A much better course in the summer....
Played here a few times, but not in winter conditions and it was very boggy. In a 4-ball we lost 3 balls between us on just 2 holes - they were plugged without trace although we had a good eye on their lines :-(
So won't be going back agin until spring and won't play in the winter unless they have significant drainage works done. Shame, because played in dry conditions its a good and challenging course.
Also, I know we just come out of lockdown into tier-2, but whilst we could buy a hot sausage roll, on a freezing cold day we couldn't buy a hot drink as the catering was completely shut. Not even a coffee machine. I think thats very poor for cusomers and must lose a lot of revenue for the club at a time they need it.
Mud bath
I wouldn't bother with this course at any time other than at the end of drought during a heatwave.
To be fair, all 4 par 3 holes are pretty nice I thought, bit of interest...and ironically play fairly. You can carry a nice short iron onto good greens.
All other holes involving the need for a fairway were basically unplayable after the recent amount of rain we've been having.
Scorecards should inc a course diagram to indicate the placing of the many hidden ditches that are rife throughout, as well as the hazard posts.
It's also an absolute slog walking from hole to hole...if you are silly enough to risk it then allow four hours to complete for a 2 ball...and that's with no holdups ahead of you.
Heaven help you if you get stuck behind a four-ball...Honestly doesn't bare thinking about.
Lesson well and truly learned.
Merrist wood.
Played this course many times. When it is in prime condition there's few better value for money. Intersting layout and very difficult at the turn. Will test golfers of all abilities off the white tees.

Fairways a bit patchy and all the tees were in a poor state but still enjoyed the round.
Unforgiving Rough
Have played this course previously when it was not so dry and had a better game. Rock hard fairways without a decent amount of playable first cut rough, meant balls ran and kept finding thick undergrowth far too easily and were lost even if they had just trickled into the edge. Tee-boxes varied but most were dry...should have packed a hammer to get my and had obviously been watered to a greater extent than the tee boxes. They were fast and bouncy, more favorable for chip-and-run than dropping onto hoping to stay on. Bunkers were not soft sand and quite solid / compressed. Nice course if you pick the right weather, but plays more frustrating in the extreme dry.
Good challenge.and interesting greens
The course was in good condition and with wide fairways and very dry weather the ball was running long distances. Greens are good with interesting slopes and overall the course offers some real challenges..
Staff were very fri3ndly and helpful and I had a lovely afternoon helped by the fact I played to my handicap.
Shame about the condition
I'm a big fan of this golf course. So many interesting holes it will take you a very long while to tire of it. Looks like the club is struggling though because the condition of the course wasn't that good so I was a little disappointed. Not in bad enough condition to not return (yet!) but they need to be careful. Once you lose the course I imagine it's a huge amount of money to bring it back and by then people are long gone
A cracking deal through Tee Off Times, £15 on a bank holiday instead of £35. The course is struggling, like most of them, with the late spring but isnt too far off getting to its best. There are some stunningly good par 4s where you need your best game. (Sadly my best isn't quite good enough but I still thoroughly enjoyed it.)
If you want a good challenge you really need to try it!
How sad
A great looking course which could be fabulous to play ( it was when I played before ) however yesterday it was the WORST course I have ever played, greens un-puttable, hit your ball on the fairway and it took 3 to find it due to the length of the grass and the grass cuttings, 10yds off the fairway your playing out of a ploughed field. Stay away

A long day on the golf course
The greens were bumpy. The fairway grass was too long and roughly cut. The rough was too rough. Play was very slow stuck behind a society. The two ball behind us gave up. 5 hour’s is too long. The chap in the pro shop was chatting to someone on the phone while myself and another waited to be served. The day ended when someone from the club staff closed the door to the patio area and suggested I walk around, fortunately He changed his view. The lady behind the bar when we arrived was good as was the quality of the bacon roll and coffee.
Course conditions very wet and water logged on the Fairways.
Greens were good for the conditions
Merrist Wood Guildford
Tempre Greens were sighted in middle of course for all 4 holes and were not mowed could not putt because the rough grass did not allow us to do this very very poor and I did go and see the General Manager who said he was sorry, we did not enjoy our game.
He did not offer another day for us to come back and really not interested overall.
The Greens on the other holes were very slow and not mowed and general fairways were poor.
Did not have Phots as I do not take I Phone on course while playing.
I had played on the course 3 weeks before and found the course is good condition but this time extremely disappointed and not planning to go back at this stage for the worst course I have played this year.
Good course. Nice layout. Interesting holes generally. Firm but fair!
Good value for money. Greens excellent. Good condition generally but fairways needed a cut. Nice to see the rough is a bit fairer these days!
Too long without a buggie
We needed a buggy really but it was senior captains day and they reserved all 11 buggies for them Which was a shame. Course is very long and there are no planners on each tee which I feel is always a help if you've never played it before. Still played it blind and shot +10 when normal is +6 so not too bad. Would only play again if buggy was available.
First Time at Merrist Wood
Booked an early tee time to avoid playing in the mid day heat. Both of us had not played for a while so wanted a basic course that favoured the wayward tee shot. Club assistant really friendly, got out early and course didn't disappoint. Holes well thought out and allowed for amateur mistakes. Enjoyed the day, well maintained fairways and very interesting greens. Excellent day well play again without question.
Great value
The course and the facilities were brilliant , friendly helpful staff definitely going back.
Good experience
Merristt Wood is a good test of golf with many exciting holes. We always enjoy our golf here and find the course a challenge.
We did find the course a little below par especially the greens, due to the lack of rain there's no growth so they were very slow and bumpy ! overall very enjoyable and a good experience, we will be back.
