Mesa Linda at Costa Mesa Golf & Country Club

Was my home course. Then when I double booked one day because I didn't see the email confirmation and times go quick. I booked another. Then a month after my round they straight deducted 256 from my account. I always would call and cancel if needed. Then when I tried to talk to them about it. I got the run around between golf now their online services and there golf shop. Very upset that I carry my handicap with them and was my home course. Haven't played there since. Won't go back till solve the problem. Was very disappointed to call them a home course after the issue.

First, thanks to the pro shop for getting me into an earlier slot than my original 2PM time. I chose to walk because I read previous reviews about pace of play. I don't know why anyone would bother paying for a cart when walking is just as effective. Course management is booking way too many tee times. It took nearly 3 hours to finish the first 9 on Mesa Linda. I quit after 14.

5 1/2 hour round, greens were punched but had no idea till the first green. I really do love both courses here but the pace is just to slow. Marshall wasn’t doing anything to help. Really should consider more adamant spacing for tee times instead of focusing solely on the dollar. Really is a shame

The group in front of us was taking 20 min per hole AnD no help from the Marshall if there was one. The group in front of us didn't understand playthings and by the time they got to the turn the two holes in front of them were empty. Good course otherwise. Here's a shout out to the cool guys in the pro shop who endured a horrible rant by the starter wearing a red jacket who pulled his cart up the window and for 5-6 long minutes gave an obscenity laced shout out through the proshop window with F bombs and more, in ear shot of 30 people. He even came back for a 2nd beat down 15 min later. Totally inexcusable, and really showed bad for a pretty well organized operation minus NOT having a Marshall fix slow play in front of. My group ran out of time and patience and left after 8 holes and wasted a lot of money, and time. We couldn't endure 10 more holes of getting ice cold between swings.

Title says it all. 3.5 hours to play 9 holes. Course was in good enough condition, what you would expect from a muni. If you have 6.5 to 7 hours to play a round of golf then it could be an enjoyable course. Was hoping this day was a one off but from talking to other players this is the norm and they didn’t seem to find it that appalling.

Costa Mesa Los Lagos has always been a fun muni. Course is in pretty good shape. Los Lagos is longer and more challenging than its partner course, Mesa Linda.

6:42 tee time this morning and had a relatively quick 4 hour round. We lost touch with the group in front of us (I believe they were the first group of the day), and I don’t doubt they finished their round in close to 3.5 hours. For context, my buddy played Los Lagos 2 days ago with a tee time just after 12pm, and his round took 6 hours. So my group today made really good time.

All that being said, the marshal talked to us in the fairway of the par 5 14th to let us know the group ahead of us was already on the 17th tee. I said, “Ok. We’ll get going.” At that point we had played 13 holes in about 3 hours. But I understand the marshal wants us to keep pace of play moving, and yes, we were 2 holes behind the group in front of us.

What happened next is the one negative part of my review and left a bitter taste in my mouth. The marshal proceeded to park his cart just off the par 3 15th hole and watched us play the entire hole. I’ve been playing golf for over 30 years and the only times I’ve seen a marshal go out of his way to watch a group is if a) they are super slow and hindering pace of play or b) they are causing a commotion on course through their actions (drinking, unsafe play, etc.). You warned us already, man. Let us pick up the pace, and you can go about your day. No need to park in full sight of us and micro manage our pace of play as if you need to make an example of our group.

We played the par 3 15th in 7 minutes. From first tee shot to walking off the green. And we honestly didn’t change our pace that much.

I went to the pro shop afterwards to ask what the expectation of pace of play was, and they said 4 hours is fine but you should keep up with the group ahead of you. I don’t know of many groups that can finish a round in sub-4 hours.

I’m sure I’ll be back, but the marshals need to chill.

TL;DR- The marshal made us feel as if we were out of line for not playing a sub-4 hour pace.

Tee time was at 1:33 but got pushed back to around 1:45 due to early morning fog delay. Fine. Around 2 hours to finish maybe 3 holes?! Got to the first par 3 (hole 4?) and there were 4 groups in front of ours waiting to hit. Group behind called the pro shop to see if we could get a rain check but they said no and that they would send a Marshall. No marshall ever came, doubt they even checked pace. First 9 was a 3.5hrs. Finished 15 holes by sundown.

I get that there was a fog delay, especially bad that morning, and there’s not much you can do about it but dang, no rain checks? No Marshall?

Pace of play was terrible. Had 4 groups waiting on every tee box. Got 11 holes in 4 1/2 hours

The pace of play was the worst I’ve ever been a part of…3.5 hour round and I only got through 7 holes.

Something needs to happen to improve this. Great course, solid greens but horrible pace

Been playing here for years, it’s been a fine muni and with that I expect some degree of slow play on a weekend, but my last experience on the Lagos was inexcusably bad.

It was so backed up that they were 45 minutes behind from the start and the round itself took over 6 hours to complete. As we finished, another super twilight group was walking off the 8th tee saying it took them 3 hours to play 7 holes.

Again, this course is a fine muni, the condition, amenities, and course staff lived up to that expectation, however, management needs to do something about pace, whether it be having Marshalls enforce slow play, or simply spacing out tee times more than every 6-8 minutes.

Packing as many people onto a course comes across as a cash grab and it shows that whoever is in charge doesn’t care at all about the experience. I’ve played here for probably 20 years now, and I know they can be better than this.

This course was originally a favorite amongst many friends. Originally pace of play would be slow at times (~5-5:30hours a round but usually closer to 4:45).

However today was unreal. It was about 5 minute tee time spacing. Not sure if they are testing out new times but I would not recommend this to anyone. We teed off at 1:50 and we pulled up to Hole 4 at 3:10.

There were consistently 3 groups for every par 3 with another group on the green and 3 groups for every par 5 with another group having just teed off. We called it quits due to the sun setting at 7pm and we still had four holes left. Pace of play for full completion would have been 6hrs at the very least.

Very annoying to go check in for my tee time to then discover that the greens have been aerated. Continuing issue. Why can’t GolfNow get together with the courses and get this one piece of information correct?

Had a 1:51 tee time and couldn’t even finish all 18. Group of 5 directly in front of us that the pro shop apparently “allowed” because they knew people who worked at the golf course. Marshalls couldn’t enforce pace of play on them so my group barely finished 16 holes after 5.5 hours. I would avoid this place

So I know this course plays slow, it’s always a 4 hour and 30 minutes to even 5 hours for a round. My tee time was at 10am on a Tuesday. I had a 6 hour gap in my day and I live 10 minutes from the course so plenty of time, I thought. I wish I was exaggerating but standing on the 12th tee box, I walked off because it was 1:40pm, 3 hours and 40 minutes to play 11 holes. This was on pace for a 6 hour round. The pricing is very fair for the condition and layout of the course. Both sides are fun and interesting layouts for the money spent but 5+ hours for a round of golf is too long. If you haven’t looked around lately, I’d look to other local courses in OC.
