The Pebble Beach of Wales?

All I knew about Nefyn was that it promised views of the sea from every tee. Boy, did it ever.

On an absolutely perfect day for golf – 70 degrees, sun, light wind – we were blown away by the views on this course, which reminds me a lot of Pebble Beach (and one of my colleagues said it recalled Ireland’s Old Head).

The 27-hole facility isn’t overly challenging. We started on the front side, which was highlighted by the par-4 second and par-3 fifth, which offer dramatic views. But if you’re making the trip and playing the course for the first time, make sure you play the nine-hole “Old” course, which is much more quirky and fun. The first hole on that side requires a completely blind second shot over a dune, and the fourth hole is a long, sharp dogleg left.

Some of these holes definitely are weird. The fifth is a 140-yard par 3 that is positioned next to the National Coastwatch tower, and you have to hit your tee shot off a mat to a green that offered nowhere to miss – left and long was gorse, right was the car park. The par-5 eighth was also a bizarre design, as it basically took driver out of your hands and rewarded a tee shot that went 200 yards.

Only the brave should play this side. At the uphill, drivable ninth, cars and people are JUST off the left side of the fairway. It's a nervy tee shot, for sure, though I somehow rifled a cut over a middle-aged man’s head and had 15 feet for eagle.

If you’re in the area, this is a must-play -- if only for the spectacular views.

A Tough Test of Golf

Walking around this beautifully maintained golf course in the past has been a pleasure, especially on a warm summers day. Although it was warm and sunny, the wind was blowing a hoolie and made a tricky situation under calm conditions even harder. Into the wind drives could make 190 yards and with a following wind up to 300 Yards. Greens are rock hard and lightening fast, very very challenging but enjoyable challenging experience. Recommended to any golfer, however it favours straight hitters

Nefyn Golf Course

Always been on my list of courses to play purely based on photos I have seen. Friendly staff in the Pro shop & clubhouse. Great food. The course was in glorious condition & the views were outstanding.

I had been warned beforehand by friends that the last 9 holes on the Old Course due to the public footpath/road running through can be busy with walkers/sightseers. The last 4 holes were somewhat ruined for me because that's where you are in most contact with the public. You have to assume that they are unaware of the dangers of a golf ball & have to wait to play several shots. Saying that we did play during the school holidays.

On the whole one of the most picturesque golf courses I have ever played and would play the New Course back 9 next time.

needs to be done

Played Nefyn on a glorious friday in October, early tee 9am, no wind, the opening five holes just superb, 6 - 9 come away from coastal path but nice holes, then from 10 onwards the fun starts daring carries, blind shots, 3 par 3's, 17 must be one of the toughest holes anywhere, almost unfair ! 18 is a good chance to finish with a birdie though, glad we teed off early as the amount of general public just milling about was growing all the time we were on the course, I cant believe it would be much fun playing pm in the peak of the summer, there must be people everywhere, It is a must play because it is fairly unique, course was in great nick, we would definately return and recommend to friends, good fun, must be incredibly difficult on a very windy day, no, maybe just stay in bed !!

Money comes first

It was a birthday treat drove from Birmingham 4 hours but the course views were fantastic, Practice area was great putting green Chipping green and a small driving range. It was blowing a 15 -20 wind off the sea so we knew this was going to be a fun round ignore the score.

I tried to book a tee off time of 13:28 which was available on their own website. This was changed to 15:28 as the put a society from north wales out in-front of us. We had to walk off the course at 20:00 as it was to dark to see the ball. After 16 holes. Nice stitch up Nefyn. I would go back as the views however he course wasn't in good condition for the money, poor greens sand all over them after not enough top soil following Autumn treatment. We took excessive amount of photos whilst waiting on every shot. Also there was a course alteration which mean a couple of make shift holes par 3 9th then a long walk to the 10 tee infront of the club house, then waited over half an hour to tee off.

Top notch

I don't need to tell golf enthusiasts what a special place this is, they probably already know. The course was in superb condition as you'd expect and the setting is remarkable. We played in pretty windy conditions and the back 9 (old course) was tough but fun with spectacular raised tee boxes over cliff edge landscape. Like others have said, the public footpaths lined with ramblers is a bit nerve wracking for mid handicappers with a wild miss or 2 in them but that's the case for many picturesque coastal courses.

A truly unique course

From the start, you work your way out to sea and play along the cliff tops on what is predominantly heathland terrain. The tee of the par 3, 5th at the furthest extremity of the course is quite literally perched on top of the rocks with the Irish Sea crashing in to the coves beneath.

The back 8 of the old course is where this course has made its name where a collection of holes have somehow been carefully tailored to fit on their own peninsula. The 13th is the pick of the bunch, a 435 yard par 4 dogleg with a drive that carries over the sea. It is tempting to bite off a large chunk to leave yourself with an easy approach, but with the inevitable sea breeze it is a difficult shot to judge. If you get a chance pop down the coastal path to the Ty Coch Inn, not quite the halfway house, but it you need a bit of Dutch courage before you tackle the tip of the peninsula, this is the place to find it.
