Excellent course for the money
Fun and challenging layout. Greens are in great shape. Friendly staff and pace of play was steady for a Sunday afternoon round. Shot 79 from the Blue tees. Great day!
An slightly better than average course - overpriced
I like to walk courses with my push cart, but not available at this course on Fri-Sun. It's hilly so I can see why they discourage it. Course conditions are okay for the spring. Firm 7ish stimp greens, plenty of sand in bunkers. Might consider laying down fresh sod in certain spots but not bad, fairways have some green even though most of rough dormant. Sunday late morning tee time was a 5 hour round in a golf cart - waiting every hole. Probably due to narrow layout and tee times every 10 min.
First time back after the pandemic
After taking time off during the pandemic from playing golf I was truly sorry to see the condition of the
course. It was in such poor condition that cart path only was allowed. This was being done to try and save the remaining grass on the fairways.
Cart Path only with perfect weather
We had to play cart path only and it was not easy for us to walk to the ball every shot especially when the weather was fine. The course had a rule that it was cart path only until March 31st and if we were informed as to the cart path only rule, we would not have played this course. The course is very hilly and was very rough on our legs with severe arthritis for both players.
Not Worth The Money
I've played at St. Marlo's numerous times over the last three years and the course just continues to be in worse shape every time I play.
It was cart path only, as it had rained 2 days before I played, so that was understandable. What I don't understand is how the course just does not drain. The entire front 9 was a mud pit. I was constantly having to move my ball out of areas where it was too muddy to even attempt to play. On top of that, there are multiple tee boxes where there is no grass. I understand that there are times when the course has to undergo maintenance, but the blue tee box on #5 has been without grass for 2 years now. That's unacceptable. If you can't grow grass there, move the tee box.
The marshalls were also very aggressive about speeding up pace of play, but it was cart path only and we were right behind the group in front of us all day.
There are much better courses in the area that you can play for the same price or cheaper. I will not be back to St. Marlo any time soon as I'm tired of paying such a high price for a course that's in terrible condition. It's a shame that this used to be my favorite course to play and now I have no interest in coming back.
Not worth the money
St. Marlo seems to be in worse shape every time I play it. It rained two days ago and the entire front 9 was just a big mud pit. I’ve played here regularly for 2 years and each time I wonder why I’m paying $80 for this course.
3 or 4 tee boxes have no grass in them, greens have bald patches, and the course seems to collect water all over the place. Two years ago, I would have said this was the best course I played regularly. Now I’m thinking I won’t be back.
Cartpaths
Despite it not raining in over 6 days it was cart path only. That made for a long day. Will not play here again unless it's not cart path only.
Use to be a great course
Many years back this course was simply awesome - great layout, great condition, great pace of play, great people. Now still great layout and great people but awful pace of play, and even worse course condition and this is not a one time experience. This has been the case the last three times I played here. Rain, no rain, does not matter, course is in always bad shape, no different than overused Muni course. Course is always packed, fourseome, after foursome, after foursome and everyone thinks they are a pro, throwing grass up in the air to gauge wind, completing two foot putts, no empathy for people behind you and keeping up pace of play.
I left after hole 10 today and will not be back for a long time, until I forget the last three experiences.
Marshall and the starter were awesome!
8 hour round
Saturday morning tee time... 8:40 they let walkers out, couple groups in front of us. At 1 pm on the 12 hole we bailed out. It was a joke there was a 6some behind us that was actually meeting us on tee box every other hole. Waste of money, carts are pieces of junk... so soggy. I'm not a whiner but could not let this go. 6-7 hour round of golf is insane.
Overall disappointing experience
If you charge almost $90 in February, you’d hope the course would be in decent shape. The greens had many cracks and dry spots on them. Sand as well. Many signs of poor grass management. Carts were in poor condition. Warn tires and while the breaks worked, the break pedal wouldn’t lock and I would have to stop the cart on flat ground. A majority of holes were enjoyable and nice course layout, while hole nine you have to hit over a massive rock, it’s bizarre.
Only fair experience
Review: Carts have bald tires, and horrible shocks. They need to be replaced. Carts border on being dangerous. Cart paths are brutal with craters the size of a Toyota. Rock paths need repair. Aside from the fact that it is a beautiful course, they have ignored many maintenance needs. A positive, the greens were better than average which was the bright spot of the day. They are very proud of their prices (about 100 bucks) but the fee didn't match the facility. Too bad.
I would not recommend to a friend. The site would not allow mw to choose no.
Course
Greens are in great condition. Rolling true and fast. Bunkers are full and fluffy. Very pleased with course conditions. Only complaint were a group of three players that played like old people very slow holding up 2 groups. If they can get these people to speed up everyone’ would enjoy better.
