Greens are in good condition but Airiation holes very large. Very busy due to the great weather conditions.
Nice course just too slow
This is a nice course with great shape to the greens. Unfortunately it suffers in the winter and spring as it doesn’t seem to drain well so a few fairways are very soft and wet in places. The pace of play was very slow on the day we played.
Shocking
Woeful condition, fairways boggg and long.. tee boxes and greens nothing short of disgraceful the free price paid.
Worse condition I’ve seen a course at this price point for a long time
Great layout. Shame about the greens
Course was really nice. Good layout and challenging enough. Some very nice holes.
Some greens weren’t great. Bare patches, very dry and some looked as though they had disease. Some bunkers were in poor condition also. Seemed like they were maybe short of staff but it’s genuinely worth a visit. Especially if the greens were in good condition.
Not impressed
On the day Sunday afternoon we played (2 ball) the course range was busy with what appeared to be a lesson preventing any warm up and on the course a very slow 3 ball in front took just over 2 hours for the front nine, one obviously not yet a competent golfer. He left after 9 and pace significantly improved. The course very boggy on many fairways no recent evidence of fairways being cut with large areas marked GUR. Very large bunkers on the course mostly shallow and none recently raked with hard sand. The greens large with plenty of slopes were heavily moss laden . The whole course was not looking well maintained BUT with the wet weather over winter and the very soft ground under foot conditions are not conducive for machinery to be used without causing a lot of damage. Evidence of a lot of “hedgehog” wheeled trollies, no sign of buggies. I doubt a return.
Some fairways and greens in awful condition
First time playing Telford and I will not be rushing back. This is also my first time leaving a review on here after hundreds of rounds of golf over the years; I’m that disappointed!
Grass cuttings all over the fairways, no attempt to collect after cutting. The green keepers are either using equipment that is too heavy for the course this time of year or they do not care, really deep tyre tread marks all over the place and close to the greens.
The drainage is simply not good enough at this place, really boggy in places considering how dry it has been in the last week.
Greens almost unplayable in places. I’ve played at other courses owned by Q Hotels (Hellidon Lakes) and hoped this would be an improvement but they clearly do not care about anything other than getting the footfall on to the course.
It is a shame as the location is great and some of the views and hole layouts are great. I know it is still March but I would not be in a rush to see if it has improved over the summer.
Terrible conditioned golf course and poor service
A day before my tee time I tried to call the pro shop. I left a voice message first time around and also tried to call a further 5 times over the space of the day but no one answered.
The welcome at the pro shop was friendly. After purchasing some range balls I headed to the driving range where you could hit off grass, however the quality of turf was non existent as it was overused therefore it was playing off dirt. The practice putting green was ok but this is on a incline that is not reflective of the putting greens out on the course so requires levelling out.
This was the worst conditioned golf course I have ever played. In spite of the heavy rain throughout the winter, it was extremely muddy all over and it is clear that this golf course suffers massively from drainage issues, if there is any drainage at all. Every single ball plugged in the fairway or rough and it was also difficult walking due to the mud and slippery conditions. When i played it was a sunny day and 10 degrees with a light breeze.
The fairways and rough had not been cut in a long time, this is understandable considering the recent rain and waterlogged conditions as machinery would otherwise get stuck. It may be wise for the club to invest in some lightweight robotic mowers that could work and cut despite the ground conditions in order to keep the conditioning to an acceptable level. Putting greens were ok but very soft. It was also noted that there was no ball washers out on the golf course which is vital when conditions were as soft as they were.
I only ended up playing 9 holes due to the condition of the golf course.
I had some food in the clubhouse that was on a par with the golf course in terms of service and quality. I ordered a ciabatta which took 45 minutes to be served, with no staff member coming over to me to apologise or manage my expectations. This was also on a quiet day where there were around 20 people maximum in the bar/lounge. I had to ask after 35 minutes where my food was - the staff member was very polite and checked straight away. He then offered me a free drink to apologise for the wait. The quality of the food was acceptable.
All in all, this was my worst experience of a venue with a very poor quality golf course that suffers in wet conditions due to poor drainage resulting in little maintenance done on the course, with poor service waiting for food. The only positive is that the staff were friendly.
Disappointed
Unfortunately due to the weather conditions and maintenance of the course...this should have been deemed unplayable.
I can imagine in the summer it would be a pleasurable golf course.
I wouldn't recommend at this moment in time but I would definitely go back in the summer season.
During Winter
Greens were incredibly slow and not cut
Fairways and rough were the same, very boggy with very long grass.
I recommend missing during the winter months.
Ploughed field
I don't normally make the time to write a review, but this time was different... I have played the course many many times and always found it very good, wet in the wi ter yes, unavoidable unfortunately, BUT!! The greens have been hollowtined when they were in no condition to do so and the fairways were reminiscent of a ploughed field.
Was getting folks out to play a priority or a cash grab the priority here.
Sadly the good people have opted not to reply to my email.
Avoid
Played here quite a few times over the years. Have generally avoided it during the winter - or when it’s wet as the course really doesn’t cope. However, played yesterday and the course was in horrendous shape. The tees were a mass of unrepaired divots, the fairways were extremely bare and just large patches of baked dirt in places. A lot of the greens were damaged and had been repaired with a lot of sand - and the bunkers seemed to have been ‘raked’ by driving some sort of buggy through them.
Needless to say, we won’t be going back in a hurry. Complete waste of £39.
