Greens weren't in their usual excellent condition . Needed a cut. Couple of temporary greens still due to it still being quite wet so not as good as usual experience there. Be a good idea to use the long par 3 on the back 9 when this happens as green still looks great and you basically still have to walk it
A mixed bag.
There’s no doubt, Handsworth is a cracking course. So seeing it available to play on Golf Now for £35 was a no brainier.
On arrival we checked in at the pro shop where the lady that served us was super friendly, super helpful and super hospitable.
Went through to the clubhouse bar and locker room which is a proper old fashioned set up, I quite like all that.
Then we arrived at the 1st tee. There were 4 groups in front of us and every group was running about half an hour late. Not good.
Mixtures of 2, 3, and 4 balls. so group speed was effected across the course. We watched the group in front of us tee off on every hole.
The course was looking good. Baring in mind the time of year and the weather, the tees were good, fairway definition, good aprons, good bunkers, and the greens were ok. The greens had recently been hallowtined, the grass had grown back so they looked bobbly. They were still pretty quick, but putts were bouncing.
After 3 holes we’re thinking, this is good value and you’re thinking how good it could be in the summer.
Then arrived at the fourth tee which was a mat. Not terrible, but a little disappointing and that’s when a couple of other things also crept in that were a let down. In particular a temporary hole (par 3 6th) which was just a bit of field with a flag in it. Think there were 3 temporary greens in play, half a dozen mats on tees and while this wasn’t terrible, it just took the shine off.
Would I play it again? Yes.
Was it great value for money? Not quite.
Proper golf course
The layout of the course is fantastic, all holes are unique to them selfs, A real challenge of your golfing ability.
Not happy
Rang up the pro 2 days before playing and was assured trolleys allowed and no temporary greens based on the weather forecast. Got to the course to discover there was 18 temporary greens. All temps were in awful condition and most had been holatined, as well as being very small - 5/6 yards diameter.. Couldnt/wouldn’t change booking because we’d booked via GolfNow! Very Disappointed!.
Disappointing day at handsworth
I've played this course before and I was looking forward to another enjoyable day......however....on arrival we were informed that all of the greens were on temps. This was especially frustrating as we had not had rain for over 2 weeks and it was a mild day. As we went around the course it was clear that the greens were in perfect condition for play so it was a mystery as to why they were all off. One of the holes was closed completely with no prior warning. To add insult to injury we as a twoball were held up for 12 holes by a threeball which contained a beginner golfer, finally we were let thru begrudgingly. Such a shame as handsworth is a great course when in full flow.
Great course couldn’t fault
Really nice course, and In great condition, had heard horrible things about tee times and members but NO , we tee’d off on time and easy pro was very helpful and no holdups, great established course and nice clubhouse, all in all a great day definitely will return soon 💯
They don’t have tee times for members
Because there is no tee times for members. Twice I have arrived and there has been a que of 7 groups just waiting to tee off the first hole. Something needs to change to stop the ques
Great Course, poor members
Fantastic course, one we enjoy playing thoroughly. However a few select members let the course down today, telling us that our tee time “didn’t matter”. 4 4 balls in front of us, a 2 ball. The solution given by the pro was to tee off on either the 4th, 10th or 15th instead. We decided to tee off the 10th. When we reached the 1st we still ended up in a queue waiting for 20 minutes for 3 groups to tee off Infront of us.
Shame as it sullied what was a great course, in fantastic condition for end of November.
Lovely day out.
Nice welcome in the pro shop. Haven't played here for a while, but got to say the course was in great condition. The greens were superb, had no hold ups. Only gripe was some of the flags on the back nine were very hard to see (blue flags hard to see when in shadow). Really looking forward to playing here again.
Great course - value for money
A challenging but intersting beautiful golf course
Handsworth 22
Great thinkers course. Good scoring opportunities. Lovely spongey fairways
Escaped the madness
Course is in great condition as always , lovely mature course , new addition holes work well with original lay out.
Very happy to of switched off from that days events .
Tha k you for opening that day .
Disappointing bank holiday golf
Unfortunately the course wasn't in good condition. Whilst we recognised it was a bank holiday, so greenkeepers may not have worked in a couple of days, some of the tees were in really poor condition (resembling rough on at least one tee). The greens also were extremely slow, but again recognised they must have just been hollow-tined and heavily sanded. Still, not good for £40 greenfee. Elsewhere, the bunkers, fairways etc just didn't look good. Also, we booked a tee time of 10am but clearly this was not realistic as about 15 groups of members rocked up to play a texas scramble comp at the same time. In fairness, the pro was able to start us off the 15th, but it was all a bit of a squeeze. Two of our group hadn't played before and won't be returning for a good while if ever. Disappointing and certainly poor value for £40
Lovely course
We played this course for the first time and what a pleasant surprise! A stunning course in the city with enough hazards and undulating greens to make it a challenging but enjoyable round of golf
Gem of a course
Well worth the £40. It's a little oasis hidden in what is pretty much the city. Fairways were lush, greens ran consistently even on the higher holes. Staff very nice, and the course just looks great some nice memorial benches dotted about. Some of the holes are abit hard to find the right tee box and three holes on my Garmin came up as something different, looks like they are or have been changing the layout but I might just need to update my GPS.
Nice variety of long and short holes making it a scoreable course but one you need to think about with some strategic bunkers.
Will be coming back for sure.
The course was well manicured and a joy to play well worth a visit
