Shocking
I played here years ago but the course has gone severely downhill. Course under renovation but still no excuse for the state of the. Greens and bunkers . Won’t be plying again
The course has been neglected
I understand that the course is under repair but for a first time visitor it was very hard to navigate between holes as there was no signage and the greens were terrible
Greens improving but not quite there
Beautiful course but the reviews are right about the greens, although they’re improving. Lots of bare areas on the greens with holes due to groundwork, so putting is very hit and miss. Clubhouse closed, pro shop is a temporary shed currently
Under construction.
So taking into account the course is under construction and I knew this before going and had read the reviews. People were still saying it was good to play. In fairness the fairways were good but that's the only plus point. There was no clear signs for where the tee's where, the greens were awful. Trying to putt was frustrating, the ball would visibly bounce along the green and bounce into a different direction. There didn't seem to be much thought or control over tee off times. Having to guess or ask people where the tee's where was even more frustrating. The price has been dropped to accommodate the construction, but it's not dropped enough. I would go back but not until its finished. It wasn't an enjoyable game of golf
Great value
Played not for a couple of weeks amazing how the course has progressed greens improving since last time.
Wow - getting better?
We played Frodsham golf course - yet again, have played there fairly regularly of late, almost weekly - on Thursday. What a beautiful day, what wonderful scenery...and, the golf was not too shabby as well - needless to say, a most enjoyable time at very reasonable value. Improvements are happening by the week; it was nice to hit in shots to the greens and have them hold, together with holing a few putts...even though one had to repair a few pitch marks, which I guess ‘the moaners’ had not bothered to repair!!!
I mention “value” because I have read so many critical reviews - where people only look to find fault and thereby miss all the good things taking place with the course and facilities! People seem to forget that they are playing at discounted rates (big notices on the online booking!), whilst all these improvements are taking place - believe me, this place is going to be a treat to play again next year, if not earlier. I, for one, can’t wait to see even more improvement with the greens either next week or the week after. See you soon FGC. Thanks!
Excellent views
Really nice corse a few greens a bit sandy due to maintenance and work going on around the corse will be really good once finished would play here again even with maintenance going on really enjoyed it
Can see the improvements being made
Honestly this course has come a long way from how poor the conditions where
You can see the investment in the course as you play it, 12 months from now it will be back to what it once was
Tee boxes being rebuilt, greens under going extensive repairs
Fairways are immaculate, shrubbery trimmed back so as not to hinder and lose drifted shots, bunkers need relaying with sand but overall I would certainly play this course again, and I am quite looking forward to what it's potential could be should the investment continue
Overall for the price its a bargain, it would be harsh to be too critical as I think the changes being made and the money being pumped in is there to see and next year it will be back to its best
A once great course now in bad shape
The position of Frodsham is fantastic however the course is in a bad condition.
Lots of work going on so hopefully it will be back to it’s best in the future
Greens are shocking and there are no yardage markers.
I’ll leave it til next year to see how it turns out
Really good! Nice changes!
Course is getting some really big upgrades and looks great! Greens are great too and are only going to get better
Frodsham
What a shame, nice routing and some great views. Course was in dreadful condition. Several new tees built but not turfed. Greens very poor condition. Would of been better finished one hole at a time instead 5 or 6 holes shortened. Would play again once work completed.
Getting better!
Of late, this course has been getting a lot of bad reviews - some of them, particularly remarks regarding many of the greens, were not unfounded - however, the management has been working very hard on making improvements.i
We played last Tuesday, and it was wonderful to see gangs of course-staff working away; not only is there huge work going into building new tees, but the greens were a vast improvement to our last game, with all the greens having been hollow tined and top-dressed (they were actually pleasantly springy to walk on and, given the hollow timing, reasonably true), together with tees and fairways cut and the bunkers raked.
We, as usual, had a most enjoyable round, taking in the difficult to beat splendid views. The club staff warned us of the work going on, but, particularly considering the reduced green fees, one could not really find fault in the value for money!
Frodsham will be great again next year! However, we will be back to play again before then...see you soon. Thanks!
Ploughed field
Played this course on Saturday and it rates as the worse course I have ever played the greens are awful they have hardly any grass on them and have been aerated so there are half inch holes everywhere and more sand than you find on Bournemouth beach fairways are good layout of the course poor with no markers showing where to go don't waste your money try it again in a years time when there is some grass on the greens
Undergoing maintenance
The course has the potential to be excellent but whilst it’s undergoing maintenance it’s tough to judge. The real issue was the greens were in quite bad condition but we were told that these are being upgraded very soon, if that’s the case the course would be great
Let's get a bit of balance here.
So after reading all the reviews on here and other platforms I was really wary about booking a round at Frodsham, but with a chance to play last Friday and tee times available I jumped on. I'm not an experienced golfer and just really enjoy getting out.
So I tried to book an early tee time of 9.26am but for some reason the site glitched and I lost the spot. I managed to get 10.26am instead.
Hoping to get an earlier spot I arrived at Frodsham at 9.15am and parked up. Initial impressions were of a nice drive in with good parking, though it was clear from the start there was a lot of work going on, there were workers milling about and the areas off the fairways were cut up by dumper trucks etc. There is no club house at the minute so signing in takes place at a small hut just off the car park, not a major issue at all I felt. I went up and explained to the chap behind the counter that I'd wanted an earlier time but had to get a later one due to the site crashing. He quickly took a look at his bookings and told me I could jump on there and then if I wanted, in fact another member had just signed in and he was sure he'd appreciate the company. I declined the offer of a partner, purely due to my standard and not wanting to hold a more experienced golfer up!
I quickly grabbed my gear and headed back to the hut to see about a trolley. £4 got me my handle and I was ready to go. A quick word from the starter who explained there was a lot of work going on so Tee 1 was not in its usual spot but 40 or so yards further up the fairway. He then gave me directions to get there.
I headed off and found Tee 1. There was a 2 ball ahead and a 4 ball in front of that, but both swiftly let me play through with no issues at all. Hole 1 is a nice gentle handshake of a hole, Par 4 with a wide welcoming fairway. I managed a decent drive and my round was underway.
Now a lot of talk on here is of the greens and approaching the first I saw 2 issues. 1, the green side bunkers were quite low of sand and a bit overgrown. Not a massive deal, I managed to get in there on shot 3 to explore and found it solid but playable. The green itself was rough and uneven, even the best putter will find it tough to get a good read and roll so I decided I was going to give myself generous gimmes through the round to counter this!
This theme continued around the course, some greens are playable, others just are not, but again, I knew this from the start and it really didn't dent my enjoyment of the day. There are some absolutely wonderful holes on this course and the scenery is awesome, I stopped a few times to take a picture and just take a minute.
An issue I found was signage. There is often a short walk between holes and a few are not signposted at all, luckily I use a GPS app and it directed me to where I was going, but better signage would help a lot.
Standout holes for me were the 2 long Par 5's, 18 especially is great, the Par 3's and a wonderful Par 4 16th where you tee off and just hammer your drive towards a crop of trees over a gorge in the distance. The dog leg left is spectacular.
I managed to get around in just over 2 hours and headed back to the hut to drop off my trolley. It was there I managed to get a decent chat with Paul, the owner of the course. He asked how I found the day and me being me I didn't hold back on my thoughts. To his utmost credit Paul then spent a good 35 minutes going through his plans and a timetable of works to get the course up to a fantastic standard. That starts with the greens, work commences this Tuesday (8th September). there is also a plan for the bunkers (an expensive plan by the sounds of it), as well as a new club house and coffee shop/bar/9th hole type venue. I mentioned signage and he was very responsive and said he would get on with sorting that as soon as possible. I think a little thing like that will begin to help persuade a few more people to give it another go.
At the end of the day I paid £17 for 18 holes of very challenging gold and £4 for a trolley. The course was not busy and I didn't feel rushed at any point.
Pro's
Cheap round of golf
Great holes
Challenging course
Friendly team
Great potential in near future with a clear plan
Cheap membership to be had
Con's
Greens in need of repair
Bunkers a bit overgrown
Lots of work ongoing so the periphery of the course is a bit cut up and messy
Tee boxes not in ideal spots whilst being worked on
Small pond on 18 that had a magnetic attraction for my American Golf own brand golf balls!!
In conclusion
I will play Frodsham again, I have no doubt. I really enjoyed the challenge, and having now been there, know what to expect and I can only see it getting better over the winter months ready for a new year. They aren't hiding the issues and are upfront if you ask, I think a lot of the stick they are getting online is really unwarranted, sure it's not a PGA standard course yet but you are paying less than £20!
The owner is obviously massively invested in the venue and has a great plan of what he wants to do and I can only wish everyone at the course the best of luck.
Phenomenal fairways, unbelievable layout & great staff!
I played Frodsham for the 2nd time today in 3 weeks and once again had a great time. The course is undergoing heavy maintenance at the moment, but this doesn’t prevent you from having a great time and enjoying the course. The staff were different today my first visit - both times they have been very friendly and great to have a chat with. Every hole feels different and possesses different challenges, most fairways are wide which really helps with my high handicap! The course has diggers dotted about and obvious maintenance is going ahead. Despite the on going maintenance this course is brilliant and out of several courses I have played in the northwest, is the best value for money. Once all the maintenance is complete, this course will be absolutely amazing! Best £15 you can spend on a round in the northwest!
