nine years! the layout seemed different from what i can remember, the fairways were ok and not a problem playing off these, however the Greens were terrible, grass on most to long and patchy with a uneven surface in places, made putting rather a lottery....I know the owners need to try and keep the course open to bring in much needed revenue, but I wonder if the poor comments will ultimately do more damage than perhaps keeping it closed for a little while longer to give the ground a chance to dry out and for the Greens to be prepared correctly for the Summer season ahead.
Gone downhill
Yes the weather has been poor this winter, but still off mats all 18 holes, one hole closed , 4 temporary greens. All greens very poor. Course not particularly wet either. Have enjoyed playing here previously, will leave it a while before I return. Society out the same day, they said they won't be back.
Great layout.
Course over all is a very good course. 17holes were open and some holes had temporary greens and temporary tees. The fairways were all in very good condition and when everything is open this looks a fantastic course. With all the rain we have had it's to be expected and nice to see a course protecting greens rather than keeping them open, only to cause more damage. Staff in the shop and club house were very friendly. Over all a great experience. Thanks.
Don’t play in winter
The course only had 12 holes open, 50% of which had temporary shocking greens, the holes and greens that were closed looked really good but we weren’t able to play them, no mention on any website or social media that me paying for my group would not include a full course, very very poor, the worst course I’ve played at. In the summer it could be completely different but do not go here in the winter, or when it’s been wet. I will not be returning.
Forest of Dean
I know it’s been really tough for golf courses with heavy rains over the winter period , but it was disappointing that there was no guidance on how many holes were on temporary greens (there were quite a few) although it was clearly communicated that holes 12 and 13 were not open for play so that was appreciated. If you haven’t played the course before it’s not the best layout or clearly marked to find the next tee when you walk off the green.
That said I am sure in the summer this would be a really enjoyable course to play as it has some intersections holes , the hot deal though did make the course great value so still enjoyable and good value overall.
Enjoyable round
Really friendly staff in pro shop.
Only 16 holes were open due to the recent weather with a number of temporary green.
Course was in decent enough condition considering the weather we have had and was an enjoyable round with friendly members.
Would love to come back in the summer months in what is an enjoyable course.
Conditions of the greens- not good enough
The course is one that is interesting to play. Quite pretty in some places too. However the greens this time round are in a terrible state. Seems like they are attacked by something. very patchy and bumpy. No point in trying to putt.
Hi, We are due to play there tomorrow and were hopeful that all greens would on. How many were on temps?
Many thanks
