Waste of time and money
Save your money, DO NOT PLAY THIS COURSE.
The setup and management of this course have been given up on, yet for two people with a bottle of lucozade it's over £100.
We arrived at 7:30 for an 8am tee time and everything was closed up, the pro shop didn’t open until 7:45 and we got out a little before 8.
The course is in terrible condition and when we got half way round in near 30 degree heat the pro shop was again closed as the only worker there was collecting balls on the driving range. There were three groups waiting to book in and it was only then that they informed us the course was closing in September and as such was being “wound down”.
This was the first we were made aware of this and if we had known we would have gone and played somewhere else.
We continued with the round and when finished went into the shop where the worker told us the bar was closed and the staff had been cut right back which was evident.
The pro shop is barely manned, the course is terrible and when I sent in an email of complaint I go the below response:
We are sorry that you were disappointed with the condition of the course and the level of facilities and service available during your visit.
The course has been in an improving situation following irrigation concerns (which were resolved some weeks ago now) and dry Spring weather we have been experiencing. We appreciate that this was not yet back to its former best and the course fees have not been increased this year accordingly.
There is no mention of the fact that they are shutting down for a complete overhaul!!
Don't, just please don't.
Wait until they redo the course
We arrived for an 8:00 AM tee time at 7:30 to which everything was shut up including the bar, shop and changing rooms. The lone employee turned up at 7:50 and apologised for the delays but he was on his own and had to do other jobs at the complex. We teed off and the course was in an awful condition with the tee boxes looking like a motocross track and the fairways not much better. We saw one groundsman on the whole ground.
We bumped into another group of golfers who told us that the management had given up on the course as they were closing it in September and redoing the whole thing. This was not made aware to us during the booking stage or when we checked in with the pro shop. The course was not nigh on unplayable and an absolute waste of time and money. To top it off the bar is closed now most of the time. Please save your money and go elsewhere. We have written a letter of complaint and they have not even had the decency to respond to us.
Expensive for what it is
The course was in pretty poor condition unfortunately, and it felt expensive for £35 at twilight.
Even if it had been in pristine condition, it’s not the most interesting course - particularly on the front 9,
Lovely course going to rot!
Admittedly, we have been "enjoying" a prolonged dry spell but that is no excuse for the state of the tees and greens.
Luton Hoo is a fantastic venue with an iconic building that has been featured in Bond movies and more, but the golf course is in a state of disrepair.
The lovely chap at golf reception apologised for the state of the first and 18th greens - but there was barely a decent one. Similarly, virtually all the tees were cracked from the heat and the geese were all over numerous greens depositing what geese deposit! :(
It seems such a pity as it is a lovely layout with several interesting holes incorporating the mature trees and lakes.
Disappointingly, the 19th hole closed at 3:30, and as we did not want to spend over £10 a pint in the mansion (admittedly in opulent surroundings) we drove to a nearby pub.
The green conditions were terrible, don’t bother
The green conditions were terrible, the pro shop said they had not been water and they are trying to repair them.
Since going I have now learnt the course is closing in September and now I know why the course was so poor. I wish I knew and I wouldn’t have bothered, even with the reduced price it’s still not worth going.
What a shame
Have played this course many times in the past and really enjoyed it.
However the course has had problems with the watering system which we were told was affect a few tee boxes and greens. In fact it was all tee boxes scorched and cracked and greens not good at all.
I will return again but not until next year as I can’t see the tees nor greens recovering this year.
Do not !!!
Fairways ok but green are unplayable. Would not spend £35 on a round. Honestly doesn’t look like this course has seen a green keeper in months.
Unfortunately, as explained when arriving at the course, due to lack of rain/watering the tee areas and greens were very poor.
Great course
Great course and great day with the weather. Only slight downfall was the greens, which were dry, as mentioned by staff, but in all very good and will be booking again soon.
There’s a reason it’s cheap currently
I’ve played Luton hoo a number of times before and have always enjoyed it, so when I saw it for £35 it seemed a great deal.
What they fail to tell you when booking is that all the tee boxes and greens are ruined. They did warn us when we arrived and the staff on site were great.
I would play again but not until they have sorted out these issues. Lively course just needs some time and effort spent in sorting the tees and greens. Worst greens I’ve seen in years
Greens and tee boxes need attention
Good course apart from the Sahara dry tee boxes and greens
A disappointing round
Having played this course several times in the past (last round was c.7 years ago), I booked Luton Hoo thinking we would get a great round - good greens, well looked after tees etc. The staff warned a member of my group about some irrigation issues, however the state of the course suggested this was a long term issue not a recent problem. The fairways & rough were ok - picking up off the fairway was tricky as was so dry. Rough was cut well, 1st and 2nd cuts obvious and tricky to play out of (a good challenge). The greens were like scorched earth - dusty, like concrete and crying out for TLC. Approach play was impossible. Putting was hit and hope. ‘Seen more moisture on the moon’ etc. The tees were equally dry, dusty, gripping shoes for driving the ball was harder than it should be. Helpful pro shop & bar staff - no fault there at all. Refreshing drinks after a hot day welcome. Would avoid until they resolve the playing conditions.
The worst course I have ever played
I’ve seen pitch and putts in better condition. The greens and tees were so poor, it was unplayable. This place needs to close and stop taking people’s money, if we were charged £10 for a round I would have felt ripped off.
Great course
Great course.. quite long but quite forgiven also. Proshop were great let me out early as I was in my own. Green fee was discounted due to green conditions but I thought they were fine.. recommend
Awful conditions
The course was in terrible condition. Greens were brown and tee boxes similar. The course is clearly not well maintained and definitely not up to the standard you'd expect. Greens were so dry and unkept they had holes in them and if you landed a shot on the green it wouldn't ever hold. Really really poor will not return.
