Bank Holiday Fun
Quirky course with some stunning holes especially the 16th, the walk up to the green with the beautiful Jacobean mansion as the backdrop must be one of the best holes in golf. Small greens make this a very demanding course as you need to come in high with some check. Overall a very enjoyable course in excellent condition.
Hallmark
I found the layout of the course fantastic with a great variety of holes with some wonderful views of the surrounding countryside. Tees and fairways were great but I felt the greens didn’t really look as good as I hoped. They didn’t play too badly though.
I felt the day was spoiled however with the pace of play. There were quite a lot of players out on the course which is fair enough but the round took 5 and a quarter to play. Not enough done to marshal play.
We were also disappointed that no food was available in the clubhouse..we were told if we wanted to eat we could go to the hotel.
Wouldn’t let it put me off coming back though... hopefully it was just a slow day.
Good course.... abit slow at times
Enjoyable days golf. Very hilly shame the weather didn't allow us to have a buggy. Sometimes waiting 5 minutes on the tee. Other than that a good round of golf. Will come back in the summer
Good Value
Got a £15 deal. Course in reasonable winter shape. Had to play off Winter Tees (which reduced the length of the course), but the tees were in a good condition and didn't take away any enjoyment.
The course offers a variety of holes and some good strategic bunkering. It's quite hilly and requires a reasonable level of fitness to walk.
Overall - For £15, I'd definitely play there again.
Golf
Played off temporary tees which you expect at this time of year.......liked the course and facilities. Would love to play it again when the weather improves and off the proper tees
Great value winter golf
Love this course and its layout. Good to see a starter in the winter to keep things moving. Really friendly staff and members. Four ball let us through immediately on the first tee and the pace was good for a weekend. Quite a bit of mud around tees and some sand on the greens but generally good and to be expected in January. High quality tee mats in play on most holes which is the right way to go in my opinion. Only negative was the halfway house shutting just before we got there. Would be nice to keep it open for all players but otherwise, really enjoyable as always.
Winter mats
The course was generally quite good but the use of winter mats wasn’t necessary.
Play was very slow as we followed people who were clearly not golfer which somewhat spoiled our day
Great Greens
With so much wet weather recently, combined with the cold December air, I wasn't expecting much.
Have to say I was really impressed with the greens, they were simply the best I played on all year.
The fairways and semi rough were well manicured, a real credit to the green-staff, it was impossible to lose a ball.
It has wide fairways with a few elevation changes and some beautiful scenery, water features and bags of character.
The offcourse facilities are plenty and varied with a great practise area.
I received a warm welcome and good conversation from the courteous staff.
Overall it is a classy place with a great and testing course.
If you havn't tried it you are missing out.
Great course
Love playing this course, good shots are rewarded and poor shots are punished. All 18 holes are different and good visually.
Why so quiet
Great course as usual. Reasonable test very pretty. Yes greens had recently been sanded etc but pretty standard for this time of year. Can never understand why it is always so quiet. Great value for money.
5 1/2 hour round. Terrible greens
Living locally and having played here many times, this should be one of the best courses in the Midlands ! Unfortunately the condition of the greens is way below what you would expect or accept if you were a member here. And to top it off 5 1/2 hours for a round !!! The starter was very keen to tell us about buggy abuse would be escorted from the course instantly, which was very condescending. Then teeing off 15 minutes later than booked which again is not the best start to a round. But to be held up for every shot due to the slow play was the worst of all. What are the course marshalls for ? Nowhere to be seen ! Greens and bunkers are the worst we’ve played all year ! It was so poor that I’ve cancelled my next booking.
Welcombe course review
Second time I have played this course, but last time was at least twenty years ago, so only sparse memories of the holes. as this would have helped with blind shots and dog leg holes, as this course has plenty of these. overall the course was in good nick, just the tees were a little scratchy and bare. I would say a good layout and challenge, enough space to not lose your ball other than the real bad shots.I enjoyed the test of golf, i would comment that if you walk it is hilly and has some good walks between holes.
Thank you very much for posting your excellent feedback.
What a gem !
Having played this course about 15 years ago I had modest expectations, what a surprise it seems that they have been very busy redesigning and improving the course and facilities. It s now an excellent test of golf with some challenging and difficult holes, considering how dry it is at the moment the greens were excellent and well watered and the fairways holding up really well.
We walked the course on a very hot day so I would strongly recommend using a buggy as it can be very hilly with fairly long walks between tees but overall a great experience and we will return for certain.
Fantastic to read that you enjoyed your visit, thank you.
Brutal
To say it was undulating is an understatement- take a buggy if your over 60
Great day at Stratford
New owners seem to be getting the course back to tip top condition. A way to go yet, but great value for a decent golf challenge in a very nice location.
Slow play
Very slow play, no one letting smaller groups through to allow play to flow.
Never saw a course marshal checking the flow of play.
Playing as a 2 ball took almost 5 1/2 hours to get round.
Great Greens for Winter
Beautiful surroundings and very friendly pro on arrival. We had a coffee in the clubhouse, again very friendly. On the course we were moving at our usual rate for the first 4 holes (16 & 24 H/cap) but then caught up with another 2 ball ahead. We soon realised that there were 2x 4Balls all on=Buggies in front. From there on in, we waited on every hole - sometimes standing aside even before they had tee'd off!! Obviously not club players!!!
Weather was good so did not let it detract from our overall experience. The course itself was packed with surprises and will be back next time in area.
The course provides a real rest of golf
We enjoyed our round of golf at the Welcombe.
The course is in good condition but slightly let down by the poor condition of the greens and tees.
The facilities are good and we enjoyed our lunch in the modern club house
I am very sorry that we did not look after you well and you raise some very concerning lapses in our service, I would like to look into this issue further so I can find the cause of the issue, I do hope that you will contact me directly at the Welcombe on 01789413800 and ask for Tom Waldron.
