Fantastic course with spectacular views
Play the course most weeks, nice and quiet most nights and the views over the upper Calder valley are amazing.
Tricky course that needs careful thought and ball positioning for most holes.
Cheeky Nine Hole
Challenging cheeky nine hole,, played same holes twice to make up for 18. On a calm day with the right club it’s relatively easy but can be easily caught out on some of the cheeky par 3’s and end up losing your ball for ever.
Wouldn’t like to play it in the wind…
Tough
This for me is a placement course. To get a good card you needs accuracy with irons. I didn't use a driver but would on a couple of holes. I found there were blind shots off the tee on a couple and a few onto greens you couldn't see. But with more experience t wouldnt be a problem. I play off 12 but managed all par 4s on or around the green in 2 shots. The 2 tricky par 3s are a test as missing right leaves a big uphill lob onto the green. Hardest part is getting to the club. Just take it easy.
Challenging course
Awsome course awsome setting little bit windy but hey ho it is on the tops.
Couse was little confusing at first till we looked on the map on the back of the score card overall the course is in good condition green keepers were there maintaining the course which was good to see.,
First time here would defo play again
Good day out ,however no staff .
We played the course ,really enjoyed the day
Quite hilly .
A must visit
Excellent condition considering the weather. Incredible views and some really interesting holes. A real hidden gem.
A delightful 9 (12) holes
Hebden is very local to me and as I think I have played it 7 times or so in the past 12 months.
The Good
Views,
Pace of play,
Rarely are there people on more than 50% of the holes at any time,
The 7th through 9th holes are a true joy
7th a par 3 uphill chip challenge,
the 8th is either a Par 3 in good conditions or a wonderful place to lose 5 balls in the wind,
The 9th is an eagle view of the Moors, the club and my personal favourite hole on the area - a genuine Eagle chance for a top notch golfer, the potential to feel good for the likes of me
Clubhouse - nice layout, lovely people
Car park - good size, great sized bays for each car.
Cost
Rarely can you not get a booking, so it's a good fall back if you suddenly have a few hours free to get our there.
The less good (but not bad)
Warm up facilities are basic - one net.
The 3rd and the 5th share a fairway and are fairly repetitive holes.
For me, the scorecard does not explain the course well, after 1 trip round it makes some sense, but without a local telling you exactly where to aim, it is not intuitive from the card.
Some of the paths are trolly nightmares of you're not paying attention
It is moorland, so it is steep in places, if you're not one for hills, this course isn't for you.
The club is (frok my experience) rarely busy, so I have yet to see the clubhouse busy, but this could well be due to me fitting golf on around work, rather than playing on busy days.
The 18 holes are 9 played twice with minimal changes in the tee shots on a few holes. Given the 3rd and the 5th are essentially the same hole, 18 holes can start to feel a chore in places.
Summary
I really do enjoy Hebden Golf Club. There are far flashier courses in the area but very few that rival a lovely pace of play, those views and an almost cast iron guarantee of a game on a whim. That the club still uses an honesty box to play a round shows how leisurely this place can be played. It is a little bit of an unknown gem and I will be back several times this year when my afternoon meetings get binned.
Personal preference is to pay for 18, play through 9, then swing back around to the 7th, play the last 3 holes again and call it a day.
