Improvement
I played this course at least four years ago and it has improved massively. The amenities are superb and the staff very helpful. The course has improved so much if I want to be critical maybe tidy the tee boxes up and the first cut needs to be a bit shorter. Overall well worth the money definitely be back.
Much better than reviews suggest
Apart from a little slow(delayed tee off and a lot of players ahead due to a charity bike ride delaying the start) the greens were good, the fairways quite tightly cut, the first cut perhaps a little too long but the tee boxes were awful.
All in all much better than a 2/5 as the ratings say but not quite a four
Shameful condition
Grassless patches on greens. No definition between edge of rough and fairway. Driving range closed for overflow parking for the ice cream shop more often than not if weather ok. Putting practice green replaced with crazy golf course. Not the worst layout for a municipal but priorities are elsewhere now.
Awful course conditions
Do not play this course, it is awful, anti weed membrane coming through the bunkers, awful tees and greens, I've played better pitch and putt in public parks. 15 people were queued up at the first tee waiting to tee off so it took 45mins to play the first hole.
Pay a bit extra and play a quality members course.
Awful
Played there this morning. Far too many people booked in for the same time (9am). We finally finished the first hole 50 minutes after we were supposed to tee off. The course was an abomination with more sand on the greens than the bunkers.
You couldn't identify where the fairway ended and the rough began the grass was so long. The tee boxes were the worst I have ever seen one didn't even have grass on it.
We came off after 9 holes it was so bad. Didn't help that it took 2 and a half hours to play them either.
I can't believe they have the cheek to charge nearly twenty pounds.
A truly awful course, save your money and stay in bed or pay a bit more for a decent course.
Average
Played here a few times and whilst not so bad, there are much better courses around at a cheaper price. At the time of this review, the prices on teeofftimes show no discount on what you would pay if you just turned up. So £15 midweek and over £18 on the weekend are far too expensive when there are very impressive private courses to play for £10.
The site has decent amenities with a 9 hole course as well, plus a practice chipping section and a driving range. These are paid seperate to the main course. Pasking is charged but redeemable at the office. Overall not a bad course and it is well worth it if there were decent discounts on the prices available. However at full price I would play elsewhere if had to choose
Council owned reflects condition
We found the greens to be in poor condition (extremely slow), the fairways not clearly defined with level of grass. Generally looked not well kept. I have played Pennington Flash in Leigh which was extremely poor, Haigh Hall was better but we should have gone to a private club. I used to play the course every Sunday when I was a lot younger, the course has been remodelled since then, so I was interested to return. I don't think I will be back
