Good deal but should’ve been closed
Never played at Lingfield before. I called up and was warned it was very wet. £15 for a round is a steal. The pro shop was small as had the essentials. Staff were very friendly and informative. I was warned before playing that there were a few mats on the course and that the 2nd was shortened to a par 3. The ground was sodden, pure mud in spots and I lost three balls that were down the middle of the fairway due to them plugging in the ground. The course really should have been closed to save it for the summer and the mats had no tee holes to be able to put a tee for woods or drivers making it very hard to get off the tee.
Not worth your time
In short, Lingfield is an interesting, varied layout but criminally neglected, to the point that it may no longer be worth even the modest green fee.
Playing in Jan is a luxury, so I hold no fault to the ground staff for the course being wet, but encountering bunkers with foot and paw prints all over them is frustrating, but at least those ones have sand in where as some have grass growing in them.
On back-to-back visits 6 months apart, ive been told I’d have to go pick up my own balls on the range as they ‘hadn’t had a chance to go pick them up’.
This course has lots of potential and better practice facilities than most but is completely mismanaged.
Should be closed
I can't belive the course is open the condition it is in.
It is daylight robbery taking people's money and letting them play on it.
Luved this course, great test with a lot of narrow holes so definitely need to be accurate. Played in very wet conditions and hard to tell if course drains well or not as very muddy. £25 is one of best value rounds I’ve played and then after was able to get a drink while watching some racing
Challenging course and fantastic value
A well looked after course that had a number of difficult holes. It is fantastic value for the very low price.
Lovely Unique Course
A very unique and well thought out course - a good mix of short and long holes, manageable for high scorers and challenging enough for low scorers.
There was a large society day going on playing ‘Best Hall’ in groups of 4. They took an eternity to play and held up play on every hole. I was eventually allowed to play through, but had to tee off in front of them on pretty much every hole. Due to the delays I had to skip out 12-16 to make sure I left in a reasonable time.
Unsure what the course could have done to improve this but still kind of frustrating. Would come back here and hope that I’m more fortunate with the groups on surrounding holes.
Would not play here again
I am not one to usually leave a bad review, but felt this was necessary. The course was ridiculously tight in places, to the point if you were 5 yards off line, you would not be seeing your ball again. I play off 6, and I like a challenge, but this was simply stupid at points. The tees were in awful condition, extremely uneven, and in need of a good watering. Most fairways were a maximum of 25-30 yards wide, and the entrance to the 17th green was no more than 15 yards wide, with water either side. There was trees hanging in front of about 6 or 7 tee boxes, making it impossible to hit the fairway unless you can shape the ball by 30 yards. Honestly, the course was laughable at points, and I will not be returning.
Fabulous course
Really enjoyed the course and the layout is a real gem.
Would have to mention that the greens aren’t great and the bunkers really need attention.
Tee to green on this course is a joy and it was just a shame that the bunkers and greens weren’t in good condition.
That said I’d play here again anytime.
Poor greens
The state of the greens was very poor and well below par for a course that i have played many time before
To be specific, they were patchy, bumpy (not rolled), with large amounts of bare surface, i.e. no grass
Balls did not roll true and badly affected the 3 players during this round
Almost perfect.
A very picturesque course with some challenging holes. The greens and bunkers need improving. They're playable but with a little more TLC they'd be perfect.
Poorly maintained
Second time playing this course. Others are running firm, well drained and maintained at this time of year (May) but Lingfield has more rough than fairway, is very boggy and the greens mossy and bare patches. Sadly not worth the money so won't be returning.
A lovely course is in there, it doesn’t get a chance to shine
Played on a Bank Holiday Monday afternoon.
Course was in poor condition throughout and looked neglected too.
Where to start?
Ok, staff were welcoming enough when we arrived and booked in.
But golf is usually all about the course.
This one is wet, very heavy and sodden on every hole.
At times we couldn’t determine the fairway from the rough as the grass was so long.
Clearly everyone ignores the requests to repair pitch marks.
Greens were badly pitted and uneven making that part of the game a bit of a lottery as well.
Came off covered in mud, and our Achilles were painful from walking in the Somme -like fairways.
Spend any longer on here and your likely to get trenchfoot.
Which is all a real shame.
This is a nicely designed course with a some cracking holes and would present a real test to some.
But it doesn’t get a chance
