Shocking greens
I wanted a practice 9 holes before an 18 hole late afternoon round. Whilst the 9 holes are pleasant in appearance the tee boxes, signage, practice facilities and off course amenities are very basic.
There was casual water on the course which after such a dry spell was unexpected (apparently it was built on a marsh). Worst is the greens which were the very slow, very bobbly and patchy.
For £6 my expectations weren't high and as an alternative target hitting exercise to the driving range it fit the bill. But if you come with the expectation of a well kept course I would look further afield. It doesn't pay justice to some good municipal courses such as my local Walton Hall.
Good course, just needs a little TLC
I love the course and its challenge, it's convenient and easy to park and staff are always friendly. The tees and greens need some TLC, but a nice course to get round in a couple of hours.
Fantastic value and well kept course
Had a brilliant round of golf there only 9 holes but can’t fault the course and it’s value for money, played behind and In front of members who were more than welcoming I will be visiting again
Awful condition
Played here a few times before and for the money couldn’t knock it (cheaper than a range)!
But oh how things have changed. The greens were an absolute joke, don’t even bother taking your
Putter as it’s not needed…. Please will Wigan council spend a few quid on this place and stop it being an
Embarrassment. The potential for a great little 9 holer is there
Pennington good for practice
Have played here a few times with friends but played this on my own for some practice. It’s good for some practice that you don’t get at the range and is cheaper. Not the most immaculately kept course and greens are tough to gage progress but excellent value for money. Was slow due to playing alone behind several 4 balls but is expected with any course. Perfect for a quick knock or tune up
£5 what do expect
The best way I can describe this course is that it is excellent value for money. Excellent for beginners as quiet and quite easy. But poor quality, occasional dog poo, litter and lots of walkers.
Fair practice course.
A honest review.... Think there are some harsh review of the course that are missing context. I will start and say the course is rough, however at £5 for 9 holes it's a bargain and much better suited to the high handicapper, a general practice or someone getting into golf. Not a high standard competition golf as I think some expect.
I played a Saturday 9.20 tee off time in June 21. Cool days with little rian over the last 3-4 days, so probably had the course in good stead.
The biggest let down were the tee off greens, so rough and in poor condition. The fairways generally where fair and I didn't have a poor lie all game, that said in heavy rain I can imagine it will get boggy in some spots, think playing with common sense to get free relief would. Putting greens could have been cut, super slow but not unplayable.
Markers on the course are poor, from tee box, signage, markers, hazards, gur (none).... Not un playable but needs the player to have some common sense.
As for public, yeah I can imagine it will get busy with lots of shots over public paths, I had it good the time I played but later afternoon might be more busy. That said holes 4 - 7 where basically private.
I'd support the course, have a play but might need to be sensible and adapt the game (make some local rules on hoof) around the course, so yeah not a comp course but a good learner/practice/friendly game course.
Needs work
Firstly, for the money ( £5 for 9 holes)
You can’t argue. It’s a great layout with some testing holes due to the streams and trees that encroach the fairways. The only grumble is the greens and fairways need a lot of work to get them into tip top shape.
When we played the pace was very slow due to a couple of groups of “1st timers” being in front of us
AVOID
This is without doubt THE WORST course I have ever played. Even at £5 per round. I wouldn’t play here again if someone paid me!
The fact it is labelled a golf course Is ridiculous. It’s fields with holes cut in the ground with flags in. Fairways are just like the rough and greens? Do they even exist here?! Grass longer than a standard fairway. Tee boxes?! Just piles of worm mud. Many of the holes have huge boggy patches in the centre of the fairways. Honestly I cannot wrote a review bad enough for this place!
Shocking course. Greens are longer than regulation fairways at a decent track. Tee Boxes non existent
Avoid, it’s a disgrace
I’ve played this course on and off for around 20 years and it hasn’t improved, always very boggy. Today’s play was especially bad! Fairways not cut. So balls don’t role, greens not maintained well. Bunkers are solid so unplayable. Played my last game there
Don’t bother
Probably the worse course I’ve ever played. Course was in terrible condition with one of the fairways like a swamp which smelled like manure. Save your money and don’t bother
No kids this time
Better to play here midweek as there is not much public about walking across the course. A few holes have very boggy fairways and is just not practical to play golf on
Very boggy
The course was VERY BOGGY and in desperate need of some drainage. Wouldn’t recommend this course unless it had been dry for weeks beforehand
Poor drainage, the greens are not maintained, the fairways are like the first cut. Red or Yellow tees are not easily identifiable. This would be a lovely 9 holes if it was maintained. Its in such a poor state that l feel it is the worst course l have ever played on.
Open to the public
This course is very open to the public on all holes. I passed numerous groups of teenagers during my round and the last hole was just pathetic. There were approx 30 teenagers on the fairway which made the hole unplayable and I had to pick my ball up to save grace. Did not expect this at all but I now understand why the price for play is low. The course condition was terrible too, big dirt patches in the middle of fairways and the greens were awful. As standards go this is the worst course I have ever played at and the only reason for that is the complete lack of maintenance and policing from the owners/council. If you just want to waste your time walking around this course then it’s for you, if not and you are taking it serious and aiming to improve, I wouldn’t even look at it, disgusting and disrespectful to the golfing world
Really poor
The fairways were like a bogs, greens were incredibly bumpy. There were hundreds of teenagers and families on the fairways making it impossible to play your shot safely.
