Los Lagos at Costa Mesa Golf & Country Club

Been playing here for years, it’s been a fine muni and with that I expect some degree of slow play on a weekend, but my last experience on the Lagos was inexcusably bad.

It was so backed up that they were 45 minutes behind from the start and the round itself took over 6 hours to complete. As we finished, another super twilight group was walking off the 8th tee saying it took them 3 hours to play 7 holes.

Again, this course is a fine muni, the condition, amenities, and course staff lived up to that expectation, however, management needs to do something about pace, whether it be having Marshalls enforce slow play, or simply spacing out tee times more than every 6-8 minutes.

Packing as many people onto a course comes across as a cash grab and it shows that whoever is in charge doesn’t care at all about the experience. I’ve played here for probably 20 years now, and I know they can be better than this.

This course was originally a favorite amongst many friends. Originally pace of play would be slow at times (~5-5:30hours a round but usually closer to 4:45).

However today was unreal. It was about 5 minute tee time spacing. Not sure if they are testing out new times but I would not recommend this to anyone. We teed off at 1:50 and we pulled up to Hole 4 at 3:10.

There were consistently 3 groups for every par 3 with another group on the green and 3 groups for every par 5 with another group having just teed off. We called it quits due to the sun setting at 7pm and we still had four holes left. Pace of play for full completion would have been 6hrs at the very least.

Very annoying to go check in for my tee time to then discover that the greens have been aerated. Continuing issue. Why can’t GolfNow get together with the courses and get this one piece of information correct?

Had a 1:51 tee time and couldn’t even finish all 18. Group of 5 directly in front of us that the pro shop apparently “allowed” because they knew people who worked at the golf course. Marshalls couldn’t enforce pace of play on them so my group barely finished 16 holes after 5.5 hours. I would avoid this place

So I know this course plays slow, it’s always a 4 hour and 30 minutes to even 5 hours for a round. My tee time was at 10am on a Tuesday. I had a 6 hour gap in my day and I live 10 minutes from the course so plenty of time, I thought. I wish I was exaggerating but standing on the 12th tee box, I walked off because it was 1:40pm, 3 hours and 40 minutes to play 11 holes. This was on pace for a 6 hour round. The pricing is very fair for the condition and layout of the course. Both sides are fun and interesting layouts for the money spent but 5+ hours for a round of golf is too long. If you haven’t looked around lately, I’d look to other local courses in OC.

Every tee box was backed up two groups at least. They stack tee times to tight here. It’s a shame, fun course good price but the rate of play is unacceptable. 5 1/2 hours for 15 holes

What a shame! The worst experience in my golf life of 20 years all over the world! Two guys of the threesome group behind us destroyed our round hitting over us with bad intention ignoring our reminding. It’s too dangerous, we had to leave, it’s not worth the life for a golf round. We complained after telling the story to the staff in the golf shop. It seemed like a bad dream! What a shame for the two rude and ruthless guys.

we had a tee time at 1:06pm on Tuesday Sep. 19, mesa linda, the group before us are beginners and very slow, we had to wait a long time every hole. we had 2 girls player behind us, but came out 3 guys from the first T, 2 guys riding were impatient and rude,but we couldn't go anywhere! The hole 14 par 5, one of the riding guys long hitter tee off even over and almost hit us while we were waiting the group before us, the worth this was that he hit on the next tee box while we were waiting there, we told him he should yell something, it's too risky, he just ignored us and hit on the tee box, and the other guy argued with us saying they didn't want wait to hit. the worst things continued, the 2 guys hit over us in the next hole short par 4 while we were approaching the green even though we yelled no! so, we had to quite and leave, it's too dangerous! the worst experience in all my more than 20 years golfing life all over the world! what a shame! could be more rude?! never go back there!

Pros: great price with golf now special, conditions great, greens perfect and ran well, flag/hole placement challenging, long and wide course, long par 3s, cart girl came around multiple times. I thought even though course was wide open (not really losing balls on OB shots), the rough was thick so it made it fair. Greens very challenging in my opinion with slopes and hole placement so when you got away with a par and 1 putt you felt you really deserved it. Would play again if I could get an early am tee time on weekday and knew I had 5 hours to spend. Stiiiizy down the road so load up prior to playing.

Cons: very slow as mentioned by others with the group in front of us putting like they are on tour but really just older folks who don’t know etiquette. I feel a lot of the golfers don’t know etiquette here and maybe reflective of low prices paid. Marshall came around hole 15 and said he told the group in front of us to speed up. Could have used him about 4 hours prior. Saw someone towards the end with a broken down cart and they said they were waiting 20 minutes and still nobody to help. Also breakfast burrito to go didn’t come wrapped and fell apart after 2 bites.
