Lovely in summer, avoid in winter
Played this course a few times & really like it, but played it today & it really shouldn’t have been open. Temp tees & greens on every hole & standing water in many places. The temp greens were unusable, didn’t even bother getting my putter out.
Is a great course & very friendly staff & guests, but wish they’d just told us it was so boggy.
Shocking condition
Avoid at all cost they have let the course go massively such a shame
Great
Everything fine just the greens were not up to scratch really slow and very difficult to read needed maintenance but that was the only criticism
Mature parkland course with excellent greens
For a municipal golf course, this really is excellent. A well established parkland course with wide tree lined fairways and some interesting short holes. Although the fairways are a little patchy in places (not helped by the recent dry weather), the greens were in really excellent condition. The clubhouse is old fashioned but very friendly offering reasonably priced meals. Well worth a visit.
Great
Course was in great condition. Greens were superb. Rough was ok but as grass was just cut a lot of dead grass laying around, so no chance of finding ya ball if it went in there. But over all a course we play on a regular basis because it's a good all round course.
Poorly maintained
11th & 12th weren't cut in a while. Spent ages looking for my ball which landed on the fairway amongst the long grass and daisies. Would never play this when being charged the premium price.
Pay and play
Played this course many times it is in good condition now, greens are quite slow, the pace of play is much better than it used to be
It's very open
Probably not the best time of the year to review any course. No course looks and plays well during winter. Had previously played here about 3 years ago.
The course is parkland, with wide fairways and holes are parallel in some cases and always close together.
It is good course for high or intermediate handicap players as hitting your ball off line usually results in little real trouble. Often your ball lands on another fairway anyway!
I like the fact that hole 1 is a par 3 and relatively easy.
You don't want to start with a difficult hole and run up a stupid score.
The fairways are OK rather than good and the greens are very flat but were in good condition.
My only real issue would be if the course was busy then there is a possibility of being hit by stray shots as the holes are close together.
Overall I would suggest you play here once and then decide if it is a course you want to revisit.
Wasted potential
On arrival, the course looked pleasant enough, however the greens were so slow that even a child could putt on them. The fairways were so cloddy that it was hard to get an even contact on the ball without a muddy divot. Obviously, the green keeper lacks the experience/training required to work on a golf course.
The clubhouse is architecturally pleasant, built in 1935, however the original Crittal windows were very evident and the whole premises are very run down, obviously in need of a major upgrade. The toilets are particularly unpleasant and smelly.
Judging by the popularity of the venue, it is sad that this council run golf course isn't ploughing money back into this facility which has huge potential.
