Tricky first time round
The Course layout is a little tricky first time round and the bowl hole definitely caught us out. Luckily we were helped out on a number of occasions by very friendly regular players.
Well maintained greens and fairways. Whilst lots of water some hidden only lost one ball so maybe not knowing where hazards were was an advantage.
Cheap tee off price at 2pm so very much a bargain at £19.
Will play again.
Problems
If you use a buggy have insurance documentation with you. You will not be allowed on the course without proof. Did not seem to understand the difference between buggy insurance and public liability insurance.
Course condition very good and most attractive. There is no on course information, no way markers and tees not numbered. Pity about the negatives because it is nice and is affordable.
Nature at its best
Graat quirky lay out with many challenging holes. However the course seens to have no water on the tees therefore really dry.
Most importantly the course is overun with Rabbits and there are rabbit scrapings and holes everywhere. You have to be careful with footwork.
Good course
Shortish do you don’t need to be a big hitter. Requires a bit of thinking off the tee playing for position rather than distance. A lot of water on most holes only thing that let it down was the tee boxes. Also no toilet or changing facilities.
It just needs
It needs, golfers to pick up their tees, and greensmen to keep it clean, more signs guiding you to the next tee, lots of tee boxes next rebuilding and levelling, fill all 2 hole cuts, but the course layout is great, but it short, even GolfNow price was to much, I’d never pay full price….
Just ok.
Course has some nice challenging holes. The front 9 was kind of a minefield of duck poop so I wouldn’t wear your very best shoes/gear if you intend on playing it. It was literally everywhere so even my trolley became a bit gross to look at.
Pace of play was awfully slow at parts so either book an early tee time or make sure you aren’t in a rush to go anywhere.
Some guess work towards the middle and end to figure out where to go for the the 9th and 18th holes as well so beware.
Great course, front 9 pretty challenging with an easy no driver back 9
Course is divided into 2
a long front 9 with lots lakes and water present.
Back 9 is short but testing depending on tee placements and flags but its all irons and tricky holes.
overall a great course for the money and VERY well maintained well done to the grounds staff.
lovely course
well kept for the time of year not busy yesterday. Good varirty of holes and challenges!
Nice course but poor condition
The course itself is a nice layout, but its condition is poor. Absolutely no drainage and the fairways were sodden and boggy. Greens still had the previous days holes not filled it, looks like the green keeper position has been vacant for a while which is a shame. Bunkers full of water and debris, dead trees with branches hanging in the way of the tee box causing obstructions from the tee. So so disappointing but I guess what do you expect from a public course. Just a shame it was not well kept to at least some form of acceptable standard.
One of the best.
Been to numerous courses over 25years and this is still one of my favourites, beautifully maintained and a fair test of parts of your game.
A good course in two halves
Pretty well maintained, quite a few par 3s but challenging nevertheless. the front 9 is long and dominated by water and dog legs. Geese are also to be found on fairway including goslings in spring. I find the back 9 a lot of fun and quite intimate. 12 and 15 a lot of fun. Fremdly staff both here and at larger Thorpe Wood. Juniors can play for £7. Pub next door is ok. Location good for the A1. For relaxing golfers who don’t take the sport too seriously I think this place is really good.
Small things could make a difference
Nice picturesque course. Lots of par 3s for target practice. Unfortunatley lots of people without handicaps are let loose on course. Therefore . Dont rake bunkers. Noisy shouting. Dont understabd rules eg lost ball search time.
Etc.
A short but demanding course
For a public course it is very well maintained . There is plenty of water to avoid. A great course for both the new and experienced golfer. Well worth a visit.
Excellent selection
Just returned playing here lately and really enjoy the surroundings. Pleasant lady welcomes you on arrival and it's just a great set up
This course is strange
Four par 3’s on the back nine kills the pace of play. Only one par 5 on the course. A total of 6 par 3’s just combines for a strange set up. No signs up for next tees. Greens were in good condition and rolled nicely. Just not my cup of tea.
150 yard markers
This is a great course to play.....two recommendations....the 150 yard markers need to be better as they can hardly be seen on any par 4/5 making it difficult when approaching the green.....also to aid it would be beneficial to correctly have a set system in pace for pin placement....Thorpe wood does this well, however orton Wells not so well.
Poor design, poorly looked after
Not more than 5 miles away from it’s sister course Thorpewood and yet a massive difference in it’s upmeeo and care of the greens and fairways.
Total waste of money
