Located in Oceanside, Goat Hill Park originally opened in 1952 as a nine-hole course called Center City Golf Course. It was the first golf course in San Diego County and in the 1980s was designated as protected public land that cannot be developed without a public vote. The course was redesigned in the 1990s into an 18-hole short course and soon became known by locals as "Goat Hill." The course was threatened by development in 2014 but the local community fought the plans at city hall and a new management team led by local residents John Ashworth, David Emerick and Geoff Cunningham assumed management of the golf course. Using volunteer corps of tradesman and citizens along with dedicated staff, they renovated and revitalized Goat Hill to its current state. The course features one par 5 on its par-65 layout and features long views from its perch on a hill. It also has a full driving range, pro shop as well as disc golf interwoven into the layout.

Challenging Par 3's. Staff is aloof

Some good challenging par 3's and narrow par 4's that make you leave your driver in the bag. When I arrived to check in, the guy working there barely acknowledged me, kept his head down basically the whole time. Gave me a key and said here you go. That was it! Not really too engaged or friendly.. I was thinking about buying a shirt after the round and some young kid was barely interested in helping me. There was no "hi how are you?" kind of thing going on at this place. Almost like customer barely exists. That was my experience with the staff anyways.

Golf as it was meant to be played

An excellent, straightforward layout. Everything is right in front of you and there is no pretence Pace of play is excellent, no nonsense.

The good, the bad, the ugly

Good: Super chill course, dog friendly, great practice area, ocean views, affordable prices. Surprisingly challenging with all the hills.

Bad: Most cart paths are dirt, shared flags with cramped space, confusing hole arrangements.

Ugly: Course is shared with disc golf. It’s outdated, only 1 par 5. Total par is 65, should be advertised as an executive course. No grill = no food.

Very overpriced

Can’t believe this place is charging over $60 for a round. Such a bummer!

Fun round

The Goat is always a fun and challenging course. Had a blast and excited to see the work they are putting in. Hoping they will get to the tee boxes soon, and get them as nice as the greens. On some holes it was too hard to even get a tee into. Had to stab around a bit until you found a semi soft patch.

Pace of play was great, and the weather was gorgeous. Looking forward to coming back again

Disheartening

I’ve played the Goat for years. It’s always under some form of construction, which has its drawbacks. The rates to play are now $60 with a cart for 18. I feel this quite expensive for what you get. It used to be an inexpensive alternative to other courses in the area, but this is no longer the case. Sad to see the rates climb so disproportionately to the value you get.
