Great course
Really enjoyable course not the easiest but you are rewarded when you hit a good shot
Nice course
Nice course some nice challenging holes especially with the wind
Normanby Hall
Disappointing.
Booked online at a very good cost only to be told on arrival that holes closed and not all greens open. Peculiar layout of the course to be able to play and greens didn’t roll true at all.
Hopefully this will improve as the course itself is good but will not try again until summer unfortunately.
Brilliant municipal
Have played here, many times and have always enjoyed it! There are some great holes here some very challenging ones too! Don’t be put off by the fact that it’s a municipal largely because it’s quite possibly the best council owned course I’ve ever played
Decent
It could be one of the best courses in the area with a bit of money and time spent on it tbh . Some fairways and couple of greens a bit ropey but still a decent course for the money . Bunkers need raking a bit but overall it is improving month by month and tbf its a pretty challenging course
Normanby hall
Course in poor condition, was in need of a lot of work, looked scruffy.
Bar was closed mid afternoon when we completed our round.
We will not return!
Okay for a cheap round
This course taken over by the council and it really shows. Fairways as long as the first cut rough and bunkers left to ruin, with weeds and grass growing through the sand. Tee boxes not maintained and course looking like a council course.
One plus was the greens were very good and clearly what they focus their attention on. £12 Hot Deal we paid and can’t really argue at that.
DO NOT PLAY THIS COURSE!!
The worst course I have ever played. Considering it’s been dry for a while, the course is in terrible condition! Greens have drainage holes in them and sanded so can’t putt properly. The fairways also haven’t been cut so every shot is from the rough or so bare, it’s hitting a shot off concrete. Value for money but can definitely see why as it is appalling. If you like golf, don’t play here
Needs some money spending on it to for new sign to show you to the next tee. Or a map of the course on the back of the score card. Would play it again
West is Not Best
A good test. Have played this course 3 times in successive weekends and yesterday I had an easterly wind - which is most helpful on the long holes on the slog uphill from the bottom of the course, and the headwind wasn’t too detrimental on the downhill holes. Knocked 15 shots off my first time score. Unfortunately the prevailing wind is a westerly.
With the hot dry weather of the last few weeks the ball was running for miles. I imagine the course will feel its length in the winter.
The layout is a bit unimaginative (more or less down, up, down, up) and it’s a shame there aren’t any water hazards, but a good mix of length of holes with at least 2 of the par 3s requiring pin point accuracy. 4 longish par 5s, 3 up, 1 down (hence easterly wind being favourable)
Signature holes - the 3rd, Devil’s Elbow, a sharp dog leg left requiring an iron or hybrid off the tee, if you negotiate that there’s a ditch to get over and another one on the right - and 12th - 3-4 shot par 5 as the fairway simply runs out necessitating an accurate pitch up to a raised green to the right. 18th is a nice finish.
Some bare patches on some of the greens but can’t go wrong for the twilight £10
Score 92 Handicap 20
Rough, everywhere.
What a letdown. I've played this course on a number of occasions but its never been in as poor condition as this last visit.
The fairways were like semi-rough, difficult to see where the fairway finished and the rough started. The greens were even worse, patchy, bumpy and covered in sand.
It will be a long time before I consider a return visit to Normanby.
Testing course, great value
Returned for my 4th round here and fully enjoyed it as always. I always leave feeling mentally exhausted, as its a battle between you and the course from 1-18. A lapse in concentration and its serious trouble! And I managed to bogey the 3rd hole Devils Elbow, which is my best yet on there!! Fully recommended for a testing round and facilities are great.
Course sett in great surroundings. Condition 90 percent but not unplayable after a few days of rain. A bit of a guessing game from flag to next tee the only thing for me. So I'd like to see that improved and possibly if a green is damaged use a temporary or move the flag.
Set in beautiful countryside
Although price for the round was very reasonable was upset that end of May and two of the greens were on winter ones and two other greens were in poor condition. One of them was very poor and on putting the ball bobbled all over on way to the hole. Other than poor greens the course was set in lovely countryside and fairways maintained to a good standard. Only other point was there was no clear markings to the next tee which was quite frustrating as sometimes was not sure where to go to the next tee. But for price I paid was not too bad. If i was paying more than that would of been upset with the condition of the greens and also nothing was marked up to say two of the greens were on winter ones.
Nice layout with interesting holes.
I played the course the day after it had rained solidly for 24 hours. You would not have known this though, so the course must be very free draining.
There are some very interesting holes in a well thought out layout with plenty of bunkers guarding fairways and greens. These bunkers were very compacted after the rain but a good raking would soon have sorted them out.
The greens, although they putted quite well, were badly damaged in parts with bare ground in places. Not good to look at.
All in all, a very pleasant setting and challenge, especially for the green fee charged. With more loving care it could be quite a gem but as a local council course it probably will not get it
What happened to the greens?
I have played this course a number of times over the last few years and it's been a while since I last played here and the greens are in awful condition! There even temp greens. The rest of the course is in good condition and the layout is great. It feels like it's been neglected and even the ball cleaners have no water in them. Such a shame as it has huge potential and have previously enjoyed the course.
